vDR 2.0 and FLR

I noticed that there was no FLR component for the new 2.0 vDR.  Older versions of FLR will work with VDR 2.0?

There are two directories in the ISO Image:

'WinFLR' and 'LinuxFLR' with a new release V2.0.0.50.

I don't know where to start with vDR, but I have worked with 1.1 and out the door I thought it worked pretty well. But then I started to notice a number of jobs that failed. I was also noticed that giving the device as much as 4 vCPUs, he would go for a considerable time for use at 100%. I moved to version 1.2 and created a new windows share to store backups. Every night a few backups have errors and the destination will be blocked until about a third of my restore points are marked for deletion and an integrity check is run.

My hosts are ESX4 U1 with and all my guests are v7 and 2003, 32, and 64 with SP2.

Are other experiences with vDR 1.x to pretty much the same as mine? I feel a sense of boredom confident in it like a backup strategy with the amount of attention that I'll have to give it. I don't really know where to begin troubleshooting, even if I was in the technical document 1.2.

I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

  • vDR (1.1) and backup on a network share

    Hello

I want to install vDR backup on a network share, but wanted to understand the best practices for the network share and if it's OK for her, which will be presented on the virtual Center Server.

Also, if I wanted to copy this network share broadband (for storage on the site off the coast) is this OK. Anything to be aware off the coast?

I read a previous post and she suggested that I need to power of the vDR device, to ensure that the store of deduplication is not in use (no integrity checks / ongoing backups). Is this the case?

    Thank you very much

If I save the Windows share on tape, outside the backup of vDR

window still would be that I have to turn off power VDR or disassemble the

    Share?

Yes, because other non-backup operations can still function.  This can cause issues of contention between VDR data and the application copies the data from the store of deduplication.

Or, I was controlling access to the share (via command line /)

changes of the authorization) to allow access during the backup window, then once

the backup window is closed I remove permissions for vDR can not

    more access the share?

Interesting idea - I had never thought about this.  Theoretically, it should work, but we have never tried on in-house.

If I have limited access to the share on time would be the vDR go up automatically?

I don't think so, you will have to do it manually.

  • What card v2 VDR uses to move the data?

    Hi all

We use VDR version 2 and I was wondering that NIC should be used to extract data from the snapshot? My guess is all what stays on the NIC for iSCSI traffic since he shoots the VMDK file info and the camera VDR has a direct access to the vmfs iSCSI volumes that it's back up.

    Thank you

If the ESX where resides the VDR unit have access to the current virtual machine to backup, it's using the iSCSI network (if your SAN iSCSI). If this is not the case, the ESX management network is used.

  • VDR: Size of backup destination

    Hi all

It's maybe a stupid question, but I have to ask. I have test VDR 1.2 and have configured a share as a destination and currently save a few machines with a total of about 450 GB allocated disk. Most of the machines is very similar, c-disk of 20 GB and 2008 R2, but the virtual machine also has a d-300 GB disk that is about half full (with vhd files). If I understand correctly, the first backup is full, then the rest is incremental. I expect the backup destination to about the same size as the actual data used, at least 150-170 GB since that's the size of the unique data for the virtual machine, I backup with VDR, but the size of the backup destination is only 29 GB. I totally hard works of VDR? No explanation will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    GB

    Hello

have a different opinion. Data deduplication on all incoming data recovery. Get rid of full/incremental view.

When you first save a virtual machine all the data of this virtual machine will be read and recorded deduplicated. Second time datarecovery uses the followed the change block. Your vm writes a file (... ctk.vmdk), where he follows the changed blocks. Data recovery simply saves only the blocks changed since the last backup. You can call it incremental if you want, but from the point of view of the transfer data, these are all full backups. There is no dependency between backups.

If save you a virtual machine with 150 GB and your destination of data recovery shows that 29 GB used - it is possible. It depends on what kind of data your saved vm a. imagine an Oracle database that uses several files that have a size of 10 GB left. If only 1 GB inside this file is used 9 are empty. Who will very well be deduped...

Maybe inside your virtual machine vhd files are for the most part empty? Or has information that can greatly be deduped?

  • Restore kept VDR retention policy points

    Hello

I am running vDR 1.2 and that you have configured a single backup with a custom retention policy task.  The 'number of backups to keep' is set to 2.  For "older backups to keep", all configurable parameters are zero.  Yet, all restore points are kept in my Restore tab (currently 5 or more points of restoration by VM).  I'm doing something wrong, or I misunderstood how to use retention policy?

    Hello

Your retention policy is identical to ours and I was intrigued by the same thing. However, if you look at the attached screenshot, my understanding is that he will keep a minimum of 2 backups and delete only the older as needed to make room for a new backup.

    Hello

I just changed our self-signed certificates GCO, replaced by certificates of our internal CA.

I followed VMware KB: configuration of CA signed certificates for vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 exactly.

Our CA server runs CentOS 6.5, which comes with OpenSSL 0.9.8 >, which means that the keys are stored in a new key format (PKCS #8 vs 'traditional' format.)

I turned my back to the old format vCenter keys using 'openssl rsa - in server.key - out server.rsa.key", who was actually mentioned in a VMware KB, too."

Just to summarize: I created four certificates 2048 bit using SHA512, with IP, domain name FULL and the hostname as SAN and different such s organizationalUnitNamementioned in the above KB.

Keys have been created in format PKCS #8 which seems to be the norm for OpenSSL > 0.9.8n.

Well, everything seems to work fine until I tried to connect to my POS via vSphere Web Client. I received the message that the SSO service could not be reached and asked if I wanted to be redirected to the Pdvs management page.

I took a look in /usr/local/avamar/var/vdr/server_logs/vdr-server.log and found this:

Well, I can't make backups now. Cancellation of certificate is possible would be a short-term solution.

Although VMware says it is advisable to use 2048 bits for server certificates, nothing is said about the CA certificates. VMware vCenter Unit 5.5 works fine with server of 2048 and 8192-bit certificates CA Cert. On the other hand, POS dislikes CERT of 8192 bits.

As we were trying to allow a new CA and test first with our VMware environment, we could create a new with 4096 bits.

VMware and ceritificates seem to be a complicated, depressing and never-ending story.

  • Consistency of backup in vmware data recovery

    Hi all

We deploy a vDR to ensure the backup disk 2 for a client infrastructure aprox 70VMs and VSphere 5, all with enough license to use vDR. This environment has many Lotus Domino and SQL Server, which are critical servers.

Does anyone has tested vDR for SQL and Lotus Domino servers? What backup consistency? Is enough VSS to ensure consistency in both environments, or simply for Ms SQL (like Lotus not Ms App)...

I would be very happy if someone could paste on the real tests.

    Thanks in advance.

    Julio Rosua

    Hello.

Is enough VSS to ensure consistency in both environments, or simply for Ms SQL (like Lotus not Ms App)...

VSS is enough with some combinations of SQL and Windows - read here for more information.  Domino will be crash consistent.  Crash consistent backups Domino are generally good, but if you 100% must depend on her, then, it would be better to get an agent installed for Domino.

    Good luck!

  • Guest operating system is hard duplicate files

The guest operating system has 4 virtual drives mapped on it (36 GB, 36 GB, 146 GB and 17 GB), they're all on the same data store.

I recently ran into a problem of the short of space data store and noticed that this server has files vmdk file duplicate for each of these disks (as shown in the attached picture).  I'm guessing that VDR create snapshots, and it has messed up at one point (VDR does not currently work for this server).

    The original vmdk files were:

    cnmonitoring1_1.VMDK

    cnmonitoring1_2.VMDK

    The news are:

    cnmonitoring1 - 000001.vmdk

    cnmonitoring1_1 - 000002.vmdk

    etc...

It seems that all virtual disks are mapped to the new vmdk files.

I need to get this server cleaned, so I can reclaim space.  The data store is a total size of 500 GB and all the servers on this data bank should be around 350 GB, but I currently only 42 GB free because of this server.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

    Welcome to the community.

    These files are snapshot files.

Have you consolidates your wink, but you need to free up space.

Or you can clone your virtual machine in another data store (this will consolidate the last State).

  • VMware - conservation/restoration of disk data recovery

    Hi all

I'm running proof of the notion of trial DR VM environment and having to present a lot of joy in the test functions, however I came across a show-stopper potential for potential users/customers who might be considering using this solution but wanted to run it by you guys/girls to see if there was a way round the problem.

My problem is that some clients should not have large storage arrays to store backups on the LUN/RDM presented on the recovery server so probably would seek to reduce retention settings to allow a certain amount of jobs daily/weekly on the disk. In addition to this, I can foresee visitors eager to save tape backup LUN data to comply with the laws/policies of company etc.

So in light of that, if I wanted to backup the datastore/rdm containing backup data of the server of vDR to strip and at a later stage proceed to a restoration (i.e. a VM/file expired beyond the defined retention vDR server); How do I go about importing files/data on the server and then see these objects from backup on the server of vDR?

Is it possible or a feature that I missed or is there a work around for this?

Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome!

    Concerning

    Don

The process to recover a missing job is to restore in the logic/RDM unit number catalog and backup files, it means all the files in the VmwareDataRecovery folder since the vDR read the catalog is once again all the backups and will be able to restore the files.

Different is the case where you have accidentally deleted the vDR, basically, the main problem is that the vDR do not refresh information automatically from the restore point. It would be nice to "force" this reading, but to do this, we should be able to connect to the device.

  • data recovery 1.2 only supports 2 destinations at once

I started with vdr1.1 and had 3 installation of destinations (due to the limit of 256 GB), 2 were databases shared (from physical disk 1 500gig) and 1 was a network share.

I installed the unit version 1.2 to version 1.1 of 'upgrade '.

the mount on the part of network went well and automatically mounted 1 the datstores, but I can climb is no longer the third destination, a warning window

presents itself. indicating the unit of data recovery is no longer supports more than 2 destinations both...

Right now I can't do anything while I wait for the integrity check. (looks like it will take hours)

    so

    My questions are:

can I move those jobs to other databases without creating new jobs?

Can I set up another new device to use this database?

Could I "extend" a data to another store

Any other recommendations would be useful

VMware has always said not more than 2 destinations, but they did not restrict it.

    now they do looks like.

However, there is some good news here.  VMWARE now allows up to 10 devices VDR vCenter Server and you can switch between them from the vdr plugin.  so you can set up 2 separate devices vdr with 2 destinations, which allows you to spread your load of deduplication on several hosts.

now I have 2 setting up devices vdr with 2 vmfs3 vmdk depupe stores and will perform tonight my initial backups.  wish me good luck.

p.s. I didn't have much luck upgrading my 1.1 restore points, I thought that it's probably just better start fresh... you can keep the vmdk files if you have the room incase you have to perform a restore, just not config in the new vdr, or mount them.

    just a suggestion.

  • Trying to Downoad free ESXi: Getting "VMware vSphere evaluation expired '.

    Hi all

I have a little problem of license: I tried to download vSphere 4U1 (I especially need vSphere Windows 7 Client), but after the connection and try to download the free version, I get a on a web page that says 'VMware vSphere evaluation expired' and "Ready to buy?" tab.

True, I had downloaded the vSphere 4 in early August and this 60-day evaluation period has expired a long time ago. But due to the problems with vDR (itself known and many negative entry in the list) I have not yet decided on the version of vSphere, I need to buy... a lot of money at stake

So: Is there a limit on all the free data center products that a registered user can download for "free trial"? I have a few new servers available for tests and did not want to go through the installation of vSphere 4 + update to v4 U1, especially since the laptop management runs Windows 7, where - according to me - vSphere Client and update manager will not work without some pretty nasty sounding hacks.

    Thanks for your answers,

  • Slow serious performance issues and causing VDR integrity checks

    Hello

I'm pretty experienced with VMware and VDR.  My unit VDR version is 1.2.0.1131.  I am backup on a Windows Storage Server (R2 2003) who has two 500 GB partitions that are shared using the default value in Windows (CIFS) sharing mechanism.  VDR, I have two destinations that simply access the network shares (two partitions of 500 GB on the storage server).

Run the backup and restore is good.  However, integrity checks complete not only take a long time (up to 24 hours) but cause the storage server to be so callous that other tasks like data restores, must wait until the integrity checks complete.

The storage server uses the SATA drives and so I hope that the simple answer to this is not just update more quickly when you run disk technology.

Research on similar issues, it seems that I have some options to try.

    1. change the size of the IrpStackSize value on the storage server.  http://communities.VMware.com/thread/213924?start=0 & tstart = 0

    2. change the datarecovery.ini file.  http://h20000.www2.HP.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/document.jsp?lang=en & CC = US & TaskID = 110 & prodSeriesId = 420496 & prodTypeId = 18964 & objectid = c01918186

    3. use NFS instead of CIFS.  http://communities.VMware.com/message/1769144#1769144

    4. turn to level the unit VDR version?

Once, since I'm fairly knew to this I'd appreciate some further guidance and expert advice.

    Thanks for your time

I can't answer your question. Personally, I would like to make the storage server on the Windows network file server. A work. that it is really good. I would look for another storage device. I don't know the rest of your infrastructure. If you have a SAN I would look for something to compliment it. Replication comes to mind. If you do not have a SAN there are many NAS devices. Choose a budget amount and start searching. You can also use a server that matches your business listing and fill it with the readers. You can install a standard linux distribution and enable the native NFS server. A configuration to a single line is all it takes. You can add management Open-e, Starwind, FreeNAS software.
