Vista - can only map a drive to IP\share, not machinename\share

After an upgrade on up a laptop Vista SP1, this computer can now only map drives to the actions on the network by using the IP address of the remote computer.  Example:

NET use M: \\machinename\sharename DOES NOT WORK

NET use M: \\192.168.0.115\sharename WORK

It seems that the WINS or netbios or something like that does not offer name resolution to IP for local machines.

Any ideas?

With a lot of troubleshooting using packet sniffing, I discovered because of NBNS Comodo firewall blocking responses - so this machine cannot resolve an IP machine names.  Have not yet found how to configure this firewall to allow the NBNS answers to pass.

  • Question: How can I format external drive in exFAT? NOT in NTFS!

OK, so frustrated that I had to go through the hedges to sign up here to ask a question like that. Why can I NOT format exFAT? I have many external HDDs that were formatted in exFAT under WIndows XP Pro but my new system, completely updated Windows 7 Professional, I can't format external drives of exFAT. The option is NOT available. In the Format window, file system, is the only option: NTFS (default), there is no other option. I googled the * on this issue and found no answer. This external hard drive MUST be formatted as a disc exFAT. Period. Someone please help.

I'm surprised the research online increase this... You can do it from the command prompt, but not from this dialog box.  Here's how:

-Open a command prompt by typing cmd in the start/search box, right click on the cmd search result and select "Run as Administrator"
-Type format g: FS:exFAT , then press ENTER to start formatting the G drive as exFAT
To view all other options, type format /? and press ENTER.
  • Can't map network drives via a RDP to Windows Server 2012 connection

I have yet to find a definite answer on this topic, so I hope that someone will have encountered it here.

Access us an application on a remote server of 2012 hosted through RDP connections in two different sites.  This application outputs files in a folder that I need mapped to Windows 7 PC local.  After the RDP connection, I go to Windows Explorer and you try to map a network drive using a UNC name, for example: \\IP address\D$ \folder name and check the box "use different credentials.

At this point, what happens depends on what profile of I use.  If I use the profile that was created when installing Windows Server (admin profile) it works fine.  If I use any other profile, or another admin profile, it does not work, and I can't understand why?

During the inspection, the two profiles admin seem to be the same!

I know that I can map drives the other direction (take my drives mapped with me RDP) but this is not acceptable because several PC (on different sites) will be locally run software that needs a path set for the location of the files, that creates the remote app.

    Any advice will be appreciated.

  • DVD RW drive has an error code of registry 19. I can't use the drive and it is not visible as a drive.

I tried looking for solutions, uninstall driver and reboot, reinstall the software provided with the machine, running regecure software to clean the registry and nothing has solved the problem so far - you have ideas?

19 code means there is a driver conflict such as two devices attempt to use the same

Step 1: Please do all the same underneath if you did some before as is often total
a process that solves the problem.

Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click on the device - driver tab.
Click on update drivers (this will probably do nothing) - RIGHT click ON the drive - uninstall.
RESTART this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue

Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a coward

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then check the cables

Some DVD players do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the system manufacturer

I found some articles that show you how to remove & reinstall everything without use of the physical disks. It is to restart my MacBook, pressing command-R, will using this toerase my hard drive and disk utilities

However, when I try to wipe my drive, this error message appears: "erase disc failed with the error: failed to unmount disk.»

  • I can do a recovery drive, but it is not valid when I try to use it to restore or freshen up my PC.

Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. After experiencing a few problems with graphics drivers AMD (missing tabs) I wanted to refresh the PC, or, if this does not work, restore to the default values.

When I try to restore/PC Refresh, however, there are "some files are missing," even if the recovery disk is connected. After you remove the USB and reconnect, the error is "the inserted media is not valid."

  • I have a valid product key for Vista Home Pemium. How can I get this drive?

I have an Acer Aspire 5610 and my hard drive died.  I need to reinstall windows, but have no disk.  I have a valid product key for Vista Home Pemium.  How can I get this drive?  Acer sells not more the disc for this model.

    Hello

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

As Acer does not have them, you have to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

Here's how to do a clean install of Vista using a DVD of Vista from Microsoft:

"How to do a clean install and configure with a full Version of Vista '

And once the operating system is installed, go to your computer manufacturer's website and get the latest drivers for your particular model or laptop computer.

And phone Activation may be necessary when you use the above installation method.

  • mapping of drives for win 7

How can I map a drive in windows 7 pro to be seen and opened on a xp pro machine? I will use the xp machine and should be able to connect to the drive of windows 7 to open several files, then I must be able to look at the car cale, not one or two folders. I have already mapped the Windows 7 machine so I can open a look on the drive and all folders on the xp machine, but may not be on the xp machine and watch the player window 7 and records.

    George

I got it to work! Thank you Jack your answers gave me some things to think and try. To make me able to map and be able to see the drive to win7 from XP was to put the Xp user name in the sharing and the safety of the car of win7. I had to set up a user with that name (from the XP computer user) in the machine win7 not the XP machine with the name win7 in user or I need to be an administrator. When I double click on the drive mapping win7 on the XP machine that requested that the user name and password (I typed in) and then I checked to remember password. Now when I double click disk it opens and shows me all the files on the disc. I can open the ones I need to use. Will have to play with the permmisions in sharing and security to see what I can leave it unticked (checked from now full access) on win7 machine. George

    Jim

    Hi Jim,.

Ø you are able to boot from the CD / DVD to reinstall Windows vista?

I suggest to try to start the computer in safe mode and see if you can boot to the desktop in safe mode. To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping key F8 during restart. Once you see the option to start in safe mode select and press to enter.

Access the link to learn more about how to start the computer in safe mode:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

If you can start the computer in safe mode, you can try performance a system restore to the point before the update have been installed and check if it helps.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

    A. Click Start, type system restore in the search box and then in the list click on the system restore program.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    B. in the System Restore dialog box, click on choose a different restore point and then click Next.

    C. in the list of restore points, click a restore point created before you started having the problem, and then click Next.

    D. click Finish.

The computer restarts and system files and settings are back to the State they were in when the restore point was created.

Access the link below to see the system restore:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/what-is-system-restore

You can also try to set the BIOS default settings on the computer and try to change the boot sequence to boot from the CD / DVD and try to reinstall Windows Vista by formatting the hard drive.

NOTE: Changing the BIOS / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from configuration can resolved BIOS/CMOS settings. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

I hope this helps. Let us know the results.

  • the driver installation error file not found

I have a mp3 player that works very well on my wifes XP system but when I try and use it with Vista I get error installation driver... file not found. I tried all 3 usb ports... no luck.  I uninstalled the device... nothing.  Then I tried to plug in a USB stick... of the United Nations recognizes the device. I tried on everthing that I found online.  I would like to reinstall Vista but I have it on CD, I don't have the product code.

    Rick

Are you sure you have the correct drivers for Vista and that the device is compatible with Vista?  Just because it works on XP there's no guarantee that it will work on Vista (especially if you use XP drivers).  What is the manufacturer, the brand and the model of mp3 player?  What version of Vista are you using?

Please answer these questions in your answer.  Also check with the manufacturer for drivers updated firmware and/or software compatible with your device and your version of Vista and try to install them and see if that makes a difference.

Thank you.  I look forward to your answer with responses and progress that you make with the drivers.
