VoIP provider said disable firewall SPI, which is safe?

Hi all

I have recently (2-3 weeks ago) changed my router to a Linksys BESFR41 wireless WRT120N-related.  I started having problems with my phone voip service - it was OK for 1 year - and after a repair with support, they suggested to disable the SPI Firewall.  They say that the SPI Firewall is known to interfere with voip.  By disabling the firewall I do my very precarious network?  If so, what other choices are there?  Should not worry about this?

TIA

Hello

To cut the short story - even if I had dealing with this for two days-, it seems that my router firmware has become corrupted.  I was on a call from a technician level 4 support, and it suggested that I update the firmware and perform a full reset.  Once this done, everything seems back to normal.

Thank you for all your help.

I have to disable firewall to connect to the Internet. Also pop-up windows to make a dial-up connection, but we have a 2 connection wires to broadband?

    Help!

    Hi Barry,.

MSE is not the cause.  I suspect two things.  One, some ports in the firewall must be enabled to access the internet (your ISP should be able to tell) or you use a wrong port which is not activated, while the is correct.

Second, you set up like a dial instead of a connection to the local network through the router (which must also be configured and secured if there is no wireless capability), and then the LAN must be connected to the internet.  Essentially, your network configuration is incorrect and must be corrected.  As a general rule, all you need to do is contact your ISP technical support and if you walk through the process over the phone.

That's how I would handle it because even the experts here is perhaps not able to determine the appropriate settings for your ISP gave your versions of Windows and brands of routers and modems (and everything that needs to be connected).  They lose your business if you can't connect, and they have people who simply as for a life - often 24/7 - they are generally useful and really good in this.

If that doesn't work (and I bet than that), and so that I could take you through it here in general with more information about your hardware, OS, ISP and other, this is the wrong forum for this.  You start here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/networking?page=1&tab=all&tm=1300700638376.  Near the top, select your operating system from the drop-down menu to access the appropriate forum for your system.  Then post here like you did here, but give them all the details (manufacturer, brand and model of computer, network equipment, your exact version of Windows, what browser you are using and your network configuration).

    Good luck

  • A person of so-called security from Microsoft called and said my firewall did not work and had an ID # and asked me to do certain things is - this legitimate?

A person supposed to be Microsoft called and said my Firewall Security Center was not working and had an ID # they said was my ID of computers that he read out to me and that I have no idea whether or not this is the ID.  They wanted me to be in front of my computer and asked me to do things and wouldn't continue until I started, I started to do what they asked which of course I did NOT! I requested a call back number, and that's what he gave me:
1 855-731-4936 and his name was Fred Watson, was not American speaking, very strong foreign accent.
    Is - is this legitimate?

Its a scam.  A well known and long-lasting.  Microsoft will never ask you for personal information (they already have them) and you never call cold.  Nor do they send messages of anti virus - and they do not have to connect to your machine.  NEVER allow anyone to connect remotely to your machine.

They are the partners who do this nor Microsoft does not only

  • RV082 disable firewall remote management AND

    Hi all

    I have a RV082.

I need to disable the firewall because the firewall is done better elsewhere.

However disable firewall management remotely over ip wan is on emphatically.

I don't need remote management, keep it activated is a security risk for my setup.

I don't understand the reason for the choice to enable remote management with force if the firewall is disabled.

Is there a way to disable the firewall and remote management?

Or at least a workaround solution?

I'm on firmware 2.0.0.19 - tm on a probably v2 hardware. (Impossible to find this info in web configuration).

It's not the newest even for hw v2 but I can't afford to break it trying to update the firmware.

In addition no release notes for versions of firmware refers to a correction of the behaviour of management of firewall / remote.

Is this behavior also in new versions of firmware?

    Gabriele,

V03 material has the same behavior. Possible workaround:

    turn on the firewall;

Disable: SPI, back, Block Wan management rem.

and remove any custom access rules (restore default rules).

It has stopped working. I thought the problem was iTunes so I've updated to the latest version of iTunes in Vista, then update to Vista and then install Windows 7 and then last iTune on Windows 7... I now have everything that the most recent and it still does not work. I have not the firmware on my router can be updated, but I think it's fairly new

There may be a setting on your router you can disable IPv6.  Try this and also disable IPv6 on your NIC again.

  • NEW PAP2T-NA: having problems with call with a VOIP provider, but not another

What I discovered, that's the problem, if the incoming call is answered, then after the end of the call, she can immediately accept a new call; Otherwise, if the incoming call is not answered, and then after the caller hangs up, the ring on the phone to the ATA will continue for a few seconds, and even after the stop of the ring, dial the number will get a busy signal. This State (gettting busy tone) will last more than a few minutes, before it can accept another call again.

I tested the same line with another VOIP provider and no problem with this provider.

Is that mean that the problem is with the first VOIP provider? What could be the cause?

    Thanks in advance.

Finally confirmed that there is a problem with the VOIP provider. The problem has been solved now. This solution requires some setting side PennyTel (VOIP provider).

  • The free AVG antivirus program disables the Windows Firewall? Is it safe?

I have Windows 7.  After you download the program AVG free anti-virus, the Action Center tray icon will display a warning indicating that the Windows Firewall is not enabled. After checking the Windows Firewall settings in the Control Panel, this message appears: "Windows Firewall is disabled or badly adjusted upward.  If I click to re - turn on the Windows Firewall, the center of the Action WARNING disappears.  I don't think that there is a firewall that is included in the free version of AVG.  Is it safe to leave the Windows firewall stops?

No, it is not without danger. You should have a firewall running. A firewall running on the PC, such as WIndows firewall or a firewall on your router, or preferably both.

I don't use AVG can not tell for sure re its features recent firewall, but at the time where I use it on an old PC it doesn't have a firewall in the free version.

Which AVG have you loaded, AVG9, 2011, 2012? and where did you?

You can test your firewall here (or similar sites) click https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 go ahead and run the common ports to test (at least). If the firewall is running ports report . If they bring or then it is not running.

  • Disabled Firewall - now starts like new computer

Based on a recommendation of the Apple Genius Bar, I disabled my firewall.  It took about 20 minutes and then says to restart when he did.  When I rebooted, it starts as a new computer asks me to select a language and then restore from time machine, reinstall the OS, etc.  When I use disk utility, it shows the data on the disk, but it shows it all as "Other" instead of Photos, Audio, applications, etc.

Fortunately, I made Time Machine backup before I did.  But do not want to do if I can't because the other problems can result from what I've experienced.  Especially since he is a corporate company computer and not mine.

Why even get and can I pick up some way or I have to go through the process of Time Machine?  Thank you.

Well, obviously, I'm OK now.  I tried to reboot several times, but he kept taking me to the Welcome screen again as if it were a brand new computer.  Then I tried to restart the menu Apple in the upper left corner and who took me in the sequence normal start for my computer.  I rebooted several times now, just to make sure, and it does everything correctly again.  Not sure why restart that way makes a difference, but it was apparently the case.

BTW, the guy from Apple's Genius was correct. My computer is used to take 3 + minutes to start.  Now, after you turn off the firewall, it's less than 30 seconds.  Also stop is too way much faster. I understand the additional security with firewall, but I think worth it to turn it off.
