  • VMWare Player + Ubuntu 14.04 memory leak

    Hello.

I have a newly built host Ubuntu LTS 14.04.  I installed VMWare player 6.0.3 build-1895310 64-bit.   The host has a processor i5 and 16 GB of RAM.  I have a Windows 7 VM Pro with 4 GB of RAM allocated to it.  This virtual machine is running video management software which is write about 2 MB/s on the virtual disk.  When I start the VM I see it consume about 4 GB of RAM as expected, but then I notice that Linux (via top) slowly eats away at the remaining RAM.  An hour later and I'm almost out of wired RAM.

The only solution is of course a restart, as the leak seems to be happening in the kernel or a driver.  I see not a process user-land eating this.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    Jim

After a call with the Global Support VMWare, only it turns out it was my mistake.  It is / was without leaking memory.  For some reason, the kernel has cached of massive amounts of RAM, probably as a result of the use of the heavy drive.  The value 14946256 of my previous post is where the RAM was going.

  • Problem installing vmware in Ubuntu 11.10 tools

I've upgraded from vmware workstation 7 to 8 on a windows 7 pro workstation. I've added to my VM - 11.10 Ubuntu guest. Now I have a problem installing vmware tools.  That's what I did:

((1) installed Ubuntu 11.10 CD in the drive, 2) open vmware and Tools CD added to office.  (3) connect you open terminal window.and.  Since I'm new to Linux, I'm stuck on how to set a password.  I type sudo passwd root, and I can't type anything in the window.

Ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    You have two questions unrealated

    (1) with respect to the OS - Ubuntu 11.10 - these shoud guest invited on ubuntuforums.org Creafe a connection there and ask in the beginner's forum.

Tip - You don't really have need a password for root in Ubuntu.  Use you sudo to run root permisssions wherer programs are needed.  He said on top of each terminal.

    (2) you have any questions on how to install VMware Tools in a Linux (Ubuntu 11.10) Guest.  You most certainly need assistance with this.  In the toolbar of the program, you will see a tab called "Help".  It only contained other information you are looking for.

See the sections on VMware Tools.   They are really useful!

Tip: You do not use the OS installation disc that you used to create the virtual machine. Look closely under the VM tab at the top. There will be an option in the drop-down list that says "The Install Vmware Tools" you need to select this option.  The insatll will be mounted as if by magic in SLE directory/Media in the comments.  Copy the tarred on this cdrom in / tmp.  Then naviagate (carefully) in / tmp and unpack the file you copied.  Carefully change (look at you spelling - do what I say - not as I do in this post!) to the directoyrf that was created.  Exceute as su (i.e. root - like in the 1 trick.)  the .pl program wiil be contain breast.  Technically, this is called a "script" don't forget to put a. / before the script name or the bad dthing don't know he lives there.  He will ask youj on many issues.  Answer Yes to all these thatg you can.  Most likely, he will say he does not find the gcc compiler (gcc to learn more about the new program of thisbrfand the man.  He complains of missing headers.  Exit the script (Ctrl + c).  Run a progarlm (as root!) called apt - get.  Type the command apt - get install build-esseential.  Thatt is going to install the compiler you need!   Yes still needs to install the header ogical file well! Phew!  The best way I found to do this is to install a nifty program called synaptic. Use apt - get install synaptic.  I think that Ubuntu even comes with a somewahat more easy to program called apt - get it will tell you and have fun there no Super Powers mean if you type an incorrect order!   I digress from the subject.   So, you can use use "sudo aptitude install synaptic l.  Now issue the command uname - r.  He sleeps on the same kernel you use since I use Ubuntu 11.10 asI type while I'm about to uplgrade to the very scary Ubuntu 12.04.  You don't want to do it yourself.

    3.0.0 - 12-Generic

Now launch Synaptic.  There will be a message the first time on the program expalining.  If you want to see it every time to understand this program if y0ou forget don't check the box saying you don't wang to see this every time.  BTW youi will be asked for your root passworfd to run the program.  Hope you rfemembered it!

In any case in the search box copy, then paste the result above (one that ends with - generic - but anything copylthe) there will be l be a long list of items, but choose the one that has the string above and the word "headers".  Insatll who.  After all it can return to the order which took end. / pl and run it once more.  Answere questions.  It will end with the encouraging words (you can take advantage of the VMware Tools.  Then, run the command - vmware-toolbox as it says.

F well there you have it in short.  My price for Linux and Mwar advice is reawsonable please contact me at one of my addresses, alias - [email protected] and we can talk about payment.

Hello. I downloaded the trial version of VMWare for Linux 7.1.5 and tried to install it in Ubuntu 11.10 dreamlike Ocelot (64-bit). Installation went fine, but when I started the program he could not compile or build the kernel modules. Here is the log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/809532/. Some help would be appreciated.

    Hello

VMware 7.1 is not compatible with the kernel supplied with 11.10. You need to patch for vmware module sources to compile on that core. Take a look on:

    Hello community,

I know this should be taken for the Ubuntu forums, but Ubuntu 10.4 just came out and I can't wait to test drive it. I downloaded VMWare and installed far.

After you have created an account, I selected the account and by typing my password. As I type the password nothing would show up. I guess that when you type in you password nothing is displayed, not even * then I'm thinking maybe that VMWare does not receive the keyboard input. Has anyone faced this kind of problem?

In the new Wizard of VM, there is a page where you choose a CD-ROM drive or ISO file to use with easy installation. The last choice is "I'll install the operating system later. Choose this one, and no guest will be installed up until you do it yourself.

  • Installation/update of VMWare on Ubuntu on Fusion tools

I'm using Ubuntu Linux on the merger (latest version), and he tells me that VMWare Tools are not installed. I think they need to update. How to make updates? I Googled it and tried a few commands in the terminal, but do not by far. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Nathan

Problems with the specific indications "install or upgrading VMware tools in a Linux Virtual Machine from the command line with the Tar Wizard" in the help file for VMware Fusion, is that they are common because not all Linux distributions are the same, and as such, he should be familiar with the different characteristics of each distribution to install VMware Tools on Linux...

Species, in the old distributions of Linux, that the mount point is usually / mnt still under Ubuntu, the point is/Media editing so you would need to replace by good fully qualified path whether on your particular Linux distribution compared to what it shows in the directions.

That said, and after reviewing at the output of the Terminal commands, it shows that not only were using the full qualified path wrong do not issue you orders correctly at first and I'm don't know why you would not just extract the installer of VMware via the GUI tar as I suggested earlier and then go forward from the command line.  In any case below the commands in the order that they should appear based on what is typical on Ubuntu.

After that selection install VMware Tools from the Virtual Machine menu and it is mounted on the Ubuntu desktop (this normally occurs automatically in this distro) open a Terminal and deal with the following commands.

Note: You will need to check the segment "cdrom0' of the command"tar"to this being safe, it's 'cdrom0' not 'cdrom1' and using an asterisk in the name of archive tar is correct because you don't actually need to use the full name as"VMwareTools - 7.9.6 - 173382.tar.gz.

    cd /tmp
    tar zxpf /media/cdrom0/*.tar.gz
    cd vmware-tools-distrib
    sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Also, point you issue the command 'sudo./vmware-install.pl' and the actual installation process starts after you type your password then from then on, you can simply press Enter for the questions that followed, with the exception of the resolution of the screen if you want it to be something else, then the default value.

If you have errors or problems be sure to copy and paste the contents of the Terminal Services session to the response unit.

    Hello

I try to get vmware tools installed on a Ubuntu Server that we created in VMware. I found several resources on the internet which mention the use VMwareTool -. tar.gz from the CD-ROM. When I look at the disks we created .iso image that we downloaded, I don't see any VMwareTool -. tar.gz for version 3.5. I have found an old version of VMwareTool-*.tar.gz for version 3.0. However, if I install this on a system, I see that I have installed vmware tools shows as being obsolete.

Where can I find the VMwareTool-*.tar.gz that will not be exceeded if I install it on a linux machine?

Remove the physical CD. It is a virtual CD-ROM. You can also consult

dmesg to see how the other the CDROM is presented and edit that one.

    a. run vmware - uninstall - tools.pl (if you get what other messages on modules installed)

    b. create the vmware-tools-distrib directory

    c. apply the hotfix according to the directives of the blog page

    d. run vmware - install.pl

If all else fails, follow the suggestion of the error message to delete the modules 'by hand' and then re-run the installation

  • IPSec on VMWare ESX 5.1 communication problems

    Hello

We have 2 computer systems.  You running us VMWare ESX 5.1 and the other is running Ubuntu 14.04.  We have problems for IPSec to work between the two systems.  We cannot find any documentation or known issues with IPsec on VMWare ESX 5.1, so we're going to reach out to the community.

    Here's what we did:

    1. we configured Ubuntu and VMWare systems to use IPv6, we can ping each other using IPv6.

    2. we configure IPSec on an Ubuntu operating system by following the instructions below:

    https://help.Ubuntu.com/community/IPSecHowTo

    3. we have followed the instructions below to configure IPsec on VMWare.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1021769

    Here's the problem:

When 2 Ubuntu systems run IPsec, they are able to ping each other.  However, when allow us IPSec communications between VMWare and Ubuntu, the ping is suspended.

Here is the result of the configuration of command esxcli on VMWare:

    UBUNTU. IPv6.ADDRESS-> Ubuntu IPv6 address

VMWARE. IPv6.ADDRESS-> address IPv6 from VMWARE

    Here's what we found:

After debugging the problem (using tcpdump), we found that the VMWare system sends the ESP packets, but never sends a package AH (required for IPSec authentication).  Even when the encryption protocol is null, the system of VMWare would always send ESP packets, but never once sent a package of AH.

Here is the resulting execution trace: Ubuntu - ping-> VMWare:

    Summary:

There seems to be a problem with IPSec in VMWare ESX 5.1 on IPv6.

We noticed that the downloads section of the site support provided patches for VMWare ESx 4.x and earlier, but lack of patches for VMWare ESx 5.x.

Are there known issues in this area or available patches to fix this problem?  Your kind suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Sorry for the late reply, but here the analysis of what is happening and why you are experiencing a problem.

The Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) to IPsec protocol will encrypt a payload of the packet and can

Optionally authenticate the packages as well. You do not include orders allowing you to set the

Security Association (SA) and political security (PS), but the output in your post indicates that you

you want to encrypt the payloads both authenticate packets in mode of transport between the hosts.

I don't know why the Ubuntu IPsec HowTo examples using protocols AH and ESP to encrypt and

authenticate the packets. In our view, it is best done in a single step with ESP, ESXi only

offer the option of AH with IPsec. Of course, this requires configuring the ESXi server and your

The host with a configuration of IPsec compatible Ubuntu (or any other operating system).

To illustrate, suppose the ESXi server has the address 2001:db8:1 and the host of Ubuntu has the

address 2001:db8:2. We will use cbc-3des for encryption of the useful and hmac-sha2-256 load for integrity

On the ESXi host, the commands to do this might look like this (of course, you need to generate your)

  • VMWare Player-Challenge with network installation to enable the work offline connection-thanks in advance for any help

Thank you very much in advance for all advice here.

    My situation:

Developer of novice using a laptop Windows 7 with Ubuntu Server on VMWare Player.

Customer need and server side development progress on the computer laptop while at home and outside (travel, sometimes without internet/Wi-Fi connection)

I tried NAT, Bridged, Host-only, and can't seem to find an approach that works offline...

    More details below...

    My question

How to configure the network to use VMWare player for development while home/away (PCI offline without an internet connection)?

    Thanks again

    Tony

    Other details

My laptop runs Win7, I use Google Chrome, PuTTY, WinSCP client-side

My hardware router has an IP address 192.168.0.1

My VMware - Server Ubuntu - is configured to use the DHCP protocol

Online I mean a wireless connection to the router and the internet

    Offline - I mean wireless internet connection/no

    Networking networking

Works ok online. Does not work in offline mode

When online, I get IP 192.168.0.7 ifconfig in vmware... I can ping the router from the virtual machine and ping the server ubuntu from the command-line to Win7

Offline... Ping from VM to the router and Ping from Win7 to VM fail.

    NAT networking

Does not work online or offline

When 'online' I get IP 192.168.91.128 to ifconfig in VMware, I can ping the router hardware virtual machine ok. When I ping the server ubuntu command line of Win 7 I Request Timed Out

In offline mode, I get the same IP 192.168.91.128 to ifconfig in the virtual machine. I can't ping the virtual machine hardware router... Destination Host Unreachable. When I ping the server ubuntu command line of Win 7 I have inaccessible Destination host

    Host-Only

does not work for me either online of offline...

While online, that is to say that I can get the IP... 192 168 110 128 but the virtual machine can't ping router... Network unreachable. Win7 cannot ping server... Request Timed Out

While offline, I get the same address IP 192 168 110 128, but VM is unable to ping router network unreachable. Win7 cannot ping server... Destination Host Unreachable

On the screenshot-VMnet1 as VMnet8 - have APIPA (assigned automatically free private) IP addresses, which should not be the case. Unfortunately I can't tell you what is the cause! Could be something of a facility fails to a VPN client. What you can do, is click on the 'Restore defaults' button in the editor of virtual network or re - install VMware Player (uninstall, reboot the host and reinstall "as Administrator").

If you have access to the virtual network editor depends on the VMware Player version you are using. With some older versions - which had the "vmnetui.dll" in the installation folder - it was possible to start to operate:

    rundll32.exe vmnetui.dll VMNetUI_ShowStandalone

  • Ubuntu/Debian comments missing in VSphere 5 customization

    Hello

It seems that comments customization support for Debian/Ubuntu and other Linux OSes has been removed in VSphere 5. He worked at 3.5, 4.0 and 4.1, and there is no mention of his withdrawal in the VSphere 5 release notes.

Our automated deployment scripts are based on personalization of comments, so now we have a rollback to 4.1.

Does anyone know if support customization comments for Ubuntu/Debian will be restored in the future VSphere releases/patches?

    Kind regards

    Francesco Cambiaso

Is no longer supported. I feel that VMware and Ubuntu are on the outs.

    http://bit.LY/pHTi10

    Symptoms

    • You cannot customize a guest in vSphere 5.0 operating system
    • Before the upgrade to vSphere 5.0, you were able to customize the guest operating system

    Resolution

From vSphere 5.0, support for the following operating systems is discouraged:

    • Debian (all versions)
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 Update 1-7
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 1-9
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8.0 Service Pack 3
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.0 Service Pack 1-4
    • Ubuntu (all versions)
    • Windows 2000 (all versions)

Comments customization instead of tier-1 and the older comments in vSphere 5.0 operating systems are no longer supported. For more information about the operating systems supported in vSphere 5.0, refer to the VMware Compatibility Guide.
