VMware-kvm interface?

Hi all

In the release notes, there is mention of a 'VMWare-KVM interface.

This sound interesting and I would like to use VMWare Workstation as a graphical interface for the KVM virtual machines.

But, I can't find any mention of KVM in the graphical interface anywhere. I tried 'connect to server' and specifying the URL as qemu: System / / / and localhost, but it gives me just logical error messages such as 'cannot be resolved.

I can't find good documentation on the use of the VMWare-KVM interface. So, where can I find it?

KVM in this context is 'screen-keyboard-mouse' instead of 'kernel-based virtual machine.'

I tried to check "do not show again suspicion" but this has no effect. I tried the deselection of VMWare-KVM - preferences. Once again no effect. I imagine that there is a line that I can add a...\roaming\vmware\preferences.ini which will disable it. Does anyone know what would be the format for this?

    Thanks PBreeze

    Hello

    Welcome to community work station!

I'm sorry. I think it's a bug in vmware-kvm on Windows 7. I can reproduce the problem on Windows 7 with 12.1.0 Workstation. But it works well on Windows 8.1.

Temporary workaround configures it in the preferences file you mentioned. Add below line to % APPDATA%\VMware\preferences.ini:

    hint.vmkvm.usageHint = "FALSE"

I'll report a bug of product for it. Thank you for bringing This problem to us!

  • "VMware-KVM" can act as a countermeasure for detectors VM?

VMware-KVM- Many of our customers have requested a way to run a virtual machine so that their employees or students do not realize they are in a virtual machine!  In this overview, we have included an executable (Windows only for now) coming.  Run vmware - vmx kvm.exe - file.vmx from the command line and your VM will launch in fullscreen with no toolbar or of any other indicator that you are running a virtual machine.

    Hello

I'm new here and I am interested in this aspect of the TP.

As far as I know some application will use some techniques to detect whether they are running inside a Virtual Machine.

So I wonder if this device can be used (or intended to be), as a countermeasure for those detectors VM, or it's just a high level feature that will just enhance the visual experience.

    Thank you!

BTW: What's new in VMware Workstation July 2013 technology overview

The VMware Workstation team is pleased to announce the VMware Workstation Technology Preview - release of may 2013!

It still reads 'may 2013 '. Do you still have this article updated?

These days, you are unlikely to be using the binary translation.  However, it is relatively easy to detect that you are running in a virtual machine.  One thing you could try is:

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE

    Hypervisor.CPUID.v0 = FALSE

This will stop the hypervisor to declare at the prompt.

  • How to get Ubuntu 11 unit interface to work in VMWare Workstation

I can't get the new Ubuntu Unity 11 work in VMWare Workstation interface.  Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running the virtual machine with 2 GB of RAM, 2 processors and 3D graphic acceleration.  I think that it is a more powerful configuration than an old laptop on which I easily got the work unit.

It still works, whenever Ubuntu starts, Gnome rather than unity.  This happens even if I have, that he set up on the logon screen to run Ubuntu (which is Unity) instead of Gnome.

It's hard to find since VMWare also uses the term of the unit. Please be clear that I am wondering about the new Unity of Ubuntu 11 interface, NOT interface of the VMWare unit.

VMware does not support what is needed to make it work in 3D and the only choice I've seen is to use unity 2D

    In a Terminal:

    sudo apt-get install unity-2d-default-settings

  • VMware switch Vlan configuration

It is possible to switch the configuration that resembles a vmware

    interface GigabitEthernet0/4

    Description calculate node 1 eth1

    switchport trunk vlan 100 native

    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

    switchport trunk allowed vlan 100, 101 102

    switchport mode trunk

    spanning tree portfast trunk

on the gigabitEthernet 0/4, I have a linux machine that needs these config.

    Thank you!

Ah, very good. Sorry for my confusion!

    Yes, you can do it.

    interface GigabitEthernet0/4

Understand and document how the switchport is connected to your ESXi host.  When you start, your ESXi host lists its physical network cards, called vmnic.  Enable CDP on your vSwitches (or LLDP if you use a vDS) so that you know how your ESXi host connects to the North.

    Description calculate node 1 eth1

You cannot configure the descriptions on vSwitches Standard (you * can * configure them on a vDS). You can also, of course, port name groups however you like, with a few caveats.

    switchport trunk vlan 100 native

The virtual switches VMware isn't exactly the notion of VLAN native.  If you want to leave the untagged packets ESXi host, you don't assign just one VLAN to that particular port group.

    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

VMware only use 802. 1 q of marking.  There is no need to explicitly configure.  In addition, you can't.

    switchport trunk allowed vlan 100, 101 102

Create a VLAN that you like on the ESXi hosts using the parameters of port group VLAN.  Don't forget not to set up a local VIRTUAL network for the port group that hosts the VLAN native.

    switchport mode trunk

ESXi hosts accept several VLANs on a vmnic out of the box.  There is no need to configure.

    spanning tree portfast trunk

This option isn't strictly for switching equipment, end-hosts as ESXi.  Your ports ESXi NIC will come as soon as possible.

  • Service using SRVANY. EXE has stopped working on Windows Server 2008 R2

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) server that runs as a service for several years a virtual machine VMware Player.  I used the SRVANY old Resource Kit tool. EXE to configure the Windows 8.1 virtual machine to load and run in the background.  This config worked without problem for years and through at least an upgrade of the virtual machine operating system.

02/06/16, I upgraded VMware Player to version 12 and later upgraded the virtual machine OS Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.  After that, the service that I created using INSTSRV and SRVANY is more years launches the VM.  The service seems to start with success (no errors), but the virtual machine does not start.  I don't see a new instance of the vmplayer.exe process when I start or restart the service.

Other changes on the Windows Server 2008 R2 server since the last SRVANY config worked were last month security patches.  I have a hard time to believe that upgrading the guest OS could have no relevance here.

To troubleshoot, I tried vmplayer.exe followed of the file name of the VMX virtual machine from a launch command line.  This works.  However, if I try to run the same exact command from a CMD, launches of VMware Player interface file, but I get a "file not found" dialog box, and the virtual machine does not start.

I also tried reinstalling VMware Player 12 and temporarily return to VMware Player 6.  None worked.

    Ideas?

  • Invoke VMScript write-progress not released

    Hi all

For the last few weeks, I'm building a deployment based on Excel-entry script.

    Basiclly to process goes like this;

-you fill an excel file with all kinds of CPU, MEM, space drive, but also if you want to install IIS or SQL.

-When you start the script, the system reads all this excel sheet cells and fills in the variable using PowerCLI.

-PowerCLi then creates the computer virtual, based on your input.

-Once the VM is created, there is only 1 file that will gets execution by invoke-vmscript.

    This line looks like.

    Invoke-VMScript - vm $VMName - ScriptText "Powershell.exe - ExecutionPolicy bypass - c:\PSScripts\StartConfiguration.ps1 of the file" GuestUser - administrator - GuestPassword *.

It's a powershell script that will make a loop through a folder containing all sorts of PS-scripts. I do this so I have a modular deployment script.

PS-scripts on the local computer virtual have writing and writing-exit courses, but I don't see them in my hand-console. The one where I started this...

When I run the on my virtual machine itself, I see the progress bar and the out.

How can I get what I see progress in my main screen to work?

Moreover, I also tried running a file (with the progress-bar,...) with vmscript invoke, but does not

    Looks like my call vmscript;

    Invoke-VMScript - vm $VMName - ScriptText "Powershell.exe - ExecutionPolicy bypass - c:\PSScripts\001-WAN-LAN_networkconfig.ps1 of the file" GuestUser - administrator - GuestPassword *.

    Hope someone knows.

    Best regards

    Dave

The Invoke-VMScript cmdlet uses the methods GuestOperationsManager to run a command on or copy files to/from the guest OS.

For this, he uses the VMware Tools interface.

In short, when you use Invoke-VMscript to run a PowerShell script inside a guest, what happens in the background is this:

    • Copy the script / command in OS invited
    • Run the script/command of the copied file
    • capture the result in a file
    • Copy the file with the output to the caller of Invoke-VMScript

The Write-Progress output is in a stream that is not captured by the above process, so you do not get this output on the side of the appellant.

On a sidenote, the Invoke-VMScript isn't a kind interactive session.

If you want to see progress on the calling station, you will have to go to Remote PowerShell Sessions.

  • Workstation 12 exclusive Mode

    Product: VMWare Workstation Pro 12

    Host: Windows 7 SP1

    VM: Windows 7 SP1

Use of the VM: SCADA HMI - essentially the Kiosk Mode

I'm looking for a way to have the virtual machine to start in exclusive mode automatically, essentially creating a kiosk environment.

I am currently deploy 12pcs industrial workstation at the manufacturing plant. These computers are currently configured as follows

    • Automatic startup and connection of the host operating system
    • Autostart and VMware mode connection full screen
    • Automatic start of the SCADA software that has built-in filtering of CTRL, ALT, Win key for OS VM

    • Host operating system use Sharpkeys to turn off CTRL left and disable the ALT right as method of obfuscation to prevent accidental exclusive mode
    • The value to hide the edge of the toolbar of VMware
    • VMs will be protected to prevent changes to VMware

If an engineer starts the system, they are asked to put the virtual machine in exclusive mode. Obfuscation prevents most operators to discover the correct method of CTRL + ALT key to take the virtual machine in exclusive mode. We can both sets of CTRL, ALT keys if necessary, but it is not the purpose of this post.

However if the user reboots the machine, which they have been known to do, the virtual machine does not start in exclusive mode, which represents an opportunity for operators interested in search or access the desktop of the host. It's not supposed to be an analysis of standard operating procedures and documents indicating the operator don't not to 'play '.

Is there an integrated method, or by the use of 3rd party software, by which we can ensure the virtual machine starts in exclusive mode?

Workaround to exclusive mode and create a nickname Kiosk Mode

    Use vmware-kvm option.

With VMware Workstation 12, you can run virtual machines with VMware KVM, which allows you to use

shortcut keys to switch between the execution of virtual machines and the host, as if they were attached to a KVM switch

By default, you will not have a toolbar. In the KVM mode preferences (run vmware - kvm.exe - preferences), you can disable the CTRL + ALT key capture, allowing you to host. Since it allows the switching key you will take care to set the key to something like F2 switch, then use a free program like Sharpkeys to remove the assignment of the F2 key on the host. This essentially locks the user in the guest operating system by trapping the F2 key to pass. You do even if you don't have that 1 virtual machine running as the default behavior is to switch to the host operating system.

There is one last caveat, Ctrl + Alt + Del is always available. It will activate the host and guest OS Secure Attention sequence (SAS). This can be bad. Never fear there is ways around this problem. Registry keys using following you can disable/remove all options on the screen Ctrl + Alt + Delete.  The user sees only a Cancel button. You may need to do this in your OS invited also based on this software is running. I use Wonderware that allows only keytrap mechanisms so only the host was necessary for me.

In this file (saved as a .reg) applying it will do the following:

For the computer Local - all options enabled (do not want to lock other users, such as recording manually as an administrator)

For the current user (assumed there is auto login user by default)

    Disable/remove the following options:

    • Hide the fast user switching
    • Disable Task Manager
    • Disable Lock Workstation
    • Disable change password
    • No logoff

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

; This disables the CTRL ALT DEL Secure Attention sequence (SAS) options

    ; anti-pop filter

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

    "NoLogOff" = DWORD: 00000001

You can also use sharpkeys turn off Ctrl, Alt, delete (6 total) function keys but you must do so within the host and the guest, and this could prove problematic.

There are other ways to accomplish this as removing the shell from Explorer to the host operating system at startup and its replacement by the VMware - KVM.exe (it's another registry setting), Ditto for the guest operating system.

  • Minimizer a VM - is - it a keyboard shortcut?

    I searched but found nothing.

CTRL + Alt + Tab don't minimize the virtual computer.

Also, I do not use Unity mode.

It's a very necessary switch for easy between the host and the guest mode full-screen.

    Here are some choices:

The Menu system on the user of VMware Workstation interface: Alt + space + [n | x]

The VMware Workstation UI, see Menu: Ctrl + Alt + Enter

Use a combination of shortcut keys mentioned above or...

Use Windows Sysinternals Desktops v2.0 and use several desktop placing your VM in one and switch between desktops by using shortcut keys.

I have created a virtual machine (PBX) on VMWare Workstation 9 and I need to move it to Workstation 7.1.  I tried to create an ovf file using ovftool, but I couldn't expand the FVO on the side 7.1.  Is there anything else I can do to move the machine to the course?

"You can just copy the file to the virtual machine with all its files, this will keep even the machine virtual UUID and MAC address if you select 'I moved' we ' when you start the virtual machine after you have copied. However, before copy on the virtual machine, make sure that you go to compatibility mode (formerly hardware version) from the 9 VMware Workstation interface.

  • Error: Access is not valid at the location of the memory - difficulty an OVA?

I have a VM that I exported an OVA as a "Just in case" backup earlier.  Today, I had to use it and I can't import.

OVA is just a file in the tar format. Find a tool that can unpack etc.

    tar - xvf Win7 - Tax64.ova

When this is done, you should see if the sha1 of the disc checksum matches the values of the MF.

Take a copy of the OVF file and edit the copy to remove the ISO. Find the element SADR cdrom and remove (delete) the "hostConnection" element that makes reference to

    the ISO in the section.

from the eggs-> eggs does not really (due to a bug, I'll try to fix for the next version). When you changed the FVO, and try the probe mode to check the ISO went from the virtual machine.

I'd keep just the two OVFs, so you have two options.

    I hope this helps.

  • OVFtool "IO Error" when .ova is extracted from 99%

I'm trying to convert a .ova into a .vmx using OVFTool 2.1.0 but after reaching 99%, I get a "IO error" / transfer drive failed, then the .vmx is deleted.

During the extraction process everything seems in good condition - I can monitor the size of the .vmx file and it continues to increase before it will be brutally deleted after that the error occurs.

Both source and destination files are on my local disk.  Here is the output of OVFTool:
