Vista disk defragmentation

I just bought a computer laptop dv6-1030us, which has the Vista OE. My desktop computer has the ENP in XP. In XP, there's a graphic on Disk Defragmenter screen that shows how cluttered the HD is. It also lets you look at the graph that defragmentation is done. I was not able to find a screen similar to Vista, so I wonder if I'm missing something. The screen only I found allows you to defragment the HD, but shows not the status or how badly cluttered the HD is. It took over 2 hours to run and gave me a message at the end the HD doesn't have to be defraged currently

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Vista was release the graph feature.

There are a number of available free defragmenters if you want the chart to return.

I agree that it was a stupid decision to remove in the first place as without it you don't know how long it will take and you can't determine whether or not he needs a defrag that is left, have apparently all knowledge, Vista.

    Hello

    Run the sfc/scannow command.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929833

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click principally madeprograms,Accessories, right-clickguest, and then clickrun as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or clickallow.

    Hi islgrl10,

Alternatively, you can also view the partition on which you try to run disk defragmentation, it may be corrupt or have some bad sectors that might have prevented disk defragmentation utility runs successfully.

To check for errors on a partition,

    1. click on Start button, and then type command prompt and run as administrator.
    2. in the command prompt, type chkdsk /f and press to enter.
    3. When you are asked to plan the check disk on the next reboot, type 'y' or 'Yes' and restart your computer to run the utility chkdsk on your computer.

    Vista
    Defragmenter

    Hi Augie,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    1. you run defrag disk for the first time?

Disk Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your hard drive and brings together fragmented files so that your computer can run more efficiently. We must keep in mind that the Disk Defragmenter uses disk access low priority and processor so that it is not influence your current running programs. This automatically translates a slower process. Disk defragmentation can take a long time if you run it for the first time and also depend on the space of hard disk and available data. If may take up to 15-16 hours, depending on the data and the bad clusters on the hard drive.

    Try the suggested methods.

    Method 1

If you want to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    Method 2

You can run a disk scan command to remove bad sectors on the hard drive, then run Disk Defragmenter.

    1. open the computer by clicking the Start button, click computer.

    2. right click on the hard drive you want to check, and then click Properties.

    3. click on the sur l' onglet tab Tools and then, under error-checking, click check now.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that detects the scanning, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report a problem, but not to fix them.

To perform a full disk check, select search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan is trying to find and repair physical errors on the hard drive itself, and it may take much longer to complete.

To check for errors file and the physical errors, select automatically fix file system errors and search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    4. click on Start.

Depending on the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, do not use your computer for any other tasks while it checks errors.

Unfortunately there is no GUI when you use the Defragmenter supplied with windows Vista.

An alternative that is very popular is the free version of Auslogics Disk Defrag available on the following link.

I used a windows vista laptop, but my Disk Defragmenter was missing when I want the Defragmenter files... If anyone can help me... maybe I was deleted it... in any case can set it up again?

    Hi Wendylau,

Have you been able to see on the computer disk defragmenter earlier?

    Step 1

I suggest to find the defrag.exe or defragment the file to the following location and check if you can run from this location Disk Defragmenter.

    1. Click Start.
    2. Click on computer.
    3. Navigate to the location of the suite.
    4. C drive > Windows > System 32.
    5. Check defrag.exe or defragment the file.
    6. If you find the files try to run from there and check if you can run Disk Defragmenter.

If you want the file to put it in the start menu, on the right, click on defragment or defrag.exe and click on PIN to the start menu and check if it appears in the start menu.

Access the link below to find out how to run on the computer Disk Defragmenter.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/314848

    Step 2

If the steps above do not help, you can try to runSystem File Checker (SFC scan). The System File Checker tool to determine if the problem that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, the System File Checker utility analyzes the system files and replaces incorrect system files versions using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search.

    b. right click on cmd in the list programs, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue

    c. at the command prompts, the following line and press ENTER: sfc/scannow

When the analysis is complete, check to see if you can find Disk Defragmenter is again on the computer. Access the link below for more information about the System File Checker tool
