RAID controllers

Does anyone have a good link which explains the differences in Dell RAID controllers and accessories?

For example.  The same controller works in the 2950 Dell R710 like?  How are the different cables?  Are batteries and cache different?

In general try to understand what goes through one server to another in the Department to RAID Dell.

Thank you

The same controller works in the 2950 Dell R710 like?  How are the different cables?  Are batteries and cache different?

In general, the parts are designed to compliment the tech in the server, doesn't provide backward compatibility for older, less advanced hardware. The 2950 takes the PERC 5 / i, PERC 6 / i SAS 5/iR and SAS 6/IR. The R710 may take a PERC 6 / i and SAS 6/iR, but also uses the S300, H200 and H700 controllers.

PERC 5 and 6 PERC use a SFF-8484 connector; the PERC H200 and H700 use a connector SFF-8087.

Batteries must be the same, but the cache size and type are different (PERC 5/6 have 256 MB; H700 has 512 MB and 1 024 MB).

    Hello

Please refer to controller RAID LSI - HBA equivalence mapping | ServeTheHome and ServeThe.Biz Forums and search for a provider (DELL, IBM, etc.) marked controller LSI.

2108/2208 chipset based ones should work fine with VMWare 6. Be sure to get one with a saved stack cache (BBU) or a flash saved to get decent performance.

  • The computer case and RAID controllers

Read all the messages on this forum has really made me think about a lot of different changes to my machine now! So much information! One change, I'll probably do is changing case. My current case is a padded with foam, noises and it's super quiet which is great, but I have a problem with the heat, especially during the long makes etc.. I saw injury suggests a HAF 932 to someone and I looked and I like really the case, but I'm now at a controller from Areca RIAD to accelerate my raid storage, I called to be quite slow on the controller on board since I installed it.

My question is the form of HARD drive storage locations. I saw that it is suggested to get as many connector RAID controller you can swing, but I wonder how you guys with huge raids, 12, 16 or 24 drive configurations manage all these readers! The HAF 932 looks like there 5 or 6 bays 3.5 "and 5.25"... to max 5 or 6 racks so there's room for 12 disks if you convert each Bay 5.25 ". Are there external grids or something that you can wire in or how you guys are this manipulation?

It was way more long needed, but thanks for looking!

One of the most popular approaches is to use drive cages, like this: http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite/products_detail.php?sku=63

My case has 12 5.25 "machines slot, so the most I could fit 20 replaceable discs to 3.25" at least at the front. I still 3 bays more in the back, so in theory I could fit 23 discs, without going outside.

In my case, I currently only 17 3.25 "readers over 2 burners of BR, but with room for more than two disks.

It might look like this (not my own system):

I have a MD3200 (SAS) and the host running ESXi 5 U2. Is it possible to configure the VLAN tagging on the management ports of the MD3200 outside the standard IP gateway configuration and the subnet mask?

I don't see one either. Textbooks mention also the option to label the management ports.

Based on the absence of mention of this in the manual, I feel confident in saying that you can not use VLAN tagged on the management ports.

  • Pilots and controllers RAID performance issues.

    Hello world

I'll beging assuming that I am new to VMware.

I decided to build a server ESXi 4.1 autonomous based on map of Intel S5520HC.

    http://www.Intel.com/products/server/motherboards/s5520hc/s5520hc-overview.htm

I used 5 Seagate 1 TB SATA HDD 7200 RPM 32 MB cache connected to the MB controller. Of course ESX couldn't see the RAID so I used this:

    http://www.Intel.com/products/server/RAID-controllers/SROMBSASMR/SROMBSASMR-overview.htm

I connected the 4 hard drives in a RAID 10 conf and used this driver during installation so that this controller and R10 table to be found.

    http://Downloadcenter.Intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?AGR=Y & DwnldID = 18453 & ProdId = 3148 & lang = eng & OSVersion = A %0 & DownloadType = drivers

I installed ESX on the 5th disc and also affected the ability of reserve as a "scratch" data store I configured ESX to use this data as a swap for virtual machines store. I also added a datastore iSCSI on a homebuild storage based on Openfiler using similar disks (RAID 10 Setup). All net connections are gigabit Intel on the 3Com gigabit switches. We have therefore 3 data warehouses. 1 is on one disc, the 2nd is on hardware RAID10, 3rd is on iSCSI gigabit. Reading and writing of the 2nd data store performance has been disastrous. It was much lower than these other two stores of data. (reading or writing would not exceed 20000 Kbps as seen on the performance of vSphere client tab.

I decided to swap with the controller on that is supported natively by ESX, so I used RS2BL080 Intel

    http://www.Intel.com/products/server/RAID-controllers/RS2BL080/RS2BL080-overview.htm

so I used 4 same disks and RAID 10 configuration and performance was even worse.

I noticed that ESX used the same 1 controller driver since they are compatible. (megaraid sas)

I want to permanantly unload/remove this driver and let the ESX to use a native without reinstallation of course.

Any other suggestions to improve performance are welcome.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to the community,

It is not the driver, what questions it's the writing mode in which operates the RAID controller. RAID controllers usually work in write-through mode, unless they have a cache with battery attached backup module. With the cache with battery backup module, they are able to operate in mode of writeback who basically dope performance. ESX(I) entirely relies on the caching of the RAID controller and does not any software based in implementing caching for security reasons.

Generally, you will see rates of transfer between 5-20 MB/s in view write-through and > 80 MB / s in write-back mode.

I suggest that you follow the steps listed in the HP Document: "Z - series Workstation detection and fixing a hard drive failure within the RAID Controller utility" in the URL: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04474148#N10829 you can find instructions how to enter each State type of RAID (Intel RST, 2308 LSI and LSI 9260-8i controller - It's the main RAID controllers usually associated with the HP Z820 workstation according to the particular configuration you ordered). Note that in most of the cases described in this document, you need to access the configuration of RAID controller during computer startup steps, by pressing CTRL + I (for Intel RST) or CTRL + C (for LSI 2308) or CTRL + H (by LSI 9260-8i). The installation program uses the RAID controller firmware and does not require to install complex inside Windows software, because it is done outside of the Windows operating system before starting. Find more details in "HP Z220 SFF, CMT Z220, Z420, Z620 and Z820 workstations maintenance and Service Guide" in the URL: http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c04205252-1.pdf , in the devices of annex b: Setup RAID (pp. 161-171) all types of RAID controllers that are relevant at the workplace Z820 are discussed.

  • RAID configuration on a single hard drive?

    Hello

Is it possible to configure the RAID in a single hard drive.

The RAID is not just about redundancy. In the case of mirror RAID is. But, in the case of the RAID stripe, it's performance. There are other RAID types too if you feel like Googling them, but I can assure that they all involve at least two physical disks. However, many RAID controllers that support stripe and mirror (RAID 0 and 1).

You cannot create a RAID with a single physical disk, even if you create more than one partition on it.

  • RAID offers the best burst rate?

I recently install a new SATA III HARD disk, it is measured around 110 MB/s for the speed of the gusts, which is the highest speed (in megabytes per second) at which data can be transferred from disk interface (IDE or SCSI, for example) for the operating system.  I would like to improve the burst rate, someone has suggestions if RAID will be a good approach or not?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

    Hello

RAID0, RAID0 + 1 and RAID1 + 0 all can provide some increase in performance, however the level
is based on the discs and the methods used. Hardware RAID is likely to be the only one
really useful. Check with the manufacturer of readers and the supplier of the device RAID/methods you
you want to use as those are the only ones who will be able to provide the specifications of the real world.

Have you considered a SSD? Check with the leading manufacturers of SSD (use BING and Google).

    ========================================================================

RAID causes more problems than it solves. Especially for software RAID which is included
    on some motherboards.

    RAID<-- describes="" all="" types="" of="">
    http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

Today, there are 3 "General Types' RAID

Software, hybrid (some hardware with software checks) and material.

Personally, I think that the software and the hybrids are a waste of time and misleading when claims of
reliability are usually made. In most cases, an effective backup plan is better than these. All the
too often, software RAID or the hybrid model in fact causes a failure. Or is it supposed to
to protect the system crashes and power outages end up being the cause of them. Material
RAID is by far the best.

    Hardware RAID
    http://www.bestpricecomputers.co.UK/glossary/RAID-controller.htm

Hardware RAID is a physical hard disk controller that allows interactions of disk required
to perform a reliable redundant Bay.

    Intel RAID controllers
    http://www.Intel.com/products/server/RAID/index.htm

    Adaptec RAID controllers
    http://www.Adaptec.com/en-us/products/

Many low-cost software component snap-in RAID controllers are really a hybrid where a part of the action
is done by the hardware of the map and the rest (and often more important functions) are performed
by the processor in the system using software RAID.

  • Windows could not configure windows to run on this hardware on this computer. RAID problem?

I'm upgrading from XP to 7 ultimate.  Compatibility checker turned up no problem important and (custom) installation seems to be okay until the dreaded message above.

I have an older Pentium 4 3.2 (540J) processor on a card mother P5GD2.  After searching for a solution, it seems that a lot of the problems result from hard drive interface problems.  I'm 2 RAID 1 volumes through an Intel 82801FR SATA RAID controllers.  Windows seems to see the volumes very well during the installation process.  I select the first volume of the installation, and then continue until the message "cannot configure.

The fact that I can see volumes in the installer of Windows means that Windows has find and load the drivers for the RAID?  No idea how to resolve this situation?  Do you think the RAID/HDs are to blame, or is there another likely problem?

    Thank you!

  • Softward raid with vista 64?

I have vista ultimate 64 and would like to install raid 1 with two identical drives (not the boot disks).  Software raid is possible?

    Hello

Yes you can use software RAID (redundant array of independent Disk).
You can implement RAID at the hardware or software level. When implemented at the hardware level, seller of the equipment provides an interface to manage the tables and pilots to support different operating systems, with which you may have to work. Treatment for the RAID array is provided by a processor separate integrated in the RAID controller, offloading the CPU of the computer work. In addition, many RAID controllers often include a large dedicated RAM cache with battery backup. The combination of a separate CPU and a separate cache provides a substantial advantage over software RAID. Hardware RAID is usually significantly more expensive than software RAID built into Windows, but many manufacturers now include features basic on the motherboard hardware RAID.
Vista includes an excellent and flexible RAID levels 0, 1, and 5 application in the software. It covers the possibilities by any means, but it's certainly enough for some purposes.

Primary GUI (graphic interface) for the management of the disks under Windows is the disk management console.
Although disk management provides a solution suitable software RAID, hardware RAID is widely available, either the original seller of Windows or third parties, and it offers substantial advantages over software RAID. Hardware RAID solutions range from a simple RAID controller, integrated to the motherboard and fully integrated and autonomous subsystems. Features and costs vary, but all say they provide superior performance and reliability on a simple software RAID solution such as the one included in Windows.

  • SSD compatibility w/PERC S300 RAID?

We have an old PE T110 first generation with a PERC S300 RAID controller and 4x250GB drives. However, because the controller is older, there isn't much documentation about SSD compatibility. Does anyone at - he had success the upgrade of any server/workstation using a PERC S300 with an SSD of any kind in a RAID 10 configuration?

Finally, I don't remember what type of connector is on the existing disks and am a little confused about the difference between SATA and SAS. What normally comes stock with this system and which would need if I moved to SSD? New cables? Anything else I need to know?

    htc2010
is it not reasonable to assume I could just as easily swap on each drive in the Bay, one at a time, with a SSD?

You cannot mix SAS and SATA drives in the same array. Also, you cannot mix HDD and SSD. If SSD does not support the S300, then he cannot know the difference between a SATA SSD and a SATA HDD, so it can work, but 1) I wouldn't rely on it and 2) just know that real RAID controllers, it can be done.

In the end, I don't know if she will achieve your goals. The reason why I asked is because you could just add the SSD as a new VD, then move the files of database, etc. on to improve the speed, but it sounds like a lot of work for little return. I just invest in a backup recovery solution, good. If it can work in a virtual environment?

  • RAID works using MD1200 r.620 and 6 GB/s SAS HBA?

We have a r.620 with Dell SAS HBA already in which is attached to a tape of 124 t library.

Just got a MD1200 and I plugged in the other port on the SAS HBA.  I can see the drives in Windows Disk Manager.  I can also see Open Manage, but there is no option to use RAID functions or create virtual discs.  Should there be?

In fact, OpenManage said "Connector 0 (no RAID)" with regard to the SAS 6 GB/s HBA.   I searched online for drivers for this card that allow RAID and can not find.  Am, I watered?   How the RAID to work on the MD1200?

    Hello wardog25,

For the MD1200 you use a PERC card because it will allow that you create a raid array. The SAS 6hba that is used for your 124 t isn't a raid card, so you will not be able to create a raid on this map. For a MD1200, we recommend that you use a PERC H800. Here is a link to the Guide of interoperability for the MD1200 & if you look at page 2, it lists the supported raid controllers. FTP://FTP.Dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/PowerVault-md1200_Reference%20Guide_en-us.PDF

Here is a link to buy a PERC H800 if you need.

  • PowerVault NX3200 (new) change from RAID 5 to RAID 6

I have a new NX3200 of PowerVault Dell, who arrived in a couple of weeks.  I ordered it with RAID 5 (12 X 4 TB SAS).  In the coming weeks, my new Rack must be wired to the top so that I can turn on the PowerVault NX3200 for the first time.

Question: I decided that I'd rather have RAID 6 instead of RAID 5 so that I can tolerate two 2 failures of disk rather than just a 1 drive failure.  It is easy to make this change?  I saw several YouTube videos that go through several examples of removal of the RAID arrays and creating a new RAID with Dell's PERC RAID arrays.

Note: The slight decrease in the storage space that results will of RAID5 RAID6 is unimportant as I still have a lot of storage space for my needs.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello the Kid7,

You can change the raid level of 5 to 6 on the NX3200 & it's pretty easy to do. Here is a link to the user guide of the PERC card that is in the system.
