Virtual memory pagefile resets automatically

Can you please explain why I repeatedly set the virtual memory on my win 7 x 64 PC (16 GB of RAM, 3 hard drives).

Whenever I set up with the swap file is not located on the C: drive, it works well for a few weeks maximum, then spontaneously returns, on C: it's getting really annoying.

I don't want a page on C: file - it's a SSD and decrease wear a tear of additional access if one of my goals.  I always establish either a managed by system pagefile on the other two disks (d and e) or set the fixed size too - it makes no difference - windows accepts the new settings, then change them randomly in a few weeks.

If I can't change those settings, why pretend to give me the option?

Not happy.

If I have a pagefile on the C: why Windows allow it to be turned off?

Because the controls for the page file are simple and global. If Windows detects that the need to create a page on C file, it will do and it has always been like that...

I must ask, why this is not in the help information?  I shouldn't go to an online forum because something does not work in the way that Windows insists it does.

Creation of help files is a huge job, and if help files included all imaginable configurations, you would be hard-pressed to run to find out what you wanted and could be grinding too on this subject... :-)

Surely with hundreds of MB of updates, I did it they could include an update of info ToolTips and help for this feature.

Yes, they could, but there is no hard and fast rule about page files other than the fact that all THE Windows operating systems, and others, need one.

Unless you disable virtual memory completely Windows makes no mention of this requirement and when it does it says a minimum 800 MB file.

Virtual memory should not be disabled completely. Each source has its own algorithm to work on the optimal size for a swap file. The thought was that at least 500 MB for dump files. That may have changed, and in all cases, it is always preferable to provide a little more than the bare minimum...

I would also add that in two generations previous Windows, it was not a requirement, and I have to marvel at the stupidity of introducing it.

He was ALWAYS a requirement, but Microsoft have changes to allow greater freedom of Windows 7. Thinking change over time and what was good x years there may be irrelevant today...

Sad to say, it's typical Microsoft and only the wheel that squeaks Gets the oil, so now I'm grinding.

It is not more typical of Microsoft it's others. You just have not met similar problems on other platforms... :-)

Then why do you want to move your file on the SSD page? With the amount of RAM you have, page file reads/writes will be minimum and an SSD is the absolute ideal of a file of page anyway. Wear of SSD drives can be overstated, as much as SSDS are becoming better, and in all probability, you will need a new computer before your SSD wears

  • Virtual memory warning reset itself - problem of paging file No.

    Hello

Since my upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. .everytime I restart my computer, maintains memory virtual reset itself. It keeps the switch back to "No paging file" and the "exécution Options" window keeps popping up when I restart my com.

I tried value "Automatically manages the size of pagefile for all readers" and even "system managed size" and "custom size." When I try to reopen the window, it gives me this pop up:

"Windows will create a temporary swap file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. File size of total paging for all disk drives may be a little larger than the size you specified.

I tried to delete reg entry and see if it will fix itself... no agreement.   I have 3 GB of RAM...

Disabling AFS.sys (sc config start = disabled afs) has toured my situation when I had this problem (see http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/c5cfe9d0-e3d8-4625-85b1-3efdf04cd1a0 for full details).

Arrive at an elevated command prompt (Démarrer\Tous Programs\Accessories - right-click on command prompt and select "Run as Administrator") and type the command above (sc config start = disabled afs).  Press enter and you will get a confirmation message that the Setup is complete.  Reboot and you should be able to put your swap file.

Don't know why this happens, but starting from the thread that above, it appears that AFS.sys really did a lot for you, and my Win7 upgrade system works well without any problem in this configuration.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi steilacoom.

Best option is if Windows manage size of pagefile for all readers. Windows automatically sets the best size of swap file and you don t have to do anything.

So just check the option automatically manage paging file for all readers size and get you the best performance and don t have any problems with the pagefile.

    Concerning

  • my computer continues to run out of virtual memory

I deleted programs and defragged my computer.

To make sure that we are talking about the same thing.

Exactly how do you know that you run 'Virtual memory' specifically?

Virtual memory is actually a 'swap file' specially allocated space on the hard drive. Most of the facilities have it set to automatically expand and shrink as needed. If freeing space on your hard disk and Defrag is reasonable.

The amount of used and free space on the hard drive you have?

You should also check the amount of virtual memory allocated.

    1. Open the 'System' using the shortcut dialog
    2. Notice how ' installed memory (RAM): "you have.
    3. Press or click on advanced system settings. You may be prompted for an administrator password or to confirm your choice.

    4. On the Advanced tab, under performance, tap or click settings.

    5. Press or click the Advanced tab, and then under virtual memory, press or click on modify.

    6. Claire runs it automatically the size of pagefile for all drives check box.

    7. Under drive [Volume label], tap or click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.

    8. Press or click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the initial size (MB) or maximum size (MB) box, type or click on set and then press or click OK.

In general, the recommendations are that you should have 1 to 3 times your RAM memory allocated to virtual memory.   If I have enough free space on the hard drive, I personally prefer the size of the max and min even swap file.

Originally, in the 1980s and the beginning of the 90s HD space is at a premium and so was RAM (I paid $5000 for my first computer with 2 MB RAM and 80 MB of free disk space!). It made sense to let the system allocate more swap file space according to the needs, and then free it up. But this approach also has the effect of fragmenting the HD.  Now ship computers with RAM that is literally orders of magnitude larger than at the time and so are HD, in fact, if you have lots of RAM, say more than 4 GB for a home user, I've seen some recommendations to minimize the size of the swap file. These same days budget computers come with more than enough disk space that continuously allocate enough virtual memory is not a constraint.

If you set a constant pagefile size, it's probably a good idea to defragment the paging file too. This requires special tools to defragmentation.

FYI: this is the wrong forum and category to ask this question. You should ask her in the Windows forum.

Please could I have a few tips specific given by someone so me (a person of no pc specialist) can I try to fix this problem without spending money I don't have or sending it anywhere be it fixed because I can not afford to do so, but I need to work a lot faster. It has always been a slow Tablet but now it is sometimes ridiculous. Sometimes it's 'OK', but it is not ALWAYS admirable.

Windows works the way it is supposed to work.  How much memory is being used by the system and applications running exceeds the sum of physical memory (RAM) and the file for the current page, Windows automatically increases the size of the page file (unless your hard drive is close to full).  The message you see Windows reacts to a heavy load on your system - it is not the result to set the filename of the page.

When the message says: "Look in the help", you should do it.  Click Start > Help and Support, and then type
    virtual memory
in the search box.  Look for the section titled "Managing your computer's performance."

A good explanation of how Windows XP deals with 'virtual memory' starts here--> http://www.theeldergeek.com/paging_file.htm in particular, you should read the section on 'Sizing page file'

If your system is slow, it is because it is overloaded or with applications that you run intentionally malicious (you do not give the basis of your belief that you are sure that you don't have a malware problem).  Take a look at the processes listed in the Task Manager.  Do you know what they all are?  Do you really need for each of them to run?  Those who take the biggest percentage of cycles CPU?  Don't bother looking at the 'memory' column - which will really help you in determining which slows things.

If your system is like most, you'll probably multiple instances of svchost.exe running.  It's normal.  You can use Process Explorer to see what svchost is doing (details here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/list-services-running-under-svchost.exe-process/) but you can try this first easy way:

Open a command prompt window (start > run > cmd > OK)
In the black command prompt window, type the following line and press enter

    Tasklist/SVC /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe".

[This is an 'eye' tiny 'eff' after the slash - abbreviation for filter]

You will get a list like this:

    Image name PID Services
    ========================= ====== =============================================
    Svchost.exe 1148 DcomLaunch, TermService
    Svchost.exe 1248 RpcSs

  • Windows correctly diagnosed a State of lack of virtual memory

I got this message three times now. I'm only running 3 programs and IE is not one of them.

    Hello

    Step 1:

If you receive warnings that virtual memory is low, you need to increase the minimum size of your pagefile. Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file to the RAM memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB) and maximum size of 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. If you see warnings at these recommended levels, and then increase the minimum and maximum sizes.

1 open the system by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then click System.

    2. in the left pane, click Advanced system settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. on the Advanced tab, under performance, click settings.

    4. click the Advanced tab, and then under virtual memory, click on change.

    5. clear handles it automatically the size of pagefile for all drives check box.

    6. under drive [Volume name], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.

    7. click on custom size, enter a new size in megabytes in the initial size (MB) or maximum size (MB) box, click on set and then click OK.

Increases in size usually don't require a restart, but if you decrease the size, you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. We recommend that you do not disable or delete the paging file.

For more information, please see the link below:

Thus, according to this link, the procedure is to:

Start > Search > type: cmd
When cmd appears in the above results, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". Provide the password/OK to the UAC prompt, and a command prompt opens. At the prompt, type:

SC config afs start = disabled [Enter]

and then quit the command prompt. Note that there is no space after 'start' but there is a after the equal sign.

The thread referenced in this link gives more details. Please note that I have not tried this since my Win7 pagefile is fine and I don't want to spoil it. I don't have a testbed box or VM to experiment on this point. YMMV Yes.

  • Satellite 1100: Excel keeps freezing - too low virtual memory

I have a satellite 1100. My Microsort Excel program keeps freezing (mainly when I print or you are trying to save) and then tells me to stop.

So, I also have a message icon telling me that I am low on virtual memory. Microsoft stop related to memory being low?

How can I increase the memory? Or do I just need a new laptop! Help, please.

    Hello

Satellite 1100 is really an old classic, but he should be able to use common desktop applications such as Word or Excel with no problems
Virtual memory also known under the name a paging file is a file on your disk (default C:\pagefile.sys) than Windows applications and use more physical memory (RAM) according to your needs. The default and the recommended of pagefile.sys size is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. Virtual memory is the amount of physical memory and the pagefile. So, if your computer has 512 MB of RAM, there is a page file 768 MB by default, for a total of 1.25 GB of physical + virtual memory.

So what to do in your case? Generally, the RAM upgrade should solve this problem. You can also try to increase the size of the pagefile.sys.
This can be done in system-> tab advanced properties-> Performance settings-> advanced-> virtual memory change tab.

After the change of virtual memory, you have to restart the laptop again.
If this will not help then an upgrade of RAM would be required or a new laptop effective ;)

    What? Virtual memory?
    Do you mean the pagefile?
Virtual memory is known as a page file or a swap file. Windows applications and use this file on the disk (default C:\pagefile.sys) in addition to physical memory (RAM) required.
