Guest operating system is hard duplicate files

The guest operating system has 4 virtual drives mapped on it (36 GB, 36 GB, 146 GB and 17 GB), they're all on the same data store.

I recently ran into a problem of the short of space data store and noticed that this server has files vmdk file duplicate for each of these disks (as shown in the attached picture).  I'm guessing that VDR create snapshots, and it has messed up at one point (VDR does not currently work for this server).

The original vmdk files were:

cnmonitoring1_1.VMDK

cnmonitoring1_2.VMDK

The news are:

cnmonitoring1 - 000001.vmdk

cnmonitoring1_1 - 000002.vmdk

etc...

It seems that all virtual disks are mapped to the new vmdk files.

I need to get this server cleaned, so I can reclaim space.  The data store is a total size of 500 GB and all the servers on this data bank should be around 350 GB, but I currently only 42 GB free because of this server.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Welcome to the community.

These files are snapshot files.

Have you consolidates your wink, but you need to free up space.

Or you can clone your virtual machine in another data store (this will consolidate the last State).

  • VMDK size differs from that indicated by the guest operating system

Hi, my said guest operating system disk hard is full to 30 GB, but the parameters of the virtual machine, it is said the vmdk is currently only 2.4 GB.  Anyone know what could be going on here?

Configure you the VM to expand on the use and create NOT entirely the disk, it saves space.

The VM disk is being created in 2 GB increments up to full capacity. And the OS disk is not full, it's (potential) CAPACITY of the disc, the drive was full the VMDK more would certainly be 31.5 GB as well.

  • Cannot run the program in the guest operating system

    Hello

I'm trying to run a program file (an .exe) in a virtual machine via vCO using executeCommandInGuest.

The thing is that the .exe file starts a user interface to display the status (do not ask for entry) when it runs locally. When I call the script of vCO, I get the following error:

Error while executing command (can not run the command: InternalError: a general error occurred: a program could not run on the guest operating system (name of the dynamic Script Module: executeCommandInGuest #40) (name of the dynamic Script Module: executeCommandInGuest #46))

If I try to call a .bat file in the VM that starts the program of the WF works but the .exe file is never started in the virtual machine.

If I specify to run another .exe for example ping.exe only complete control of WF and if I specify a .bat file that call ping.exe he also successfully complete.

There is no silent mode for the .exe I need performed.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Magnus

The problem was caused by the user access control. Put forever does not resolve the problem, disable it through the user interface, restart the virtual machine, and then continue with my script.

  • T of what guest operating systems will start the VMware Support for EFI?

Is there a list of support guest OS for the EFI firmware?  Mianly supported by VMware - do not try, fail, call support technique etc etc.   My experiences on the TP forums, I guess that there is not.  Some OS (such as Windows Server) come with a screen to choose BIOS/EFI firmware.  If not, you need to go to setting > Hard Drive OPtions-> advanced _ > boot using EFI.  In particular there at - it versions of Linux that you give you option of BIOS/EFI firmware before the confutation of VM is complete, so the hard drive then be custom.

We will officially support the EFI firmware for any guest operating system to which all the following conditions are met:

    • We list this guest operating system, supported in the VMware Compatibility Guide for operating systems and your virtualization product.
    • The guest operating system supports EFI in the operating system installation media.
    • Support the guest OS EFI has no catastrophic flaws (for example Fedora 12 x 64, FreeBSD 11, Centos 6.0 through all the 6.2 have catastrophic flaws).

New computer virtual assistant of 11 workstation has only the option of EFI firmware for Windows clients.  Special mention, do not yet support us Easy Install for non EFI customers in 11 workstations.  For all other customer support EFI OSes, you can do a manual installation after choosing the EFI firmware in the virtual machine settings > Options > Advanced > Boot with EFI instead of the BIOS.

I don't understand your concern about the personalization of the hard drive... Could you elaborate?

    See you soon,.

  • The VM startup slow down, delay long before the guest operating system begins startup

Evaluation of VMWare to set up the VM for the maintenance of the software. Set up a virtual machine, install Windows 7 SP1 32-bit, everything works well. Once started, the performance is excellent.

The symptom is that when you start the virtual machine, either starting from cold boot or suspend, there is a significant delay before the power of VMware on / start screen is displayed. Once it appears, the operating system starts starting (or the recovery of wakefulness) quickly and performance is normal after that. During the start-up period, the whole system is insensitive, host and guest operating system.

See the extract of newspaper below to 09:54:28.619 moment where the delay occurs followed by the entry concerning 09:55:11.625 time when start continues, a delay of 43 seconds during which nothing seems to happen and the system does not respond. After that, everything is fast.

    Hello

I know what you want to say as I've seen sometimes as well. But especially on older hardware or if there are problems with regard to particular resources. For example I saw this on an ESX host (yes I know product different) where there was a problem with the storage not enough providing IOPS / s.

I saw also this on older versions of Linux (IIRC 7) workstation where the host had an Atom based CPU, there I updated to more RAM and a more recent version of the workstation and the problem disappeared.

Then I also saw it on the 4/5 merger when my host operating system was out of memory and I tried to start another operating system to prompt anyway.

I do not consider a normal behavior for the slow start and does not respond, it is an indication that the hypervisor is seeking some resources, but does not receive them fast enough.

The reasons can be many. Indeed things like antivirus could be biting you if she tries to analyze all files (including virtual disks) at their opening.

FWIW, I also understand the support response as would be expected if your host is a bit thin on the resources (for example, trying to start a VM 1 GB on a host Win7 with only 3.5 GB of RAM) and if the virtual machine runs OK after the initial startup delay, it's mostly just an annoyance.

  • Sharing of content between the guest operating system

    Hello

Y at - it a simple way to share content between operating systems.

We have invited several BONES that make similar task. Run us simultaneously with the slightly different variant, but basically, most of the files that are needed in each guest operating system are the same.

What I want to achieve is to build a repository of centralized files accessible across operating systems. I'm running Win7 and WinXP Win2008 OSes on ESXi 5 comments.

I found this thread, but it is too old.

    http://communities.VMware.com/message/630923#630923

I'm hoping there have been changes since that thread has been discussed.

    Thank you

Well, I can't tell you much about the user experience expected without knowing the network load. However, if install you the file server as an another VM on the same host, you will have at least a 1GBit/s connection between the virtual machines.

  • Installation of a guest operating system

    Hey guys,.

I am trying to install a guest operating system in an ESXi 5 using the vSphere Client 5, but no matter what I choose as source CD / DVD for the virtual machine, he repeated to me that it is not found, I tried customer CD/DVD, ISO image, host device and I get the same for all.

Before ask you, Yes, I didn't click the button connect/disconnect cd/DVD devices and chose the right one, but I get nothing, any ideas what I might be missing?

    Thank you

Just to be safe. Did you download the ISO on a VMFS datastore file (for example using the datastore browser) and connect the ISO from there. Also, make sure that "Connect at Power On" is checked in the virtual CD-ROM drive of the virtual machine.

  • Serial port under guest operating system does not work

Running VMWare Workstation 7.1.3 on win 7-64 bit. Guest operating system is win 7 32 AND Windows XP (32 bit). I followed the instructions on connecting to the host serial port. However, there is no access to serial port a guest OS. Serial Port sniffer running on the host shows NO ACTIVITY on the port operating system serial host.

Even serial device, attached and if running on the host works very well.

    Any ideas?

    Steve

I doubt that the documentation is correct for what is with VMplayer 3 on Windows TGV serial ports is.
    Read my notes http://faq.sanbarrow.com/index.php?solution_id=1007

I removed the option of thinprint and reconfigured the serial port in the vmx file attached.

Turn off the virtual machine and replace the existing by the attached vmx file.
    Then try again

If it still does not - change
    Serial0.yieldOnMsrRead = "FALSE".
    TO

  • What iso (HR) Centos to use when installing on VM guest operating system?

When you install a guest operating system Centos 5.5 on a VSphere VM, I'm a bit puzzled by this what iso i386 to download & install.

    • DVD: seems to be the right choice for me, although large

    • CD 1 of 7: will probably ask me to mount other CD.

    • the netinstall CD: should work if the virtual machine has network connectivity good to contribute to the installation

Thanks in advance for all advice here... Lyle

I always use DVD iso file (download via bittorrent client). Not only that you get everything you need in a single iso file, but it is easier to manage on the data store (where you keep the iso files OS). Locate a mirror which seems to be more close to where you are (in the world/country) and allows to start with. Of course, your connection speed will dictate how long it takes to download the file. I also usually download files iso of OS at home, so that I don't have to worry about sucking to the top of the bandwidth in the office, and I have no need to worry about a firewall rule prevents me to get the files.

Once the installer has spent three or four cd iso files, I opted to enter the DVD ISO... It's simply more light and to download the iso DVD because it does not worry about change iso files during installation, or have several virtual cd/dvd drives connected to a single virtual machine. It is also faster set-up, because that's what reading the single iso file, not seven.
