VMWare snapshot problem

I recently upgraded a server, but before that, I took a snapshot of vmware. I waited a few days to make sure that the server has been run correctly after the upgrade. Appearantly, the snapshot has filled the VM disk. I was unable to start. I deleted the snapshot, but who did not free disk space (at least not yet and it has been more than an hour). I could so he can start by reducing the amount of RAM by using the virtual machine was, but I REALLY need the free disk space. How can I get this free disk space faster. Is there something I can manually remove? Thanks for any advice.

The speed depends on the workload disks and the speed of storage itself. If there is for example a local RAID running on a memory controller cache write-back, this may take a few hours. Anything that helps is to be patient.

... and I tried 2 times today

Once started the process on the ESXi host races and you shouldn't try to start a second time. This could cause problems!

  • VMware ESXi 4.1.0 and snapshot problem - no disk space

    Hi all

We now have a big problem with our free space on the disk. We are using VMware vSphere (vSphere Client ver 4.1.0 and VMware ESXi ver 4.1.0):

Our vm has 2 HDD (500 GB, 1 TB). Now we have only 20 GB of free disk 1 and several snapshot files. To remove the snapshot, we need more than 20 GB of free space (corect?). What we need to do more free space? We can move snapshot files from the first disk to the second disk?

First of all, you can redirect your new snapshot on another store/disk as explained in this article "http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002929".

Secondo, you can delete snapshot older and smaller but not all together as explained in this article by Duncan Epping "http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/01/07/delete-all-snapshots/."

  • snapshot problem

One of the VM has several snapshot taken before. Suddenly, the harrdisk is corrupt. I recover VM by using disk recovery software. Some files are corrupt, can not be recovered. He has now broken instant channel number.

VMSD files are corrupt. But delta disk VMDK flat amd basic disk.

VMware website and forum, I can recreate VMX file by recreating the new virtual machine and by changing some settings.

A descptions VMDK file can be recreated using vmfstools according to the official website of VMware.

Do anyone know if there are methods to recreate the VMSD or VMSN files?

I also find the document to solve the problem of broken chains instant. Do you know how to commit a snapshot if VM has several snapshots?

    Thank you!

You are right about the CID/parentCID, these values must be unique. However, according to the log files and the size of the hard files the current order of the snapshot is: 4-> 1-> 3-> 2-> base. I created the file descriptor suitable for (see you attachment). You just need to rename/edit them and replace the "xxxxxx" with real names. Be sure to only use a (not Notepad) editor that is able to edit UNIX files such as line breaks!

Once you have downloaded the file descriptor, you should be able to create a clone using the:

    vmkfstools-i w2k3_xxxxxx - 000004.vmdk w2k3_xxxxxx_clone.vmdk

BTW, the .vmsn and the files... - ctk.vmdk can be deleted.

  • Exchange 2007 and VMWare snapshots

    Hello

I did a few tests with Exchange 2007 and use it with VMWare. I ended up crashing the Exchange to the point that I could not restore it without making a recovery, so I decided to go back to a snapshot I took about five days earlier. Snapshot of restoration went well until I started the Exchange 2007. I could not Exchange databases to mount. I couldn't get around this problem and I had to reinstall to lose more mail databases.

Is there something with the snapshoting who does that? I know that running databases can be difficult snapshot safely, but oracle atleast never fell down due to a restore.

Your best bet and the cleanest method would be to create a series of scheduled tasks.

    1. Guest virtual stop at programmed time

    2. Snapshot of virtual hosts

    3. Power on virtual guest

This must be done for all the virtual hosts which depends on a database of any kind (Exchange, SQL, Oracle, MySQL, etc) If you plan on relying on instant VMware as a method of recovery after a disaster.

  • VMware player problem

Hi, I'm new first post here. My problem is when I go into vmware settings for my virtual machine to modify some parameters are not editable. Now I'm changing the network card. At the present time, it is set to NAT. I want to change it to a bridge connection, but it won't let me. The setting is blocked... There is no error message. It's simply not selectable.

I did it. All I had to do was stop the machine. Not just shut down or Hibernate. You have to stop.

  • What is the size of the 1st copy of Vmware snapshot delta

If I understand instant, it creates a copy of your image.when delta you first create the snapshot, the snapshot (hard) size is a few megabytes (1000 k or more) and the size of the RAM.

Example - my primary VM's with 4 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk. the VMDK file size is 30 GB

first preview, file snapshot.vmdk will be created which will be around 1000 k

We will create a file over 4 GB RAM

space required for the SNAPSHOT so total is 4 GB + 1000 k is this correct?

Now, if I use instant, it can push up to the original size of VM primary, means it can grow up to 30 GB.

that mean, when I restart the snapshot virtual machine size will be 60 GB?

    Please advice

    Concerning

    Avinash

Disk space required when you create a snapshot depends on whether the virtual machine is turned on or off. What you describe on the file .vmsn is correct for the virtual computer power on. The .vmsn file contains the State of the virtual machine (memory) as well as its configuration (.vmx file). With the virtual machine off there is not need to backup the memory so that the file is only a few hundred bytes in size.

The initial sizes for files hard depending on size delta set virtual disk service, since delta files are fragmented files that contain metadata in addition to the user data. It also makes a difference if the virtual machine is turned on or off.

..., when I restart the snapshot of the VM size will be 60 GB?

No, snapshots files store only modified data blocks that are written with the active snapshot. Each of these blocks of data points to the original location in the basic disk. So if delete you / consolidate these blocks are written to the original location in the Basic virtual disk file.

Please take a look at for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1015180 which explains the functioning of snapshots in VMware products.

  • Result of Get-Snapshot problem

    Hi all

I have a problem with a script. I use Get-Snapshot on vCenter, but the result seems wrong.

The result of the return 20501,03 Mo command but on the LUN, the size is 3671040 + 17408

My second problem with the command is the location of the snapshot. If the snapshot is not located in the directory of the virtual machine (workingdir is used on the vmx file), the command returns-1.

    The command works well?

    Thank you

I can confirm that there are indeed some problems with the cmdlet Get-Snapshot.

Note that the data store Navigator doesn't tell you the full story either.

It does not show - flat files and - delta you see when the console files or an SSH session.

  • VMware HA problem with isolated host.

Hello, we have two IBM x 3850 M2 running ESX 3.5 U4 (153875).  Both are attached via NAS (NFS) to an IBM N3600 (Netapp FAS2050C).  Each server has two NETWORK adapter configured on their system console vSwitches (team) and there is an additional private network running for the storage and vMotion (with two NIC of each).

We have DRS and HA enabled for our cluster with two nodes with the following parameters of HA:

    • Host allowed failures: 1

    • Enable the VMs to be powered even if they violate constraints of availability

    • VM restart priority: medium

    • The host Isolation response: stop the virtual machine

    • Enable VM monitoring (high)

If I pull the power on one of the hosts, virtual machines are automatically provisioned on the host survivor as expected.  However, if I simulate double NIC failure on one of the hosts by unplugging both the System Console env, we lack in the following behavior:

    1. On the host that has been isolated (prodsys-vm1), the logs indicate that the server has detected it is isolated and begins to shut down its virtual machine.

    2. The host of survivor (prodsys-vm2) notes that prodsys-vm1 disappeared.

    3. prodsys-vm2 saves the VM "isolated" and tries to turn on.  The following error message is observed for each VM has failed:

[2009-07-24 13:00:17.352 'vm:/vmfs/volumes/2e5dc29c-712e74ba/Test System/Test System.vmx' 3076461472 info] Question info: Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/2e5dc29c-712e74ba/Test System/Test System.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Reason: Device or resource busy., Id: 0 : Type : 2, Default: 0, Number of options: 1
    [2009-07-24 13:00:17.352 'BaseLibs' 21044144 info] Disconnect check in progress: /vmfs/volumes/2e5dc29c-712e74ba/Test System/Test System.vmx

    Reason: Device or resource busy.

    1. prodsys-vm2 then unregisters each virtual computer.

    2. Wait several minutes, but no other attempts are made to register and/or marketing the virtual machine failed.

    3. Now, if I register manually an of from the prodsys-vm2 failed VM console, it is immediately and without further interaction with me under tension.  In addition, this seems to trigger the re-registration of VM chess which is then subsequently automatically switched on without error.

The obvious conclusion here is that prodsys-vm2 does not prodsys-vm1 enough time to stop the virtual machine before trying to restart.  I imagine that this could potentially be adjusted by getting the das.failuredetectiontime (I see a recommendation of the 1960s).

    A few questions though:

    • Why don't prodsys-vm2 try again to register and start the virtual machine failed after the first attempt?

    • Why when I joined one manually it suddenly decided to register and start up of the rest on its own?

    • Is it possible to keep my time failuredetection low (for faster recovery) and still be able to avoid this situation?  I could see a situation where maybe even 60s would be high enough.  It seems that this should be handled with more elegance that just get a time-out value...

Of course, there are some fixes that might apply to our facilities and those who can give a try.  Will also lift it in support, but hoping someone out there might have some ideas.

    Thank you!

    Sorry,

I forgot the second half of this message:

    VMware High Availability (HA)

Virtual Machines using a NFS data store could fail after an HA failover event

When you have the overcommitment of memory with virtual machines on a NFS datastore, it creates a vswp file, which is a size swap file non-zero. In this scenario if HA failover events occur and the AP are defined on THAT VM leave power on, you may have a failure of virtual machine on the host where the virtual machine was originally executed before the HA event.

If you don't have an overcommitment of memory with virtual machines on a datastore NFS, so HA failover events occur with the parameter THAT VM leave it turned on, in addition to the migration of the virtual machine running on the original host may fail.

Solution: Apply Patch ESX350-200905401-BG to ESX Server 3.5 and hosts Patch ESXe350-200905401-I-BG of ESX Server 3i version 3.5 host computers.

When a Virtual Machine running on a NAS data store is configured to be stopped or left turned on in response to the isolation of the host, the Virtual Machine may attempt to run simultaneously on two hosts an event of network isolation

Multiple network that causes failure host isolation and loss of access to the network for the data store, if a virtual machine is configured with the setting stop VM or VM leave it turned on in case of isolation of the host, the virtual machine may not respond indefinitely. As HA tries to turn off the virtual machine and restart on another host, two instances of the virtual machine may appear in the VI Client. There is no data corruption, because HA and VMFS properly control access to the data of the virtual machine, but the original virtual machine becomes inadmissible. After access to the data store is restored on the isolated host, the original virtual machine can be manually powered down.

Solution: In environments NFS or iSCSI, select power off the virtual machine as the response of virtual machine in a cluster by default if a host is isolated.

  • Snapshoting problem?

I currently put in place so that they have a secondary virtual disk which them are attached to virtual machines, this drive is on a separate NFS on the primary virtual disks datastore.

When I take a snapshot of the virtual machine, it creates a new virtual disk on the data store main nfs and makes the secondary virtual disk. The original vmdk file remains on secondary data store. Is this normal? I really don't want to do.

    Thank you

    Rob

by default, then snapshot will be created in the same folder where the files reside dishes orginal. If don't need to worry about this.

Snapshot creates a new delta file for each flat vmdk file in the same folder where and keep any data store. But when you delete the snapshot, it engages in the same folder again.

    Hello

We lack ESX 3.5 - U3, VC 2.5 - U3 and VCB 1.5 framework. VCB framework is installed on the server of the VC (physical windows 2003 host). When I'm connected to the VC via the VI client, I right click on my blackberry VM running Windows 2003 32 bit - Standard Edition and don't take a picture of him OK no probs.

However, when I run the command directory c:\program files\vmware\VCB framework vcbmounter, it tries to create a snapshot, and eventually times out. My VI client, I see the task of "Creating the Flash Virtual Machine" and after 15 minutes, he said "Operation timed out".

ESX Server hosting the virtual machine then has an alarm indicating "unable to apply settings of DRS resource to host & lt; esx host name & gt;... Operation failed because another task is ongoing." I end up having to shut down the VM, migrate to another ESX host and restart the ESX host with this error, and he returned to the top of.

This blackberry VM was P2V would use VMware Conveter successfully. I am able to successfully do this vcbmounter on other virtual machines that have been created from scratch eithyer or deployed from templates.

    Any ideas?

Yes. This is exactly the case.
