VMware tools on w2k8 r2 standard

Of in vcenter, I right click my w2k8 r2 standard vm and chose to install vmware tools.  It seems to be partially installed on the virtual machine, but it lists only the "Start VM statistics Logging" in the start/programs menu.  I do not see VMware Tools service in 'Services '.  If after trying to install it, nothing seems to happen except that it connect to the VMware Tools CD.  I have autoplay, install it and it works through the installation, but still nothing more that I've seen before.  Is there something special about w2k8 r2 standard machines to get it going?  All my other machines W2k3 and Winxp installed the tools very well.  In the summary list of all VMs in Vcenter only w2k8 machines show that vmtools are not installed.

try to uncheck display it the icon in the taskbar and then say ok, then check the icon and click ok.  This fixed it for me with a Citrix server, I got.

By default, it will do a default install. It uses standard features of Windows Installer, then to install all available components of VMware Tools, use the ADDLOCAL = All option in the command line.

  • VMware tools automate following a judgment?

    HI guys,.

I'm currently updating of tools with a restart with the addition of the vShield driver using the automated installation with these advance options

    /S /v "/qn REBOOT = R ADDLOCAL = REMOVE ALL THE = Hgfs, WYSE, ThinPrint.

What I would like to know if there is in any case told stop instead, I think not that this is possible with the standard MSI arguments but I'm wondering if PowerCLI could do?

As far as I know, you're right, the judgment can be done in the MSI parameters.

But you can control the entire process from a PowerCLI script, and you can stop the virtual machine when the update is complete.

    • Install the VMware Tools installation with the cmdlet Mount-Tools files
    • Run the upgrade through the Invoke-VMScript cmdlet
    • Stop the virtual machine with the Shutdown-VMGuest cmdlet

You think the restart after the upgrade of the tools.

If you let reboot happen, view agent service will take place. Maybe it's something you want to avoid.

There are several ways to achieve this:

    • Before you restart, set the startup type of the service to the people with reduced mobility
    • Disconnect the network virtual computer. You can always restart and stop the virtual machine and you can even execute scripts/commands inside the BONE of the virtual machine with the Invoke-VMScript cmdlet

    Hi team,

I cloned (copied the entire record of this virtual machine via scp copy) a virtual of Vcenter Vcenter 5.0 4.1 machine. But after turning on the machine (in Vcenter 5.0), is to show VMware tools are running up-to-date. Can someone please explain to me how I can install VMware tools for this virtual machine.

    Thanks in advance,

    Sisi.

    No,

If you use standard options, vm will automatically update the tools and do a restart.

If you do not wan´t to automatically restart the virtual machine, you may use the interactive update and open a console on the virtual machine.

The CD of tools will be automatically mounted to your virtual machine and you could install the tool manual.

  • Impact of VMware tools on dvSwitch

I am currenlty working on the conversion of an environment of a bunch of standard switches to a dvSwitch.

I have tested dvSwitch and I'm ready to start the migration of virtual machines.  I noticed that there are several virtual machines that do not have VMware tools installed.  I'm assuming that migration Assistant virtual machines using VMware tools when the network switch.

Do I have to install/upgrade VMware tools on all machines before migrating the dvSwich most?  Is it possible to not do this?

It is a 24 x 7 environment that has only 4 hours of window of maintenance once a month, if the weather is very very difficult to find.  I know that install vmware tools requires a restart, because he was such a 5.0.x environment.

    Thanks for the tips.

The condition of the VMware tools will not affect the migration to a VDS. The migration feature changes basically just group for the vNIC port assignment. It may be a slight loss of network connectivity when you migrate, worth perhaps as much as a single network ping, but it's normal.

Looks like you already know this, but once you get your environment set in place with the version of VMware 5.1 tools it will take not more it recharges when you upgrade tools.

    Any suggestions?

I have no problem with installation/update of the VMWare tools for other Windows guests that I recently installed.

Verify that the checksum MD5 or SHA1 of the file windows.iso in the working directory of VMware Workstation is as indicated below.

For version windows.iso of VMware Tools file 9.2.2.894247:

    MD5 = 8d9a47fddf3988bb1fcb62bb21d3fa8f
    SHA1 = 6a55b0d276a3442589d6a4892fa8759e8ca42712

These values have been generated, based on the extracted windows.iso file of Tools-windows - 9.2.2.exe.tar should be the same one included in the WS 9.0.1 installed.  Note: The checksum SHA256 for the file windows-tools - 9.2.2.exe.tar has been verified against its value published prior to extraction.

  • Installation of VMware Tools default Chinese

Hi, I've migrated just a Windows XP computer in a virtual machine on merger 4.1.

Works fine, except that when I try to uninstall software that is no longer needed by using the Windows Add/Remove programs of standard tool, all dialogs are in Chinese. This happens for some software to uninstall, but not others.

I guess I blame that on the individual software programs, except that the dialogues were all in Chinese, also when I tried to install VMware Tools.

I guessed the meaning of the different choices during the installation, choose 'Typical', and the tools are installed and I restarted Windows.

Now that dialogue tools boxes are in English, but every time I click the button help in the Tools dialog box, the help files are all in Chinese.

I found a similar problem posted at http://communities.vmware.com/message/1859046#1859046, where the poster creates an image of Win7 using its installation media rather than through migration of an existing computer. The solution success he had to re - run the installation without using Easy Install. Unfortunately, the migration of VMware tool does not offer me the possibility to use or not using any method of easy installation.

Someone has seen this before, or have any ideas?

    Thank you

  • VMware Tools installer location on VirtualCenter or ESX host

OK, so I know the standard way of installing VMware tools on a virtual machine is using the ' Install/Upgrade VMware Tools' when it is connected through the VI Client.  Using this feature, I'm sure that mounts a sort of an ISO file or the image of the virtual machine where the installer can then be started/launched.  Anyone know where I can find this ISO file or installer, specifically for Linux guests?  What we try to do is to get the installer for tools, so we can store somewhere else.  I hope someone can help.

    Thanks to a bouquet.

On an ESX race you can find them in:

  • Snapshoting a virtual machine (Windows or Linux) before a upgrade VMware Tools as a precaution

Our company has standardized on the use of VMware snapshoting than a level 1 to save uninstall mechanism possible to issues related to the updates / patches.  It works very well for Windows updates on our Windows guests, as well as the updates I YOU on our Linux guests.

My question is if anyone thinks that there is a risk associated with the use of this process to guard against a possible problem that might occur after an upgrade VMware Tools.

The process would be: Patch ESX host, migrate a guest to host newly patched, instant, prompt, install VMware Tools update, restart, test and certify, delete the snapshot.

Since you're snapshoting a system that has an older version of VMware Tools, it's a bad idea to rely on this snapshot in a recovery scenario?  Use the VMware Tools as part of the process of snapshoting a guest?

Thank you all for any advice you may have!

    Matt Heldstab

Yes, you can snapshot before the upgrade tools and come back if something don't jive.  To take it even further, you can snapshot before the hardware upgrade of the v7 and return to v4 if it does not work.

Seems like a lot of works well, but it does not offer a good backup method.

  • VMware Tools: VMware Tools don't is not supported on this operating system

On one of our server VMware Server 2 (Version 2.0.2 Build 203138 (Linux version)), I made a new standard of Windows 2008 edt. Comments of 32 - bits. When I try to install the vmware tools, I get the following message: "VMware Tools is not supported on this operating system. When I check the setting guestos vmx file indicates "longhorn." Someone knows how to fix this?

You can always get the windows.iso manually and see if you can install the tools.

    First, make a snapshot!
