"VMWare Tools: unmanaged" is displayed on the summary VI Client.

Hello

I'm building a Virtual Appliance using VMWare Studio 2.0, with Ubuntu 8.04 - 1 as the guest operating system. This unit will be certified 'VMWare Ready'... If all goes well...

The problem is the VMWare tools are reported as "Not run" in the client summary VI. Anyone know if this is acceptable? What are the downsides to it being 'unmanaged '? VMWare tools that were installed were the default values for this particular os guest, who are the open-vmware-tools.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

As the author of the test VRVAP matrix / guidelines, I am happy to answer:

"Unmanaged" is a valid state for VMware Tools and indicates that some other mechanisms that the classic "interactive/scriptable" VMware Tools installer engine is responsible for maintaining components ' tools '.

It's what I expected to see most of the new virtual appliances, subject to the evaluation/validation via the ready program virtual VMware.

Usually the State "unmanaged" is triggered by one of the three cases:

  • Open VM tools

  • VMware Studio 2 supplied with OSP

The salient bit is at the end of the TC 2570 VMware Tools - General.

The basic set of operating system components invited side feature called "VMware Tools" MUST be present, activated and functioning properly. Additional information defining this requirement are covered in case of test 2571 by 2579. The version number and compilation VMware specific ABI to use Tools are not prescribed.

For some reason VMware Tools is not installed correctly (for example files from previous versions are left inside the hard disk).  So I have to do a manual cleaning before you reinstall the tools.

No idea why this is happening?

I'm certainly not asking someone to solve the problem of the application, but what on earth could possibly VMTools change that would have caused this? Thanks in advance!

If this is what is causing the problem?

I'm sure of it - about 99.9% Yes.

And if so, what changes would affect a particular software feature licenses?

"All the virtual machines have a hardware version, which shows the characteristics of virtual hardware that supports the virtual machine, such as BIOS or EFI, number of virtual slots, maximum number of processors, the maximum memory configuration and other features material." - from http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/compute.html

They probably linked the license to an individual (or several) attribute of the "hardware" of the virtual machine. Think of it regarding a physical system - changed nothing in the operating system (at least not GUID, MSN, etc.), it was something that the operating system has access to related material. You could probably bug them enough and get them to reveal madness method they use for this, but I don't know if it would be really useful. You can leave virtual to older material , to some extent, which means that you can reduce the number of times you have to repeat this process.

  • Is it possible to prevent the VMware Tools to try to reach the update server?

I'm under 8.0 on a Win 7/64 host.  I usually install tools in a virtual machine that has no network connectivity.  When I start to install the tools, he's trying to connect to the update server to check if it is current.  Is it possible to have tools simply boot and install and not try to connect?  Thank you.

I don't have a VMware Workstation 8 running at the moment, but IIRC the update settings can be configured in Edit-> preferences.

  • Upgrade to 4.1 VMware tools 8.3.2 cause the print spooler restart

I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

After having modernized our guests from 4.0u2 to 4.1, I improved the tools on my virtual machines.  The next day on the virtual machines Citrix PS4.5 users had tons of printing problems.  These servers also had poor performance and restarted thoughout the day because the constant spooler restarts chess CPP triggered.

The solution was to remove the tools from these hosts and re - 8.3.2 vmware install tools 4.0u2 (4.0.0 build 261974).  All other virtual machines seem to be fine with the new tools of 4.1.   (I also tried to remove just the fine print of the 8.3.2 driver tools without success)

I report to VMware Monday and post what they say.  I just wanted to see if someone of another running Citrix or Terminal Server VM has the same issues.

    Thank you.

We had similar problems of VERRRY as you did and resolved in this article:

We had problems with Server 2003 Enterprise with 8 GB of RAM (so using the/3 GB switch in the boot.ini file) our Exchange 2003 server.

This machine works now head and shoulders all the rest - we're still testing the rest of our virtual machines to ensure they remain stable after changing the CPU/MMU virtualization settings.  So far so good!

I really hope that helps you!  14 hours STRAIGHT was devoted to this, including yelling, throwing objects, cursing vmware etc...

  • The purpose of VMware Tools in a Linux guest?

There are benefits to install VMware tools in a Linux without head/command line only VM?  The only things I see it adding would share his IP address info.  Are there features that I miss out on by installing do not?

Indeed, as the RPM and tar from the instructions in file ends with "Start X Windows", it seems that it is not designed for anything other than the GUI (for mouse tracking/display setting enhancements)?

With VMware tools, you can make things easier. For example, you can do 'clean shutdown' of the machine virtual of ESXi, or synchronize the time between ESXi and VM. I'm not sure but I think that vmware balooning pilot would need tools to work correctly.

But you can still live without vmware-tools and perform all of the above tasks (although not as easily). Personally, I don't use vmware-tools with linux-VM as modular kernel is not permitted in our society.

  • The Installation of VMWare tools failed. In any case to force the update/install VMWare tools?

I used to use VMware Workstation 10 and recently upgraded to VMware workstation 11.  However, whenever I try to install a newer version of VMware tools, it will fail with message saying something like "VMware Tools can be installed in the Virtual Machine.

Yes, I am trying to install VMware Tools within the guest operating system, but I get this notification for all my virtual machines, I'm running.

I'm under 6 Virtual Machines simultaneously and they run on Windows 7 32 bit OS and configured with 4 GB of RAM, 1CPU, 100GB HD + 5 GB second HD for the swap file, NO printer, no sound card.

For each virtual machine, I changed about 50 + key of Windows registry and detect the values to hide from all the programs that they are running on the virtual machine.

I assume due to records, I changed, it confuses VM installer who it is not running on a Virtual Machine.  Then I tried to change all these registers changed to send it back to the original value, yet I is always the same message.

I must be missing either some registry values or values that I restored is false. But I don't know which is the case.

I can simply delete all my Virtual Machines and start again with the new virtual machine, but I don't want to repeat this process whenever a newer version of the VM tools out. and installation of windows and search and replace registry values for each virtual computer is full of works.

So, here is my question.  Anyone know how to force the update / install VM tools in my virtual machine?

P.S. I added under scripts in the file .vmx for each of the virtual machines.  I don't think it would cause the problem but just in case I include it.

  • How to launch and use the VMware tools

After installing 2008r2 as a virtual machine and install VMware Tools, I am unable to open the tools and use them.  I did two days of searching, and I can't find an answer to my problem.    Downstairs is an action I took, but I would appreciate any help from the community.

    Purpose:

Laboratory at home training and certification.

Hardware environment: (based on "Chris Wahl" home Build Lab)

    SuperMicro Motherboard MBD-X10SLH-F-O

Intel Xeon E3-1230 v3 3.30 GHz processor with 32 GB of ram

    Software environment:

64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, host operating system

VMware Workstation 10 with all updates installed with administrator privileges

    VM #2: vSphere 5.1 install

VM #1: The Windows 2008R2 VM I have a problem with VMware tools.

I've deleted and rebuilt the two VM three times now, thinking it was my environment somehow.  ESXi 5.1 works although I have not built anything there yet.  I am able to access this part of the laboratory fine of vSphere Client.

    VMware Tools:

Within the Services of VM 2008 I can see VMware Tools started service, the icon in the system tray notification area and see the files on the C: drive of the virtual computer, but there is no way to open it.

I followed several links to create a virtual laboratory, but should not be this hard to run a program.  It's my first time that you try to use VMware tools, but I'm following the steps in the lab below install procedures.

In the middle of the page of "Blog Editor" part 4 "build the ultimate vSphere Lab is where it installs the VMware tool and lowest after restarting Windows Update service I'm stuck to the next step."

"Open VMware Tools, go to the Shrink ."  Click on the button of the prepare to shrink . »

?  How to "open the VMware Tools?

Now on the path I have searched for and deleted and reinstalled the tools, but always without success.

Here is a link where I found the following measures to be taken, but it doesn't work either.  The "NOTE" at the bottom, it's something I noticed and made sure was right when I installed the last time tools.

I even found a link to where you can download the tools separately from the ISO files, and yet, it does not work.  A LITTLE HELP PLEASE!

    http://www.vdsyn.com/Windows-2008-R2-virtual-machine-VMware-tools-shows-not-running-current-after-vmotionsnapshot-operations-randomly/

So next step that we did was
1 uninstalled VMware Tools in the virtual machine
    2 restarted the VM
    3. manually deleted/renamed the C:\Program VMware Tools
    4. manually deleted/renamed C:\Programdata\VMware\VMware tools
    5 Rebooted
    6. install the VMware tools
    7 Rebooted

The issue is not reproducible after the same

NOTE: Make sure that the virtual computer CD player points to the correct image.  I found it always go back to the windows 7 iso image on my C: drive from physical machines to where the image 2008r2 was on drive E:

No need to reinstall again. You're not missing something. VMware has changed the VMware Tools tray and removed options that were available in previous versions. Take a look at for example experience front of VMware: The VMware Tools GUI is gone - now what? with some information about this change and the replacement of the command line.
