VMware ESX4 and license as single Cluster View4

We wanted to test VMware View for a possible deployment, so we bought 2 (10

packs of user licenses) of View3 with subscription.  So, by the time I got 4

value processors to ESX 3.5.  We put together 3 physical boxes capable of each

to organize each 4 processors.  To begin, we have 2 boxes with a single processor

each (6 cores per processor) and the 3rd box has 2 CPUs (even 6 hearts

each).  The 3 boxes are managed inside of vCenter Server 1

cluster.  The plan was to buy more licenses of view as necessary and much more

physical processors as needed.  Now, here's the problem I see.

Soon I also want to make virtualization of servers in the same cluster.  Now

that we have upgraded to View4 the authorisation system has completely changed.

Instead of one per processor, they are doing one per VM license.

So my problem/question is...

How to make a group of ESX4 servers share licensing for both view

4 (for workstation virtualization) and the right ESX4 (virtualization server)?

As far as I can tell the new license is apples and oranges.

View is now authorized by VM and ESX is still licensed per processor.  My

thought was under the former regime of license, I was responsible for ensuring that I have

did not run workstation VMs I saw more licenses for and on the server

side have no more virtual processors dedicated virtual servers that I had

physical cores in the physical processors I distributed under license ESX.  This regime

was compatible on a single cluster.  But since I can only say an ESX

Server code for a single license whether licensed View4 or an ESX4

license, I see no way for it to shoot with the new permit system.

How to mix ESX and view within the same group?

I don't know, I'm entirely. But will try to clarify. View license has not really changed. It has always been by VM CPU not and still is. He was also THAT controlled EULA that infrastructure under license under the notice could not be used to run the office workloads. No desktop and server. Now, if you want to mix they is to make vSphere license and add the view components that do not include parts VI3/vSphere.

Please see the folloing for more details.

  • Issue of license VMware Workstation and VMplayer

    Hi all:

Can anyone help to answer this question.  Thank you in advance.

I have a valid license of VMware Workstation 9, can VMware Workstation and the VMplayer separately install on two computers and use them in business environment?

The VMware Player delivered in the Installation of VMware Workstation is not separable from the installation of VMware Workstation or VMware Workstation license.  If you want to run VMware Player by itself then you must download the VMware Player installer, which installs only VMware Player not VMware Workstation.  You cannot cut files VMware Workstation installed between two systems.  So if you want to use it commercially you must buy a license of VMware Fusion!

I hope that now this is clear enough for you to grab!

  • VMware vSphere 4 licenses essential question and the number of processors

    Hi all

I have a question about the Essentials of VMware vSphere 4.1 license. We have a client interested in a VMware vSphere Essentials license. The machine runs on 2 x processor Xeon 5675 6 c. Now I read somewhere that there was a limitation of the number of processors that can be used with the edition of Essentials. If I remember correctly, the number of physical sockets is limited to 2, but I remember that there is another limit, but I could not find the document describing and wonder:

Is there a limitation on the maximum number of 4 cores on one physical processor that can or will be used by VMware vSphere 4.1 Essentials or there is a limitation on the number of 4 vCPU that can be assigned to a guest?

I would like to know because if this is a limitation on the number of vCPU that can be assigned to a customer that would not be a problem because we have no guests in need of vCPU, then 2 more, but if this is a limitation on the number of cores that would be used by VMware vSphere Essentials, it would be a waste of money to buy a 6-Core ;-)

    Hello.

2 taken with 3 guests, 6 hearts and SMP 4 lanes for virtual machines.

These limitations are available at: http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/small_business_editions_comparison.html

  • VMware View and MS Windows 7 License Manager

I'm looking to install VMware View and use Windows 7 Ent or

Pro as the guest operating system.

What are the Microsoft Licensing options?

Is the use of a server KMS, the best solution, or should I just

use a key in the specification of customization, as I did with Windows XP?

If you have a deployment of medium to high, I suggest to use a KMS server to validate the license. If you enter your MAK license and deploy several pools or in the pool even over and over again. each time Windows will activate using a new MAK license until they are all exhausted.

I just went through an installation of KMS server, and I have to say was one of install it more simple I've ever done.

  • VMware View and vSphere/ESX4

I never tested with VMware View in any installation ESX so please forgive my ignorance on the subject.

What I've read, I know that VMware View is not currently supported under vSphere but it should be later in the year.

My question is: is it possible to run VMware View in vSphere/ESX4 and y at - it not crash you have experienced? I have a few clients who want to start a project with the product, but I'm tired to sell it to them without knowing if it is possible to run in vSphere or not.

As I understand it, VMware View is just a series of virtual machines (View Manager for the management) and several other virtual machines for delivery of operating system invited to end users, so I think its possible to run, just not supported.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thank you.

Exactly how desktop computers are delivered to the end user? They give you a connection with the VI Client to vCenter and displays the available machines, they control?

Display Client, Thin Client or View Portal (browser). Basically, we use RDP as the main Protocol for now (PCoverIP is the slate and many talked of the future Protocol). In simple terms, us tie in with the AD. The user connects by using one of the methods mentioned. The broker for connections check the user/pass, see what desktop computers - if any - they have right to and presents this list to the user. The user selects and then, if the SSO is enabled, records in their office environment. They have several desktop computers and screens (up to 4) if necessary.

When the view is supported for vSphere and released, you know / think it will be difficult to migrate from individual offices shared through the clones related, or computers is - same not possible?

God I hope not. For now, I have no idea, but I imagine they would create some sort of upgrade. View Manager is nothing else than a web application.

I'm sure I think other issues later, but I can review the product documentation to answer most of them. I wanted to just grab a little better quickly because I have an appointment in an hour or two with a client

Documentation has made a huge difference and give you a better idea of how this works.

  • VMware DRS and VMware HA

I'm allowed to use VMware DRS and HA but I'm not familiar with what exactly they can do for me and how they might relate to Vmotion.  I turned on my 2 hosts of vmotion, but I guess my virtual machines do not automatically move from one host to another one grave host fails, until it is completely configured.   Could someone give me a quick description and point me in the right direction on how I can use?

I have licenses for the company for the full suite of vsphere.

    DRS - distributed Service Resouces

This process will recommend to move a virtual machine for performance reasons.  This can be set to automatically move virtual machine.  We have defined it this way and it works very well.  VM move on their own see and at night.

    HA - high availability

If a host goes down, this service starts the VM who have been on this subject, to another host automatically.  The virtual machine will be turned off unexpectedly well.

    FT - fault tolerance

This feature is introduced in ESX4 and keep a copy running on another host.  If the primary host fails, the other takes over with no downtime.  It is currently limited to VM with one vCPU however.

DRS and HA are configured in the properties of a Cluster.  If you do not have a cluster, right-click on a datacenter in VC and create a cluster.  Move the hosts in the cluster.  Drag and drop works fine.  Right-click on the cluster, and then select both.  Once activated, you can configure the DRS and HA.

  • Cloning and licenses

I have 16 laptops that I use for the safety tests.  They must be wiped out and reconfigured after business travel.

We have been under XP SP3 so far, but we must move on to Vista.  Professional Vista licenses are available from our KMS on the field (that I do not have access to), but we do not know how this will all work together.

When you destroy a domain Vista workstation, then reconnect it. will he get the same license?  In the same way that a machine can pull the same reserved IP address from the DHCP server, as it is MAC address has not changed?

If anyone has any advice on this subject would be great, but I guess I would especially need a resource to learn all of the questions I should ask here.  Maybe a link that explains how Vista, cloning and licenses all work together.  Sorry if this all sounds vague.

Check in the IT Pro TechNet forums forums - this kind of question is really beyond the assistance that we provide here because we support users who install Vista for single computer use.

  • configuration of vCOP and licensing NOOB question

    Friends,

I searched for a few loads solution / reporting for vSphere environment and after a few days with Veeam One

I downloaded vCOP test to see if it's something I need (apparently...)

Unfortunately I have not understande what wrong with my way of thinking... I see a license key on the evaluation of product mywmare page - but the auto-generated license key

vCOP in web view client is different. In Operations Manager, I see only three tabs: operations, environment and alerts... I see no reports etc...

In configuration I see service running, connected vcenter, the status of 'authorized' product

Where is the flaw? Versions? Is it necessary to change the license but how?

Please advice; I think that it is something so obvious that I can't find a solution online...

  • VMware tools and host of virtual hardware upgrade process

We currently have 8 guests esx4 we plan to upgrade to esxi5.  Our downtime window is relatively low.  We should have sufficient time to upgrade all hosts, but I'm not so sure that we will be able to get all the vm tools and equipment as well updated.  Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

Or would it be best to try to get half of the hosts and all the computers upgraded this time and the other half next time?  We have not all hosts the value automatically vmotion machines so that they remain in place unless you have an accident.  In addition, in this scenario is any problem to launch half esx4 and the other half to esxi5?

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Steve Hrabak

Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

There is no problem.  Your guests will not be able to take advantage of some of the new features added with vHardware 8, but as they are upgraded they will be.

    http://www.VMware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vSphere-ESX-vCenter-Server-50-new-features.html

y at - it no problem running esx4 half and half to esxi5

No worries there, too.  The only thing that you must do is upgrade to VMFS5.  The bed and breakfast vSphere5 no cannot be able to see a LUN VMFS5, but everyone can see and use a LUN VMFS3

  • VMware ESXi 5 licenses

    Hello

I think I have too much choice, but someone who has more experience on ESXi 5 licenses might have a better deal...

We have 2 locations for the moment, run 2 servers ESXi 5 the other branch done 3 of the same thing.

Once more the RAM on certain hosts would be awesome, and of course Central magagment would be great.

I found the key packs, like right now THAT HA no is not essential - VMware vSphere Essentials Kit would suffice - offers more RAM, centralized management, but only for 3 guests.

Seems I need centralized management for multiple hosts I choose Standard Kit of acceleration? But in this case, Miss me the ability to upgrade RAM - or not with the terms in the Kit of Essentials and is also much more expensive...

What seems the best offer price, buy two essential elements it's can I manage 5 hosts under the same server vCenter (guees not)?

Could someone give advice on this issue?

    Kind regards

... where your I find some information?

In the document of pricing and licenses white at http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf (page 7)

.. vCenter Server Standard begins from 6000 USD non-larger than 32 GB RAM... as well as other licenses...

With the acceleration Standard Kit, you get an instance of vCenter Server Standard more processor Standard with 32GB vRAM right 8 licenses each (256 GB total) and you can add additional CPU if necessary licenses. (see page 8 in the same document as above)

  • VMWare Player and VLAN

    Hi all out there.

I have a problem regarding virtual local networks and virtualization. The configuration is as follows. Our developers are about to get virtual machines with Linux (centos) guests on their desktop computers. Host machines are Windows 7 boxes with sufficient CPU, RAM and disk space. Each box has only one NIC installed and connected to the internal LAN. On this single cable Lan, there should be 2 VLANS:

    1. vLan id 100 for windows hosts (configured as default vLan on the switch ports)
    2. vLan id 199 for the machine virtual (different configuration for routing/firewall/proxy)

The network for the virtual machine must be set to bridged, because making web development, developers must be able to access Web servers installed on the virtual machines via a browser.

The original plan was to use VMware Player, install Linux, configure the vLan in the comments, and it works. But no package has left the virtual machine when you ping the default gateway of the vLan 199. To me, it seems that something is declining for all packages on vLan the vLan 199.

    The questions are:

    • VLANs are supported by VMware Player or workstation after all?
    • They are supported in a configuration like that?
    • How do we? Must be setup in Windows as well?

    Help would be very nice

    Greetings

    Joachim

The default virtual network Editor is not installed with VMware Player and you will need to transform automatic bridging and define VMnet0 to use vLAN199 and then bridge network adapter to the Virtual Machine should work.

For the workaround you can run VMware-player-* .exe - e c:\vmptmp from a command line and then search for the c:\vmptmp\network.cab file and extract (double-click on the .cab file) vmnetcfg.exe (virtual network editor) file in the working directory of VMware Player usually 'C:\Program Files\VMware/VMware Player', you can create a shortcut and place it with the shortcut of VMware Player If you want easier access.  NOTE: It takes several minutes for the VMware-player-* .exe to extract all then be patient.

  • Upgrade VMware tools and hardware on vSphere

    Hello

After a few questions, I seem to be a host to complete my move to vSphere, and I'm looking at the next steps - VMWare tools and update virtual machine hardware.

Now, it seems reasonable to me to upgrade to VMWare tools, but the material I'm undecided.

As I see it, VMware tools requires a reboot, I won't be able to do in working time, but that's just a reboot (sure of 60 odd servers, but still it is probably worth the time spent), but the material of vmware seems not critical for me? VMS seem to be running ok (Mix of Linux, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008) and I wonder if I'll get all the benefits of the upgrade of these? Is there something that puts me in danger if I let the computer virtual hardware version 4?

It is mainly a question I have organize downtime, and the upgrade seems not smooth at all (completely detach existing NIC? Loss of MAC address I linked to the servers of licenses etc.) so if there is no benefit at this point, I'll be ok to keep the version 4?

All advice appreciated, if I missed anything big I'd appreciate knowing what!

    Thank you!

    Hello.

You will miss out on some of the new features Virtual material, but if you're not having performance issues it is in somewhat of a moot point.  The biggest potential problem is leaving all these VMs v4 and runs the risk of another (or one that follows) version of vSphere perhaps not material no longer v4 support.  Hardware upgrades are inevitable, so it's really just a matter of do it now or do it later.  If you are comfortable delaying the inevitable, so there is no reason to upgrade to v7 now.

    Good luck!

  • Testing ESX4 and vCenter

is it possible to download ESX4 and install it on 3 different hosts?  I would like to demonstrate vSphere for a company looking to see if it will be a choice for their environment and especially to see HA/DRS and demo FT would be for them.   So, to show FT, I need 3 parameters of hosts.

Yes, it is possible with ESXi 3. But please make sure you have all pre-requisites them.

  • Requirements VMware HA and DRS.

On vmware site I was just brushing my knowledge on VMware HA and DRS and found a conflict. Someone can it confirm please.

One of the requirements for VMware vmotion and DRS turns "the virtual machine configuration file must not reside on a VMFS located on the shared data store. . . "(Ref: http://www.vmware.com/support/vc13/doc/c2vmotionreqs12.html) "

But VMware HA says one of the requirements as "cluster-enabled VMware HA, all virtual machines and their configuration files to .

reside on the shared storage (Fibre Channel SAN, iSCSI SAN, or NAS iSCSI SAN), because you have to

' be able to power on the virtual machine on any host in the cluster " (Ref: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_ha_wp.pdf ( )

What does that mean? Or the constraint of VMware vmotion is wrong? I'm just confused!

The first link is-old vMotion applies to Virtual Center 1.3 and ESX2.

"The virtual machine configuration file should not reside on a VMFS located on the shared data store '... This applies to 2 ESX hosts. At the time, the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file was located locally on the ESX host, run the virtual machine in/home/default vmware...  This file have been moved to the local directory on the target host during vMotion...

This was changed to ESX3, who, with Virtual Center 2, introduced also HA...

For HA to work all the VM files must reside on the shared storage. This makes all slender VM files available to other hosts of clusters at all times. (difficult to extract different files from a host of dead).
