VMotion between 2 Hosts with different processors

Hallo,

I have a server in my homelab I use for studies of VMsphere and I want to get a second machine to test advanced features such as HA, Vmotion etc.

My first server has a map of X9SCM-9 with processor Xeon E3-1230V2 (Ivy Bridge). I am currently running ESX 5.0 U2 on it.

I was counting on obtaining of material quality for the second host consumers because I don't want to spend a lot on it, so I thought that I need any CPU generation Ivy Bridge.

I tested today with a second machine with a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge, but when I try to Vmotion he says "the virtual machine requires physical features that are not available or disabled on the host... ».

So I figure there must be a difference in architecture regardless of the CPU beeing an Ivy Bridge CPU.

When I try to activate CVS it just me are going to the 'Nehalem' Version so my virtual machines running on host 1 would not be able to use all the features of the CPU since the Xeon.

So the question boils down to: what is the processor less which offer compatibility VCA L5?

Or is there something else to consider in VMotion between two hosts with different processors?

I got a shared storage, etc. of the same network configuration.

Thank you

Benjamin

Hi Benjamin,

For compatibility VCA L5 want to look at one of the following models, Intel CPU:

  • Ivy Bridge: Series E3-1200-v2
  • HASWELL

I would recommend mental health that before rushing and a CPU purchase, check if a cheaper option would be, as Jon mentions in suppresss some fo the CPU compatibility checks so obviously, this is not desirable in a production environment, and must be applied in your study of VMware Lab to the home address.

Hope this helps,

Simon

  • Having a problem with vmotion between two hosts with processors Intel E5640

    Hi all.

    We organize a group of 14 guests, each with ESX 4.0, build 261974 installed.

    They are managed through vCenter 4.0.0 and construction 258672, vSphere client 4.0.0 builf 258672.

    The hosts are blades from IBM, in a BladecenterH.

    Some of the blades are older model HS21 (type 7995) with processors Intel Xeon E5440.

    The rest of the blades are more recent model HS22V (type 7871) with processors Intel Xeon E5640.

    We are currently replacing old HS21 blades with more the HS22 blades, so we just bought 7 HS22s, all with the same Intel E5640 processors located in the blades currently in service. One of the things that this transition will happen for us is allowing us to have the same processor type in all of our blades and remove vMotion compatibility problems we had in the past. We were unable to turn on CVS, because we would have had to shut down a cluster of virtual machines on the latest hosts and could not take this kind of failure. We will turn VCA after that.

    Here's the question:

    We just installed the first new knives, and when turn on us and try to vMotion VMs to it, it fails. He gives us the error standard vMotion on CPU register incompatibilities, and that we should read kb1993. The thing is, they all have the same processor. Same identifier type, same everything, yet for some reason vCenter is convinced they are incompatible. We checked things in BIOS, and they are all the same.

    We are ideas, other than the new knives have a later rev BIOS than the old ones.

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you!

    I encountered the same problem and the only solution I've found so far is to start the master on both hosts. When he started on the two hosts, the message no longer appears when moving the virtual machine back to a host with a different model of CPU. I have two clusters currently, so I have not tested vMotioning fast machine between hosts with different CPU while it is running. When I had the chance to test, I'll post my results.

  • VMotion vm between 2 hosts with switch std and vds

    Nice day.

    I had 2 hosts (5.5 and 5.0) uinder signle vCenter and I need to move all the VMs from the second one (5.0) to the first (5.5). ESXi 5.5 is the distributed vswitch so I decided to remove the single vmnic of vds and add it to the standard switch. This host has 4 vmk interfaces now - 3 in the vds (simple management (10.12.0.41) and 2 for vmotion, but now the flag "use it for vmotion" is disabled) and only vmk (vmk3) in standard vswitch. vmk3 is falgged for vmotion only, its address is 10.12.0.100. Host 5.0 is located in another network, single vmk0 (192.168.107.94) and it is marked for traffic management and vmotion. OK, now, I put the correct rules on my router but vmotion ifaces cannot see the other cause of on ESXi 5.5 routing table:

    by default 0.0.0.0 10.12.0.1 vmk0 MANUAL

    10.12.0.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 vmk0 MANUAL

    10.30.1.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 vmk1 MANUAL

    and if I add route adds via vmk0, so vmk3 on ESXi 5.5 is not always on the road. Of more if I have "show the routing table" of the vmk in the vSphere client - I got an empty list. How can I add a route for vmkernel specific interface?

    P.S. Add what esxi 5.0 service VDS is no option for me.

    Wow, I guess my problem is solved. Tbh it was not a problem at all. I knew that you can not migrate vm group of standard port of a host to group ports distributed from another host, BUT it seems that I can use vmotion vmkernel interface that is in the Group of ports on a vmk host and vmotion to the Group of standard on another host port, so I just deleted the vmk3 and set vmk0 to be used also for vmotion traffic.

  • CAN I VMotion between ESX server with they are in different version?

    Hi all

    I want to upgrade my 2.5u1 to 2.5u3 vCenter, then upgrade my all the ESX Servers 3.5u1 to 3.5u3. VMFS on storage shared SAN and VMotion already activated. My question is if I upgrade the first server ESX 3.5u1 to 3.5u3, can I use VMotion to migrade the 3.5u1 virtual machine remains in the new 3.5u3 updated? Thank you!

    PS. I had been looking, but too many results or not exactly my scenario. So hard to find one suitable.

    Yes and you can even go to 3.0.2 3.5.3 without a problem. Usually, it is the target CPU model that causes pain when he is not the same.

  • VMotion between several hosts

    I have just joined a company that executes 2 guests on ESXi 4.1 Standard, and both hosts have 1 CPU.

    I have get a business license for the two hosts to allow storage vmotion, but would welcome that bumping the hosts up to 2xCPUs (with additional CPU licenses).

    If finance means that I can't upgrade the two hosts, for example, if you had 1xCPU and the other 2, vmotion would fail? If so, will create a VCA basic iron out this problem?

    Thank you

    Hello..

    vMoton should work just fine for a long time the CPU being identical acrosse the two hosts and ofc with good installed licenses.

    It doesn't matter if a host has only one and another two physical processors. (Ive got a mixed cluster here with some guests with 2xCPUs and some CPU 4 x)

    VCA troubleshoots only presenting sets of features identical CPU on all hosts as long they are in the same family... See more details here: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003212

  • Can I use Lightroom CC between two Macs with different versions of the operating system

    I have the CC for photographers. I keep my work to Dropbox LR catalog and access them from my MacBook Air laptop or my desktop iMac computer. Currently, two computers are running the same version of Mac OS. I think to upgrade the laptop for the new OS of Sierra, but because the office is older, I thought maybe not upgrade (it is near the minimum end of systems that can run Sierra). Can someone tell me if there is a conflict with the help of the LR catalog between two computers if they are not both running the same version of Mac OS. When the catalog is saved in the operating system that you are starting, it would still be compatible for use on the computer with the previous version of Mac OS? Thank you! Barbara

    If the machines use the same version of the software, then the files should be feasible in both machines.

  • File sharing between two computers with DIFFERENT Versions of Windows (XP & Vista)

    I just bought a WRT54G4 Wireless-G router broadbad & am a n00bie to this any thng in network. I like the current state of things now, all considering that both my desktop PC (Windows XP Home Edition) & my laptop wireless PC (Windows Vista Home Premium) are online (local & Internet) BUT I can't seem to get things while my desktop PC sharing files which can then be read and otherwise accessible by the laptop.

    Here's what I'm trying to...

    * Have BOTH computers access the Internet via a private network (which I already managed to do)

    * Having the Office to share files that are accessible (wireless or not) from my laptop

    Essentially, I want to be able to use the TWO HDs according to needs.

    My office is an old computer AMD Duron 1 Ghz. with 512 MB RAM & can handle a FEW small spots, but the big gun is my laptop (A 1.86 Ghz. Intel Pentium with 3 GB of RAM). Because of his speed & memory, I would like to have the laptop handle larger & more intensive tasks.

    Although my laptop has a smaller hard drive compared to my office (A 136 GB HD in the office (200 GB) compared to a 141 GB (I guess this HD is around this size, but since it came pre-installed, & I am currently leasing to buy, I don't know), I would like to be able to use if possible of the TWO HDs.) All I need is for both computers see the two HDs & all the files on it.

    I tried implementing the sharing of files, as shown elsewhere on the Linksys site, but he lost when I rebooted both my computers, since that's what the page told me to do (I followed Windows XP as the Office has all the files that I want to share & Windows XP is the operating system of the desktop). Should I have not done this?

    In addition, my ultimate goal is to GET RID of the big bulky monitor I connected to the back end of my desktop PC & all simply use the laptop instead, because it does not take a lot of desktop space. Y at - it an emulator "Virtual monitor" or software of some sort that I can download (for FREE please ) that will allow me to see the jobs of all the computers on my network, just as if I

    had REAL monitors? If so, where could I find one?

    In short, together, I have accomplished a lot lately since I bought the router & linked computers, as you can see, I still need help & I've got some learning to do.

    Any help I can get would be MOST appreciated.

  • vMotion between different processors

    On my last job, I had two clusters vmware, using four hosts with HP DL580 servers and the other with two hosts in a HP BLADE system, I don't remember the model.

    So when I tried to move an active VM for clusters to each other, I got an error, so I'm looking here on community and I got the awnser is the reason the hosts had different processors and I can only move this virtual machine, if they are closed. If I can only move cold VM between my cluster.

    OK im on a new company name and they had M$ Hyper-V and now we are migrating to VMWARE (cool ) we have two DELL Poweredge servers, one with two Quad-Core Xeon X 5470 and the other with two Xeon Quad - Core E5320.

    So I guess I'm having a problem of fact a vmotion hot between it because the servers have different processors.

    So im buying new processors, but I find only Xeon Quad-Core X 5365, I think that it corresponds to that of the X 5470 but with cache and diferrent clock.

    My ask is, can I do a hot Vmotion with some VM of a Xeon X 5470 server on a Xeon X 5365 server.

    Stability of Slackware, safety and simplicity are the best choice!

    Yes,

    the vmotion VMs between different generations of cpu is only posible to put these hosts using Enhanced VMotion (CVS).

    Improved compatibility for VMotion (EVC) simplifies VMotion compatibility issues

    through the generations of CPU. EVC automatically configures the server with Intel CPU

    FlexMigration or AMD - V extended Migration technologies

    compatible with the old servers. After EVC is enabled for a cluster in the

    VirtualCenter inventory, all hosts in this cluster are configured to

    present identical CPU features and compatibility for VMotion CPU. The

    features introduced by each host are determined by selecting a predefined EVC

    base line. VirtualCenter does not allow the addition of hosts that cannot be

    automatically configured to be compatible with EVC baseline.

    To use CVS, you must run ESX Server 3.5 Update 2 or

    highest with Virtual Center 2.5 Update 2 or higher and have only compatible CPUs

    are listed in one of the following tables.

    CVS does not allow for migration with VMotion between Intel and AMD processors.*

    VCA makes it much

    easier to add servers with the new generation of processors in existing clusters

    containing a material more former generation. Entering an EVC cluster servers are

    automatically configured to be compatible with the hosts already in the

    clusters. Since this process is automatic, EVC is very simple to use and

    requires no expertise on CPU features and masks.

  • VMotion between 2 remote hosts on the same site

    Hey everybody. I am new to a company that owns 2 Server vCenter, one in each data center, and we have a few servers standa-only (no not a cluster) in some places.

    All hosts are registered with several Enterprise. Let me draw the locations, you will have an idea:

    VCenter1

    -Datacenter1 (remote domain controller 01)

    * Host1

    ...

    * Host15

    2 VCenter

    -Datacenter2 (remote domain controller 01)

    * Host16

    ...

    * Host30

    -Data Center 3 (LAN)

    * HostLocal1

    * HostLocal2

    That make sense, as I have 15 guests on data center 1 and 2. We use 2 VCenter to manage the HostLocal1 and HostLocal2, but we don't group them together and we do not have vMotion among them, because all vMotion traffic must go to vCenter, then on the second host, is this right? Is there a way to prevent this?

    Let me rephrase: VMotion traffic would be like this:

    HostLocal1-> VCenter 2-> HostLocal2

    Or:

    HostLocal1-> HostLocal2.

    Wrote this question down make realize me that my hypothesis is incorrect, vMotion traffic has nothing to do with VCenter, activities stems from these 2 servers. Can anyone confirm?

    Thank you very much for your time.

    HostLocal1--> VCenter 2---> HostLocal2

    Or:

    HostLocal1--> HostLocal2.

    vMotion traffic runs only between the source and the destination host ESX (i). The assumption that the traffic flows via vCenter's vMotion is downright bad. vCenter is simply required to initiate/control the vMotion between the hosts, but it is completely left out the data transferred between the host to move the virtual machine.

    The assumption that you need a cluster for vMotion object or clustering automatically implies vMotion won't as well.

  • Cluster with different host - resource pools hardware?

    Hello

    We have currently three generations of servers at base of AMD in our environment - with different CPU clock speeds.

    Guests are split into three groups and VMs are grouped based on clock speed.

    But frankly, it's a mess to administer.

    We envisage the creation of a single cluster and using pools of resources.

    But CPU resource pools take host speed of the CPU in return?

    - Or they just sure that VMs receive their share of CPU temps on loan-time partial?

    Best regards

    Martin

    Pools of resources sharing works only when there is some conflict of resources.

    -VMs in 'high' will appear on hosts with fast processors? - and get the most MHz?

    The actions are only priority... Then no.

    With a reservation... it depends on how much MHz offers...

    - Or they simply receive a high share of CPU time on a random host?

    By shars Yes...

    But remember the first sentence!

    If you have enough of free resources, all virtual machines are also (for actions).
