  See if it is hidden. From the main screen hold down your ALT key, then click on an icon and choose Show all. See if you see your profiles icon then. If you do just ALT + click on it and uncheck Hide

  Alternatively you can try to reset the theme. Go to Options | Theme. Of in this screen, press the menu key, and then choose Reset default theme.

  I don't see the volume icon in the taskbar.

  I tried to turn it on, but the option 'Show icon /notifications' doesn't show any icon, just the plain text

  This isn't portable problem, but your system is confusing upward.

  My volume icons disappeared from the notification (lower-right) area and I can't adjust my volume levels of my office (I have to go to the control panel every time).  When I right click to change the properties of the notification bar, the box next to volume under the "always show icon" is not Hi-limited and will not let me choose to always display of the volume icon.  What can I do else?

  Volume missing from the status bar icon. I tried properties - system icons... turns on and off but the power button is grayed out and will not change. Also tried to select Notifications.   It was with my installation of XP.  I have to open the Control Panel, uncheck the 'show' in the task bar (or system tray, whatever it may be), hit apply, then re - check and apply again.  It should appear. For a period of time.  Also started happening with my battery/power icon and the same solution worked for a while, but now it works again (just for the battery - the volume still works like that).  I had found some registry changes, but they do not seem to have worked.  Any comments would be useful.  I still have to run this laptop sometimes.
