VMS + Vmotion
Hello
I have a few virtual machines I want their always stay together, what I need to pool resource user or paralytic?
If the vmation start I want to that they move together
TI is possible?
Thanks for your response
Hello
You can create the rule of affinity for the DRS cluster, select the virtual machine that you want to keep together. The autostart vMotion system will together pass all servers.

No network connection between the virtual machines on different hosts ESXi
I have several 5.0 ESXi hosts in a cluster managed by vCenter Server 5 and I have network problems:
- [Host A] running a virtual machine can ping any other computer virtual running on the [host A] great!
- A virtual machine running on host [B] can ping any other virtual machine running on [B] home - very well!
- [host A] (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running on [B] home - even better!
- [B] home (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running [host A] - beautiful set!
- A virtual machine running [host A] can not ping any virtual computer running on host [B] and vice versa - bad, very bad!
So basically the problem is that the virtual machines can communicate on hosts. It is a major problem that I need to fix, for obvious reasons.
Networking on all hosts is configured exactly the same way: a unique and standard vSwitch with a pair of gigabit network cards grouped, vmkernels configured for the vMotion, NFS and network management and a group of ports configured for the VIRTUAL local area network used by the VMs. (vMotion works fine on hosts, storage vMotion works very well too.) All virtual machines are servers Windows (2003 and 2008).
Reason #3 and #4 above, my assumption is that #5 must be the result of an ESXi/vCenter configuration issue and not a problem with the switches of material upstream. Is this a reasonable assumption?
Whatever it is, can anyone offer suggestions on how can I fix? It is quite annoying as I'm pretty sure that these hosts are configured in the same manner as those of our production cluster, which does not at all these problems!
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.
To be honest, it looks like a problem with your physical network-
How is the physical network configured - are NIC connects it to the same physical switches? Are the virtual machines on the same subnet? If this is not the case, they are able to ping the gateway sbnet? Can you piing host IP address from the virtual machines?
I also moved it to a forum more approiate.

Hi guys
I got a new server and I need to install and add to my existing cluster, the processor being different: 51xx and 53xx I discovered that I need to activate CVS by reading documentation said EVC
+If I up the EVC mode, virtual machines will be able to access the new features available in this mode?
Is that you turn off and then turn on the virtual machines. A
restarting the guest operating system is not enough. A virtual
machine determines what features are available to turn on, and
Cannot access all of the new features that are added until it is turned off. +
OK, got it
but I found this on the web
which basically says to create a cluster of TEMP and move virtual machines to cluster is empty my questions is
It really worked?
in this case, if it really works that I use my idea
Create a new Cluster I activate CVS and I just disconnect - delete - and add my old host vsphere to the new Cluster (active VCA) and finally add my new hosts 53xx?
or any other idea to avoid having my production environment down?
Thank you very much
Difficulty understanding what you mean, but if your point is that you need no downtime, ehre you will:
(1) create new cluster fetid with EVC
(2) put the OLD cluster 1 host (host A) in maint. mode (all VMs vmotion, remember who they are)
(3) move A host to new cluster
(4) Vmotion VMs that were on the host a return on host A (Yes it is possible through clusters)
(5) repeat 2 through 4 for each host in the old cluster.

VMotion VMs to their respective resources to batch list
When I'm not able to enter in maintenance on an esxi Server mode, I eventually duty vmotion each vm one by one to another host or choose those that belong to the same pool of resources and travel in a group.
How can I do this for all virtual machines at the same time and pass them their pool of respective resources on another host?
Don't know if that's exactly what you are looking for, but it would be to move all the VMS esxi

People,
Can you vmotion a VM with RDM LUN inside from one node to another in a cluster on the fly?
Also, I would like to know if I put the ESXi in maintenance mode, all virtual machines including those with RDM connected gets vmotioned to other nodes in the cluster automatically
Rahul-
Hi Rahul
It is stated in the Documentation that you can use with VM with RDM vSphere vMotion.
Documentation Center of vSphere 5.5 - on Raw Device Mapping
With RDM, you can:
- Use vMotion to migrate virtual machines using raw LUNS.
If you use vMotion to migrate the virtual machines with RDM, be sure to maintain Consistent ID LUN for RDM on all participating ESXi hosts.
Considerations of RDM & limits are listed here: Library of vSphere 5.5-RDM considerations and Limitations

Storage Vmotion causing of the VMs to freeze
Hello
I've set up a group of data store (ESXi 5.0 build 474610) with 8 warehouses of data, these data warehouses are supplied thin NetApp LUN most VMs in these clusters are supplied thin too.
Everytime SDRS migrates virtual machines with disks in this datastore freezes. Everyone knows about this problem? I am suspect that it has something to do with thin disks supplied... but I don't really know.
I appreciate any help or ideas.
bruno_,
We had the same type of questions. It seems to start when we introduce ESXi 5, at the time we were on Ontap 7.3.1 and would have minor problems, NetApp came back saying it's a questions of misalign. We have been aligning VM as well re-architecture of storage in the process that we have upgrade to Data ONTAP 8.0.2 and told to stay away from p4, so we went to p6. Once updated the problem got worse, when you a svMotion this would all our datastore to seize up. This has happened for two months. Without the help of VMware and NetApp support, we believe we have found and fix the problem. Just tested last night and no problem... It is related to VAAI Thin Provisioning block space reclamation (UNMAP) (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2007427) the December Patch (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=2007671&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=291448073&stateId=1%200%20291446210) This disables by default now.

Hi, I have a question.
Let's say I have two servers ESX 4.0 on one site. The first server is fully loaded with test vm that are always up and running, the other ESX Server has production vm only and is also fully charged.
Now, it would be possible when the production server fails, vmotion machines to test ESX server and automaticly the test vm stop in order to create a sufficient capacity for production vm? Or is it only possible with a charge of 50% / 50% on each server?
Thanks in advance!
Yes in this case DRS will be very good for you.

Storage vmotion the VMS residing on a store of data to another data store
I need Storage vmotion all virtual machines residing on a data store to another store of data within the same cluster. All virtual computers have a vmdk... someone has a script or something similar...
Also, you should be able to:
Get-Datastore "OldDatastore" | Get-VM | Foreach { Move-VM -Datastore (Get-Datastore "NewDatastore") }
If you found this information useful, please consider the allocation of points for correct or helpful.

I can storage vMotion two popular VMS with shared disks?
I have an ESX 3.0.2 Server with local storage and two ESX 3.5 with fiber channel SAN servers. Two VM sharing disks and run it on the computer with only the local storage. Can I use storage vMotion to move these to a 3.5 servers and more at the SAN?
If not; can I migrate the servers (when closed) to the SAN and 3.5 servers without breaking the links on shared disks?
If you close the virtual machines and migrate them, you should be able to access the disks - as the sVmotion update pointers in the vmx file.
If you upsize and lose access to the disk, you will need to do is open the.vmx file for each virtual computer and update the path specified for each disc, not too hard to fix at all. -If you don't like that, you can simply remove and re-add the disc in the VM properties

vCenter operations still shows vmotioned s VMS on host origin
Hi all
After that the migration of computers from one host to a different vCenter operations still shows these s VM on their original hosts. How can I get vCenter operations to pick up this change?
Thanks in advance.
Rob Cawood
Hi Rob,
We have seen cases in the past where operations vCenter inventory may be out of synchronization with the server vCenter for a period of time inventory. Both should get back in sync in an hour. If a time is too long a restart delay, as you discovered, gets the two back in sync.
Thank you!

Storage vMotion with Syncrep on Equallogic San
Hello
We recently bought 2 San Equallogic (PS6510ES) and turned on synchronous replication between them.
We use ESXi 5.5 and followed the best practices guide to disable TCP ack and 60 logintimeout value.
Everything seems to work fine until we tried Storage vMotion/migration and cloning VMS on the San.
When we did the migration of 2 volumes on the EQL SAN storage (the target volume has active syncrep), the target volume will be out-of-sync and then the storage vMotion will hang sometimes.
The worst is when such a problem has occurred, all other volumes on the EQL constantly to respond also. All volumes will not respond until we rebooted the corresponding ESXi host (NOTE: simple shut down/power outside the host won't help.) The San EQL will only return to normal after a reboot of the ESXi host).
If we pause / off the syncrep before Storage vMotion, the problem will not happen.
Is this normal or not?
In addition, whenever the problem occurred, the latency of writing the corresponding volume will be dry and we will receive alerts similar to the following:
connection iSCSI target ' xx.xx.xx.xx:3260, iqn.2001 - 05.com.equallogic:xxxxx - test-volume ' initiator 'xx.xx.xx.xx:xxxxx, eqlinitiatorsyncrep' failed for the following reason:
Initiator, disconnected from the target when connecting.
Thanks in advance.

1000V VSM lossing contact VEM after vMotion
Hello
We have installed 1000v VSMs as virtual machines on a Server Blade HP virtual connect modules.
This worked well and we migrated most of the VMS to 1000v. Same HA between the primary and backup VSMs worked.
Now, we see that if you live migrate the active MSM is loses all contact with the MEC, but backup VSM is supported unless you turn off an asset, the same thing happens when clients trend Deep Security Manager did some update to the VSM VM.
We have the 1000v deployed in L3 mode with the help of control interface and the MEC have their own vmkernel IP address, which in this case is on the same IP subnet as the VSM control interface.
We control 1000v VSM interface and management interface configured as a system of VLAN
1000V version 1,0000 sv2 (2.1) on VMware 5.1
Any ideas? This kind of thing is usually a number system VLAN.

Yes, the problem is that any port-profile with "l3control of ability" is supposed to only works with the vmk interfaces.
You want to put a VM interface on port-profile with l3control. We used to allow this, but for some reason any, he was shot.
Create another port-profile just for control 0 and see if that fixes the problem. Yet once make identical except for the "l3control ability.
Your version is good. I'll have to play in my lab. I'm kind of confused why your VSM2 gets blocked while quick loading when you vmotion VSM1. That shouldn't happen now.

question of vMotion and storage vMotion
I have everything set, UCS 5108, ESXi host, VMs, I don't have a SAN connection yet... My question is if I can enable vMotion? Let's say I have a cluster in vCenter, within this group, I have attached two ESXi host, win2008 VM in an ESXi and running, I can migrate (using vMotion) as win2008 VM to an another ESXi without connection SAN?
How storage vMotion to an ESXi host hardrive to an another ESXi host hardrive? Is this possible?
Note: I have not connection SAN in this configuration
One of the requirements for vMotion is shared storage that would allow visibility between source and destination ESXi hosts. (SAN, iSCSI or NFS).

You can use OpenFiler as an iSCSI for lab tests SAN

VMotion vm between 2 hosts with switch std and vds
Nice day.
I had 2 hosts (5.5 and 5.0) uinder signle vCenter and I need to move all the VMs from the second one (5.0) to the first (5.5). ESXi 5.5 is the distributed vswitch so I decided to remove the single vmnic of vds and add it to the standard switch. This host has 4 vmk interfaces now - 3 in the vds (simple management (10.12.0.41) and 2 for vmotion, but now the flag "use it for vmotion" is disabled) and only vmk (vmk3) in standard vswitch. vmk3 is falgged for vmotion only, its address is 10.12.0.100. Host 5.0 is located in another network, single vmk0 (192.168.107.94) and it is marked for traffic management and vmotion. OK, now, I put the correct rules on my router but vmotion ifaces cannot see the other cause of on ESXi 5.5 routing table:
by default 0.0.0.0 10.12.0.1 vmk0 MANUAL
10.12.0.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 vmk0 MANUAL
10.30.1.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 vmk1 MANUAL
and if I add route adds via vmk0, so vmk3 on ESXi 5.5 is not always on the road. Of more if I have "show the routing table" of the vmk in the vSphere client - I got an empty list. How can I add a route for vmkernel specific interface?
P.S. Add what esxi 5.0 service VDS is no option for me.
Wow, I guess my problem is solved. Tbh it was not a problem at all. I knew that you can not migrate vm group of standard port of a host to group ports distributed from another host, BUT it seems that I can use vmotion vmkernel interface that is in the Group of ports on a vmk host and vmotion to the Group of standard on another host port, so I just deleted the vmk3 and set vmk0 to be used also for vmotion traffic.
