• VMWare snapshot problem

  I recently upgraded a server, but before that, I took a snapshot of vmware. I waited a few days to make sure that the server has been run correctly after the upgrade. Appearantly, the snapshot has filled the VM disk. I was unable to start. I deleted the snapshot, but who did not free disk space (at least not yet and it has been more than an hour). I could so he can start by reducing the amount of RAM by using the virtual machine was, but I REALLY need the free disk space. How can I get this free disk space faster. Is there something I can manually remove? Thanks for any advice.

• VMware HA problem with isolated host.

  Hello, we have two IBM x 3850 M2 running ESX 3.5 U4 (153875).  Both are attached via NAS (NFS) to an IBM N3600 (Netapp FAS2050C).  Each server has two NETWORK adapter configured on their system console vSwitches (team) and there is an additional private network running for the storage and vMotion (with two NIC of each).

  We have DRS and HA enabled for our cluster with two nodes with the following parameters of HA:

  • Host allowed failures: 1

  • Enable the VMs to be powered even if they violate constraints of availability

  • VM restart priority: medium

  • The host Isolation response: stop the virtual machine

  • Enable VM monitoring (high)

  If I pull the power on one of the hosts, virtual machines are automatically provisioned on the host survivor as expected.  However, if I simulate double NIC failure on one of the hosts by unplugging both the System Console env, we lack in the following behavior:

  1. On the host that has been isolated (prodsys-vm1), the logs indicate that the server has detected it is isolated and begins to shut down its virtual machine.

  2. The host of survivor (prodsys-vm2) notes that prodsys-vm1 disappeared.

  3. prodsys-vm2 saves the VM "isolated" and tries to turn on.  The following error message is observed for each VM has failed:

  1. prodsys-vm2 then unregisters each virtual computer.

  2. Wait several minutes, but no other attempts are made to register and/or marketing the virtual machine failed.

  3. Now, if I register manually an of from the prodsys-vm2 failed VM console, it is immediately and without further interaction with me under tension.  In addition, this seems to trigger the re-registration of VM chess which is then subsequently automatically switched on without error.

  The obvious conclusion here is that prodsys-vm2 does not prodsys-vm1 enough time to stop the virtual machine before trying to restart.  I imagine that this could potentially be adjusted by getting the das.failuredetectiontime (I see a recommendation of the 1960s).

  A few questions though:

  • Why don't prodsys-vm2 try again to register and start the virtual machine failed after the first attempt?

  • Why when I joined one manually it suddenly decided to register and start up of the rest on its own?

  • Is it possible to keep my time failuredetection low (for faster recovery) and still be able to avoid this situation?  I could see a situation where maybe even 60s would be high enough.  It seems that this should be handled with more elegance that just get a time-out value...

  Of course, there are some fixes that might apply to our facilities and those who can give a try.  Will also lift it in support, but hoping someone out there might have some ideas.

  VMware High Availability (HA)

  Virtual Machines using a NFS data store could fail after an HA failover event

  When you have the overcommitment of memory with virtual machines on a NFS datastore, it creates a vswp file, which is a size swap file non-zero. In this scenario if HA failover events occur and the AP are defined on THAT VM leave power on, you may have a failure of virtual machine on the host where the virtual machine was originally executed before the HA event.

  If you don't have an overcommitment of memory with virtual machines on a datastore NFS, so HA failover events occur with the parameter THAT VM leave it turned on, in addition to the migration of the virtual machine running on the original host may fail.

  Solution: Apply Patch ESX350-200905401-BG to ESX Server 3.5 and hosts Patch ESXe350-200905401-I-BG of ESX Server 3i version 3.5 host computers.

  I've been using VMware workstation for a while but recently switched to VMware player 3.0, (largely because of the irritating instllation problems for Workstation 6.5.3 under Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64).

  With my computer, I use the vmrun command close all my virtual machines.

  Despite downloading the latest version of Vmware-vix (1.8.1), vmrun suspend & lt; path to the vmx file & gt; generates this error message:

  My reading of the documentation seemed to suggest that vmrun must work with the player as a workstation. Please could someone help me understand what ' I'm missing here?

  The problem is that the Server Client cannot connect to the internal private network or even ping the gateway, only the public IP and the Internet work. The host has no problem, it connects fine to the gateways both Public and private.

  Let as host only vmnet1 and vmnet8 as NAT. If vmnet0 is for one of the phyical NIC you want to fill then set VMnet2 to the bridge to the other physical NETWORK adapter so that you can configure your virtual machine to use vmnet0 or vmnet2 according to NIC's to the private LAN.

  Also check that the VMware bypass Protocol is bound to the physical NICs that you want to be filled.

  After the upgrade to Fusion 5 I get this message when you start Windows XP:

• Adding datastore in VMware with dell perc5.i after enabling vt - d

  Dear community of VMware,

  I have a problem with my v5 sphere adding datastore in VMware, the problem comes when I put the vt - d on enable. I have my store of data on raid 5 with a dell perc5.i. When I enable this feature my data store went from raid controller. Another point, when I do a new raid with en disks try to add it, I noticed that when it is being initialized, I can add the store of data without any problem. But after that is done initializing it went again.

  Now maybe you think why put vt - d j my setup is that I want to make my virtual nas/san inside vmware with freebsd, and I need to get through to my tape drive, connect to my backup server.

  No he tenido el problema specific al than haces referencia, but this can be a problem of authentication. Demon of Backup Exec corre El simple una cuenta (that is con los servicios en). ESA cuenta are usually una cuenta valida in todo el dominio.

• Two network adapters physical separate networks

  Is it possible to implement two physical on a host running VMware Workstation Desktop cards, in a way where your host operating system uses one of them and one invited the other?  I need the host and guest on separate physical networks?  Example - my host OS is on our production network, but I want my guests to be on our test network.  Two physical production and test networks are completely separate and no physical connection between them.  Basically, my host Office would be multi-homed.

  Guest VM traffic is done only to the vnet to which you connect.  Therefore, if you configure NIC1 to be on by default in bridge network (vnet0) and NIC2 be bridged to vnet2 (for example), and then configure your guests with a vNIC connected to vnet2.  The prompt only "sees" everything that is connected to NIC2, because it is NOT connected to vnet0/NIC1.

  If you do not need host to go on the network at alltest traffic, you can disable the TCP protocol on the network to test NIC so no traffic host never goes that NIC just let VMWare bypass protocol enabled in order for the traffic of the virtual machine on this NIC

  However, if your host must have access to both networks, then imagine that virtual machines are running on another host on the network.  With your current physical machine with two network cards, ask you the same question: How can you guarantee that the traffic of the computer is done on the production network?  If you do not set a gateway for TCP/IP host on the NIC test network, so that traffic destined for this subnet test will go to this network adapter.  This means that two networks have different subnets, of course.  If the two networks are the same digital subnet (for example: both are 192.168.1.x) then you will have problems even in the absence of the virtual machines.

  The reason you do not set (and normally are not allowed to have two gateways) is if the traffic is destined for a subnet that your computer is not directly connected to, then your machine comes into contact with the bridge.  If you have two (or more) gateways, which is your machine contact?  Beyond simple dishes networks as in this example, you will probably need the assistance of an expert network.
