Virtual machine is unable to ping host ESX

I have a server host to ESX 3.5 Update 4 and I had a weird problem.  I searched for days and can't find an answer then perhaps someone could help me.

My ESX host works perfectly.  I can manage it by Internet or by customer VI.  Setting up and installation of virtual computer very well market.  The problem occus with the networking of several virtual machines.  I have a group of virtual ports for the virtual machine that is connected to a virtual switch that is bound to a physical card.  The service console is also connected to a single virtual switch. The problem is that only the first virtual machine that is put on will be able to connect to the internet and other devices and computers on the network.  I have 5 different VM with different operating systems and the same network settings.  Any one that I first start will work, but only that one first.  The rest of the virtual machine can ping only this virtual machine that was started first.  They don't ping to the ESX host or anything on the network.

The network gateway is 192.168.1.254, the ESX host is 192.168.1.110 and the VM is 192.168.1.111 - 115, the DNS is 192.168.1.50

All virtual machines have static IP.  They each have their own respective intellectual property, the walkways are all set to 192.168.1.254 and DNS to 192.168.1.50

Yet even as the first market works, and it works perfectly, can see everything on the network and connect to the internet.

SuryaVMware is absolutely perfect with his suggestion. I went through the same scenario on the 3750's a few months back myself.

    Hello

    I did a new install of vSphere 5.1 (previously 4.1 installed that works well). No vCenter for now.

    Running a virtual machine on LAN Paessler PRTG under Win 2 k 3 x 64.

    This virtual machine has been moved from 4.1 to 5.1, nothing has changed.

    This virtual machine can't ping the host. No monitoring WMI class too.

    A physical computer on the LAN can ping on host vSphere with no problems.

    What's wrong?

    Thank you

    Vincent

    According to the screenshots, the subnet mask, you use in your local network is 255.255.0.0. As a first step, please run ipconfig / all in the virtual machine to verify that the virtual machine is configured with the same subnet mask. Secondly, run the ping command from the virtual machine, rattling of its own IP to see if it succeeds.

    BTW. What type/model of virtual network adapter is configured for the virtual computer?

  • Virtual MACHINE is unable to ping host and vice versa

    It is a very strange problem.  VMWare support tried to understand this output as Dell.  So, I just throw it to the community to see if anyone else has experienced this problem and may have a solution.  I have 3 identical Dell R720 servers.  2 work with no problem, but 1 (let's call it vm8) gave me problems since day 1.  Reference verified Dell equipment today and has updated me the BIOS, firmware and drivers on vm8, which did not solve the problem.  VMWare technicians checked each parameter network in recent weeks and currently, they are not the cause.

    VM8 have ESXi installed 5.5.0.  The Server 4 has 2 NICs with 4 ports each.  Current configuration is vmnic 0-3 is connected to our LAN, 4-5 on our DMZ and 6-7 in our SAN (iSCSI). The AP will go up and down because VM8 loses connectivity to our isolation address (gateway).

    VM8 (Mgmt IP network is 172.20.100.9) has only 1 VM (172.20.100.40). Same subnet (255.255.255.0).  .9 happens to ping expiration.40 using vmkping.  When I ping.9 de.40, the first package gets a quick response, then all following packets timeout.  According to VMWare, when you ping in (VM to host) it does not go out through the card physical network to the physical switch.  Everything is internal with vmnic and vSwitch.  When I ping my gateway (172.20.100.1), the ping is successful.  When I ping.9 from my workstation, the first packet times out, then answered the following packages.  It is the exact opposite of ping the virtual computer.

    Here's a better ventilation-

    .9 VM8 host

    .40 VM on the host VM8

    .1 gateway

    .122 workstation over LAN

    .25 vRanger connection (physical server on LAN)

    Ping

    .9 40 (100% packet loss)

    first package de.40 a.9 (75% packet loss) Gets the response, then 3 timeout

    .9 a.122 good ping (0 packet loss)

    .122 a.9 (0 packet loss) good ping

    vmkping (75% loss).9 a.25 does not appear each packet that it is sent.  But other results, can I assume first package times out.

    first package de.25 a.9 (75% loss) has expired, the following 3 got a response

    .40 a.122 good ping (0 packet loss)

    . 122. 40 (100% packet loss)

    The 3 can ping a.1 (every 20 minutes on VM8 I get a "vSphere HA agent on this host failed isolation address 172.20.100.1"

    Also, throughout the day, I get the message - "vSphere HA agent on this host cannot reach some of the management of the addresses of network of other hosts, and HA is perhaps not able to restart the virtual computer if a failure of the host is displayed."  I came to work in the morning, and all my VMS on VM8 migrated to my other 2 hosts.  My backups don't work on VM on VM8.  I use vRanger connection and when I ping connection vRanger VM8 (physical server), the first package expires and the following packages get a response.  Then, when connection vRanger goes to back up my VM, runs aground due to loss of original packet.

    These are things I've already tried.  I tested individually each physical NETWORK adapter.  I removed all the ports on the two NIC to try to isolate a specific port. All the 4 vmnic is active adapters in network properties NIC Teaming management and I moved each vmnic individually to unused to test each port.  I replaced the Cat6 cables.  I used different Dell switches and various ports of the switch.  I even swapped the switch ports that host another employee, exclude a switch port configuration problem. In addition, port security is disabled on the ports.  I upgraded ESXi 5.5.0 to a newer version.  There is a known issue with the tg3 driver, which I've updated to the latest version without problem.  I also used tg3 workaround by disabling NetQueue.  And we do not use of VLAN. Dell technical support says that it is not a hardware problem and thinks it's a matter of layer 2, but does not know where.  Basically, it's an internal problem (meaning strictly on VM8) with vSwitches or vmnic or it's a material gremlin in our Dell R720 box.

    The final recommendation of Dell is to blow the ESXi server and install a clean copy.  It's extremely frustrating and I'm out of ideas.

    Thanks in advance.

    Any luck that you have an IP address that is duplicated on your network?

  • Unable Ping Host ESX - very weird question...

    Hello

    I have a question not yet no willingness so far. Please please help me if you have this issue before or a similar question.

    The question like this... 1 vm problem not pings from the ESX host. After reboot the VM, ESX able to ping back.

    Measures taken

    1 migrate this Virtual Machine to another host - done problem but always present

    2 check the connection as ping then found before restarting the virtual machine: -.

    On my side

    ============

    2.1 - ping our surveillance to ESX - OK

    2.2 - PIng ESX for VM - inaccessible Getting - not sure it's not main problem (previously ask our customer to reboot the virtual machine)

    On the client side

    =================

    Before restarting the virtual machine

    -------------------------

    1 Ping ESX, surveillance and other VM - ok

    After restart VM

    -----------------------

    1 Ping ESX, surveillance and other VM - ok

    Now on the ESX host. This virtual machine in ESX 1 before that. So I decide to migrate this virtual ESX 2 machine but problem still not solved. Another VM in ESX2 do not have this problem at all.

    Next action

    =========

    1. ask our customer to disable WGTA - not done by the customer (as our requirement can not remote for VM)

    We using vSphere 4.1 and the best part, this issue does not happen every day or week. Sometimes occur each week one - (which I think that maybe our fixed calendar client) and sometimes occur each week 2. Sometimes the best part happens 2 times a week.

    Thank you

    Finally after our user turn off the LGTO_Sync the problem solved. We have more of this problem of "bizarre".

    Thanks for this help.

  • Execute 4vCPUs virtual machines on an 8 core physical ESX host?

    I have to run 4 * 4 vCPUs on my ESX Server. I only ESX Server with 2 processors and each has 4 cores = 8 cores in total.

    Is that enough or what is best practical value if I have to run 4vCPUs?

    If you more search 100% CPU. It's ok if half of your vCPU do no actual work at any given instant, in fact quite common. If they do a real job, you will have a problem of great claim and you will see big time of loan that predict you. There will be no difference in the movement of 2 cpu invited if this is the case, because you always need the number of cores to support threads you have (assuming the same bitrate).

    In case the vCPU is not all busy or they are all busy together then you should be fine but it costs a treatment in order to keep the guest SMP in a valid state of ESX - threads must even if progress, they are not "occupied". If ESX is working hard to achieve this, then you will see CSTP esxtop elevation %. This means basically that ESX is having to stop/reschedule the son in the virtual machine just to keep active when the real work he would do otherwise. So at this point, you can better with smaller virtual machines. Order our planning on the blog document VROOM.

  • PowerCLi script to check if 2 virtual machines are on the same host

    Hello

    I'm nubby on PowerCLI and I would like to help in the construction of a script.

    The script should check if two virtual machines (named test1 and test2) are running on the same host in a vCenter and send a notification (email), if they do.

    Something similar with affinity / anti-affinite DRS rules (but not through the DRS enabled on vCenter).  My focus is on the affinity. In case this happens, I need vMotion one of them on an another ESXi host(manually or automated).

    What I have done until now is the following:

    Get - VM | Select Name, @{N = 'Cluster'; {E = {Get-Cluster - VM $_}}, '

    @{N = "ESX host"; {E = {Get-VMHost - VM $_}}, '

    @{N = 'vCenter'; E={$_. "(ExtensionData.CLient.ServiceUrl.Split('/') [2]}}, '"

    @{N = "Datastore"; {E = {Get-Datastore - VM $_}} | `

    Export-Csv - NoTypeInformation C:\Scripts\file.csv

    That becomes all the VMS and export a CSV file information:

    NameClusterESX hostvCenterData store
    test2cluster_testESXi_test1vCenter_test1:443datastore1
    Test1cluster_testESXi_test1vCenter_test1:443datastore1

    VM31.localcluster_test3ESXi_test3vCenter_test1:443datastore1

    Thank you.

    Try like this.

    $tgtVM = "test1", "test2".

    Get-VM-name $tgtVM | Group-object - property VMHost | %{

    if($_.) County - gt 1) {}

    $vm = $_. Group | Get-Random

    $esx = $vm. VMHost

    $tgtEsx = get-Cluster - $vm VM | Get-VMHost | where {$_.} Name - not $esx. Name} | Get-Random

    Move-VM - $vm - Destination $tgtEsx VM - confirm: $false

  • Best method to move virtual machines Linux of VC 2.5/ESX 3.5 to 4.0/ESX4 vCentre

    Guys,

    I have to move a number of them. The two groups are there. If it is not a question about the upgrade of the VC/ESX. I want to use the simplest method possible to move these VMs and here's my plan:

    1 copy the whole directory of VM from the data store on VC 2.5 to the data store on vCentre 4.

    2. Add the virtual machine to inventory in vCentre 4.

    3. upgrade VMware tools

    4. switch to hardware version 7.

    And that's all. Please let me know if this plan is feasible, or more importantly, no holes in the plan.

    Thank you

    Hello

    You have a few options:

    1. you can bring up the old data store for ESX 4.x and save the VM on vCenter 4.0.

    2. you can add that the host ESX to vCenter 4.0 3.5 move virtual machines in ESX 4.0 cluster.  You can use vMotion and Storage vMotion, according to your needs.

    3. you can use the stand-alone converter to make a hot cloning of Linux virtual machines in ESX 4.0.

    Best wishes / Saludos

  • Migrate virtual machines from HP G7(single host) for HP G8 (Cluster) without shared storage

    Hello

    I have 2 esxi host (hp dl 380 G8) and put them in a cluster and other host esxi (dl 380 g7) and I have no shared storage and use local disks just now I must spend my VM G7 server a cluster of the G8 but I want to know I can join my cluster g8 g7 and migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

    I want to know can migrate without downtime with localdisk? I have no shared storage

    Best regards

    BAbak

    can I join g7 to my cluster of the g8

    You can mix into clusters hosts all desired, even Intel and AMD at least that you enable EVC on the cluster (of course, HA or DRS require shared storage compatible/CPU). However, you need not to have even just cluster hosts to migrate virtual machines through vMotion between them.

    migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

    Don't know what this "web vmware' but yes, because ESXi 5.1, you can use"enhanced vMotion"to live migrate virtual machines without service interruption from one host to another, even without shared storage:

    Migration with vMotion in environments without shared storage

    The usual vMotion requirements apply. Also you can only live migrate virtual machines from the old host to the new hosts because of different generations of CPU (and back as long as you don't have bike powered virtual machines on new hosts).

  • Moving the virtual machine containing vCenter to another host ESXI

    I am currently learning/building my first setup of virtualization. I made the mistake of letting the size of the block of the data warehouses to 1 MB. Now, I need to rebuild one of my stores of data.

    I could use vcenter for all my other VMS out migrate to another server esxi. I do not know how to move the VM vCenter, because he must be stopped to be moved, but I need to use the tool of migration/converter to move, which seems quite accessible from within the virtual machine.

    Any ideas?

    Stop vcenter Server and unregister (remove the inventory) of the inventory of the ESXi host. Then use example of Veeam FastSCP to copy some files/folder of the virtual machine to the other hosts data store and register the virtual machine to the inventory of the ESXi host by right-clicking the file vmx (add to the inventory). Make sure that there are no snapshots on the server vCenter Server!

  • How to create a virtual machine on a stand-alone host?

    Hello

    as you know others my son, I created a workflow to create several identical virtual machines on a cluster.

    Since we do not only have clustered hosts, but also some autonomous machines, I need to modify the workflow to be able to create virtual machines on these hosts.

    The main stage of the workflow is obviously one that creates virtual machines.

    It is derived from one of the supplied workflow within the Orchestrator library, but in the end, there is not much difference.

    The original workflow uses this method to create a virtual machine:

    task = vmFolder.createVM_Task( configSpec, vmResourcePool, vmHost );

    I've omitted vmHost in my workflow, because I did not want the user to select the host in the Cluster.

    So my execution of the method looks like this:

    task = vmFolder.createVM_Task( configSpec, vmCluster.resourcePool);

    Now, I tried to get this method to create a virtual computer on a stand-alone host, but everything I tried, he failed.

    Does anyone have a solution or a trick, what I might try to make this work?

    Thank you very much

    Andreas

    For the root folder, try this:

    var parent = vmHost.parent;
    While (!) () parent instanceof VcDatacenter)) {}
    parent = parent.parent;
    }
    var vmFolder = parent.vmFolder;

  • Do we not have to change the settings for the virtual machine once moved from 2.5 ESX to vSphere 4.1?

    Hi guys,.

    I just wanted to check, once the virtual machines are migrated from ESX 2.5, 2.5 Vcenter to ESX 4.1, Vcenter 4.1 of the NFS datastore on the iSCSI data store.

    Do I have to make changes to the vm settings?

    To use the features to enhance available with ESX 4.1 what I need to change the virtual disk to logical Bus to LSI logic? What is recommended or is not serious?

    It will be very useful for me to know if there is any need for changes to be made other than on the virtual machine upgrade vmware tools.

    Thank you

    You try to run ESX 2.5 VM on ESX4.1, if that's the case then ESX 2.5 VM are not supported on ESX 4.1

  • You can force two virtual machines to run on different hosts?

    I'm looking to see if we can score two virtual machines to never run on the same host as the other. I thought I had seen this ability in later documentation but can't find it now.

    Thanks for any help!

    Hello.

    If you use the DRS, then you can use a rule of DRS 'separate virtual machines.  Go to the Cluster settings, change, then see the VMware DRS-> section to implement rules.

    It is a known problem with the Windows XP Virtual Machine.

    In the future if you come accorss this question here, that's what you can do.

    * Go to your folder of user account > My Virtual Machines. Click once on the XP Mode of Windows to highlight and in the menu bar, you will notice the settings option. Clicking on it will open the settings of the Virtual Machine window (Make sure VM is stopped to make changes). It should look something like this http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/shetty_akash/VirtualMachineDefaultsettings.png

    * Try to start the Virtual Machine if it invites still the user name password click on tools bar menu in Windows XP mode VM window, and then click enable integration features.

    Let me know if you face this problem again and the steps above don't solve the problem.
