Vista SP 2 disaster

Today I had an update of popup windows in my taskbar. Vista Service Pack 2 has been ready to install. I downloaded the files and installed. After completing the installation of disaster struck. My computer starts up and then begins to check the files on the computer. He always hangs up on the same file again and again.

!! 0xc0000034!  44782/45239 (\Registry\MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MMC...)

The above is the file that he hangs up on. I ran the auto repair on Vista drive tool and the cause is the following:

Root Cause Found: A recent driver installation or upgrade may prevent the system from starting.
Windows cannont repair the computer automatically.

The only new update, I have installed is SP2 (hooray!)

I tried the system restore and it sits for hours "Finialzing restore files." After countless hours and wasted Saturday I don't know where else to turn. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It is all that remains; a clean install.

Or:

If you had a proper vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc.), you can try a repair inplace upgrade to see if that will fix it.

See if you can borrow a Vista DVD to your friends and try the above.

  • Disaster after installation of Vista updates

    I have Vista Home Premium.  Thursday night, that prompted, I installed 7 new updates. KB971468, 977165, 905866, 975560, 974145 978262 and 978251.
After restarting my laptop was totally different.  My office had lost a lot of icons, the background has been changed, the feel is different (not better!) and all links between my programs and document, photo, music, e-mail, Favorites etc. files have disappeared, along with some of my email account profiles.
Since the incident, it took me several hours to restore links between programs (who acted as if they had never been used before) and my files, restore all my preferences personally chosen, the default values and options and rebuild some of my e-mail account information, which had also been lost.  My office always behaves not as I'm used to with my toolbar quick launch now appearing to the right rather than the left at the bottom of the screen and after completely losing, without any sign of being able to recover, the button that clears all back on the desktop.  Also, I seem to have lost a long list of iTunes playlists.

I am now in trepidation each time I turn on my laptop, as it now does not always connects correctly to each time, sometimes having to be restarted to get in.  The first attempt to connect yesterday was greeted with the message "the user profile Service has no logon.  User profile cannot be loaded.  After re-booting, the opening of session acted properly.

In the 2 years I've owned my Acer laptop it has been totally reliable, until the installation of these updates.  I certainly am now very reluctant to install more Windows updates (currently 2 waiting there) until I know what caused my problems.   I rely on my laptop so that away from home for the operation of bank accounts and investment, as well as to stay in touch with many people by e-mail, so that the present situation causes me considerable problems.

Does anyone know why this happened, please?

What application or antivirus security suite is installed and your current subscription?  What anti-spyware (other than Defender) applications?  What third-party firewall (if applicable)?

    Backdoor.Tidserv [AKA Win32/Alureon] and MS10-015

Backdoor.Tidserv did a very good job in this sense, especially with the latest version (TDL3), which uses an advanced rootkit technology to hide its presence on a system by infecting one of the kernel low-level drivers and then cover his tracks. While the rootkit is active there is no easy way to detect the infection, and because he's so deeply in the core, most of the users can't see something wrong in the system... Even worse, because the infected driver is essential for the system boot, Windows will not start in Mode safe either [after installing MS10-015 on a machine infected].

TDSS rootkit silently owns the net

TDSS rootkit 3rd variant is the last member of the Tdss rootkit family that is spreading quickly all over the world. While a number of rootkits is just developed as a proof of concept, this is not the case. TDSS rootkit is well known corporate antivirus because of his goal to get full control over the infected computers and to use them as zombies for its botnet.

During these years, that he has always shown a team of skilled people behind it, which always applied advanced techniques often able to bypass antirootkit software. In fact, this last Variant can be easily named as the stealth rootkit in the wild.

This infection is having all the best of MBR rootkit, the best of the Rustock.C and the experience of the old Tdss variants. The result is an infection that spreads quickly on the Internet and it is without being detected by almost all security software and 3rd party anti rootkit software.

.. [20 Nov-09] terms no antirootkit is able to bypass disk filtering technical used by Tdss rootkit but, even if it were possible, this rootkit could not be detected by file size cross check because the size of infected files and original file are exactly the same.

  • Windows Vista disaster

For years, my family bought Dell computers with Windows software. However, I never was so disappointed by the product until I have Vista. Problems with my computer (office) began last week when my Windows Explorer began to cooperate not. I was looking for the computer for problems and solutions. He said that I had to do an update, that I followed through with. With the update, the problem continues, but the problem worsened with having to use safe mode. I tried to use a point system, but the computer froze everything just when I tried to do so. Then I read service packages, so I thought, maybe my computer needed to download that. BUT in trying to download the first package of service, the computer froze. My computer has not worked since. Windows is no longer rises, not even in safe mode. I tried to run the Startup Repair. The first time I tried it, until my windows did not work, it helped a little. But with the new development, it is unable to solve any problems. My screen remains black.

In addition to all this, I can't even fix my pc, as the dics I received that came with the computer when I bought it, never came with a CD to repair. More I think about the problem more I get even more angry because I bought this pc to replace a Dell laptop that has consumed due to overheating. The computer is only 1.5 years and really, don't want to have to buy an ANOTHER NEW ONE! If anyone knows what might be my options? I had my sister call Dell, and the guy on the phone said I could either pay $50 to talk to someone or use the Dell.com site. Bah, I can't on the computer so how Dell.com will help me?

If you could help me find a solution, I would be grateful!

    Thank you!

(PS I am writing from my brother's computer, and all the solutions I've tried to find so far have not helped)

    You have 2 options:

    1 try a startup repair.

    2. follow the Dell recovery process.
If the recovery of the Dells process does not work, contact Dell, because it isn't their recovery process, Microsoft.

Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.

When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.

  • Reinstalling operating system on the HP laptop which has Vista, Win 7 family Premium and Windows 7 Pro installed.

I have a HP Pavilion 6500 CTO (?) vintage 2008 model.  It came with Vista Premium. It is the only time that I forgot to make a recovery disk, but there is a sort of drive partitioned D that could be disaster recovery.  Anyway. .. . . .

I made one of the first Windows 7 Premium Upgrade downloads (I still have the right to download a backup).  I also bought 6 months later any when upgrading to Windows 7 Pro.

I would like to donate this laptop to a member of the family, so I would like to start with a clean slate of the operating system and drivers of origin if the wireless hardware and other works.  Two Questions

    1. If I create a recovery disc in the current state of the computer to have Win 7 Pro loaded, format the hard drive and then try to reinstall the OS from the recovery disk, which will load OS - Vista or Win 7 Pro?

    2. see question 1 - it is the best way to offer a new beginning for the system with a reformat and reinstall OS, or is there a better solution?  As I said, I don't have a recovery for the Vista operating system disk.

    Thanks in advance,

    W!

The question is a little more complicated.  When he restores the computer to the original state, it also roll back updates to the BIOS, or are those left intact? Why ask?  At the beginning, on this model of AMD, I had a fan / overheating issue that has been resolved by updating the bios to set when the fan on.  I might have to reinstall this update of the bios of HP!

The bios will not be affected.

    Hello johnsagney,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers Forum!

As Service pack 2 caused this problem on the computer, you can try to remove the Service Pack 2 Mode without failure.

Start your computer in Mode safe and follow the steps below:

To uninstall a service pack of Windows Vista, follow these methods in the order in which they are presented. First of all, try Method 1.

Method 1: Uninstall the service pack of Windows Vista by using the programs and features in Control Panel

To uninstall a service pack for Windows Vista, the easiest method is to use the programs and features in Control Panel. To uninstall the service pack of Windows Vista by using the programs and features in Control Panel, follow these steps:

Click Start, type Appwiz.cpl in the start search box, and then click Appwiz.cpl in the list programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.

    Click View installed updates.

Click the service pack that you want to uninstall, and then click on uninstall.

If this does not work, you can try this method:

    1. open an elevated command prompt window. To do this, click Start, type command in the box start the search, right-click CommandPrompt and then click Run as administrator.

    2. run the following command, depending on the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall:

For Windows Vista Service Pack 1:

    C:\temp\Windows6.0-kb936330-x86.exe x:C:\temp

Note This command assumes that the file Windows6. 0 - KB936330.exe folder is in the C:\Temp folder

For Windows Vista Service Pack 2:

    C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465-nnn.exe x:C:\temp

    In this command, NNN is x 86, x 64, or IA-64.

Note: This command assumes that the file Windows6. 0-KB948465 - X 86 .exe file is in the C:\Temp folder.

    3. He must create a sandbox environment before you can continue to step 4. This allows you to manage safely an untrusted program. To create a sandbox, sandbox type md.

    4. to remove the Windows Vista service pack, type or copy and paste the following command, depending on the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall:

For Windows Vista Service Pack 1

    start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.cab /up s:sandbox

For Windows Vista Service Pack 2

    start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465-NNN.cab /up s:sandbox.

    In this command, NNN is x 86, x 64, or IA-64.

    5. once Pkgmgr.exe completed, you are prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall.

If these steps successfully uninstall the service pack of Windows Vista, and this resolves the issue, you are finished. If these steps do not uninstall the service pack of Windows Vista, or if these steps uninstall the service pack but do not resolve your issue, you need to restore the system to a previous state.

Here is an article that will give you more information about the Remove Service Pack 2:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/948537

If that fails, then you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer, since Vista was preinstalled on your computer.

Support of the software manufacturer OEM or replacement system

In most cases, you should contact the manufacturer OEM (OEM) or the manufacturer of the system directly to replace Microsoft software that was distributed by your computer. However, an exception is made for operating system service pack media *, for which you can contact us directly.

Contact information for the manufacturer of the computer, see the Microsoft Web site at the following address:

They should do this for a small fee.

To reinstall Vista using their recovery disk/s, you start from the 1st recovery disk they provide and follow the manufacturer's instructions to reinstall:

The recovery process can be started by pressing a particular combination of the key or keys at startup. (Power on / start)

    Maybe it's F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc., depending on the manufacturer.

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

If this happens, you may need to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

  • Complete PC Vista restore error 0 x 80042407

Okay, I need to move my installation out of a set of raid 5 unstable material which consists of three discs of 500 GB of the same type, model and size.  This raid set is equivalent to a 1 terabyte of 931 GB disk after it is formatted.

I did a full backup pc of this volume on an external USB drive of 500 GB of a model and a different type.

I have a whole new, drive 1 terabyte of different model who I am trying to restore to.  After many failed attempts, I decided to start diskpart and create a partition, mark it active, quick format in ntfs and label it 'system driv' but still no love.  No matter what I do, I keep getting the following error:

"The complete PC Windows restore operation failed.
"Details of the error: disk is defined as active in the bios is too small to recover the original system drive."  Replace the by a larger drive and retry the restore operation.  (0 x 80042407) "there are now only three disks in this system - backup USB drive C drive, where I am trying to restore to and the D drive DVD."

The raid set and the new disk are formatted the same size - 931GB.  The size of the backup data is appx 400 GB 500 GB USB disk.  Why this will restore?  Simple is possible to have the restore disk is smaller than the backup disc of 3 k?  If this is the case, what happens if I have a server with a raid set and do disaster recovery from a single hard drive of the same size and it don't work.  Which makes it fundamentally new solution of Microsoft backup without value.  Should I now go out and buy a 1.5 terabyte drive crap just to make it work?  Sheeeeesh.  Each software backup image in the world has been able to return to a smaller drive for more than a decade.  What is the problem with the new backup?

The partition recovery on a computer is put in place by the manufacturer of the computer, and it is always better to consult before making any changes in there. I had a pc using Windows Vista and I served my Windows Mail e-mail program.  The computer has stopped working so I removed the hard drive, put it in a case and now use it as an external drive.  My new computer, I took possession of the Documents and Settings folder, and I'm looking for emails.  I followed the path, Documents and Settings / / AppData / Local / Microsoft / Windows Mail but there are 2 folders, backup & stationery as well as a few small files.  Where I could hide my email? Please, I beg you.

There should be a directory called local folders under the message store and eml files organized into folders named after the directories under this directory are.  They may be hidden files, so make sure that you have enabled the display of hidden files and folders under control panel | Folder options | View.  You can also try to search *.eml, because messages are stored as eml files.  See www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm for background.

  • Restore the backup files. Windows Vista Expert needed!

Help!  Recently, a virus wiped out my operating system (Windows Vista).  C drive my PC had literally nothing about it.  Then I got a new VISTA OS installed by a repair shop.  I tried to restore my previous configuration from the backup I had on an external drive, using the Vista Backup & Restore utility.  This "worked" except that he restored the backup files in a separate location on the C drive.  Using the windows Explorer I see all those files that have been restored in a folder named "Thom".

However the new Vista installation has the user name "Thomas" where a configuration complete, (Documents, Favorites, desktop, etc.), was created.  When I connect, it's the config I see (new office, new files and folders for this new user, 'Thomas'.  I want to use the configuration, (files, folders, office computer), under the former name "Thom", not this new one, "Thomas."

I'm afraid to just delete the files under Thomas I'm afraid I'm going to destroy my access to Windows in general.  Currently, I show only a user account in the control panel.  I don't have the 'Thom' user in the folder of the user within the new configuration.  How to delete files and folders under Thomas and use files and folders in the folder named Thom that is located on drive C?

All restoring the backup files are there, they show just a folder on drive C, titled "Thom".  When I connect to my pc it takes me to your desktop created by the new facility.  I need ALL the files in the backup (office, e-mail, files & folders), not the Setup program created by the installation of the new Vista.  I want to be able to connect to windows and have it use the backup files, which are located in this folder named "Thom" which show on the C drive.

Can I simply combine or merge or copy the files in the folder 'Thom', I want to use in the files of the same name, (contacts, documents, Favorites, desktop), which are under the name of "Thomas"?  Can I remove folders under the user 'Thomas' and all it's files and records and hope that windows then takes me in the files that I want to use?

I use my laptop, (HP Pavilion, 64-bit), for business and I'm dead in the water until I can access my old configuration.  I am on day 5 of this disaster and I am desperate, please help!

    Hello Reggie999,

Thanks for the return of the response.  You can move the files/folders in the 'Thom' folder in your new user account 'Thomas '.   Or another option would be to create a new user account and call it what you want, then move the folder in this user account.

If you create a new user account and move your files/folders to this account, it would be nice to delete the user account 'Thomas '.  Just make sure that you have all of the files in the profile that you have recently created/added.

  • My Windows Vista computer is corrupt and I'm in a vicious circle where everything I try to repair fails

I recently installed a selection of 'important' updates on Windows Update. initially they kept not so I installed them in safe mode. Since my computer is in an apparently irreversible cycle and all the solutions on the forums that I am trying to use to fix, it seems to fail. It resembles a virus but I ran Norton 360 in safe mode and it found nothing. I have removed all the updates installed on the roundabout but I always meet the same problems.

When I boot I get a message saying "Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and then click Retry, or click Cancel to exit sidebar. "I tried the clean boot fix, but it does not work. Also Norton 360 does not open, Windows Update is not as open, the event log does not work, System Restore has no restore points or can it create a new one, incident reports does not work. I tried to download "correction" using MS Fixit, but as soon as I get to the page and click on the download button I get the following message: "Internet Explorer could not open the Internet site. The site requested is either not available or cannot be found. "Please try again later" literally, it seems that every difficulty I try hit a dead-end. I tried to uninstall Norton360 and reinstall, but it won't let me do no more. I ran CHKDSK in command prompt and apparently there is nothing wrong with that. I tried to open Firefox, but it gives me a message telling me that Firefox is already running? It won't let me download Chrome or Safari either.

My guess is that this is a problem with Windows Update as the Fixit research said there was a problem with some Windows Update components, well again once I am unable to make a fix on those that it gives me the message "Internet Explorer could not open the Internet site.

Can someone please offer suggestions as to how I could escape from this cycle? I can not even save my files as my Nero BackitUp opens correctly or the other. Disaster! Also tried user account control solves, but these do not seem to work either. Help!

    Hello, Nick Ackerman,.

This behavior occurs in Mode safe?

If not, then let's start with a clean boot.

The following article describes this process: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Let us know if this can help, or if you have any questions.
