Volume slider does not work in video games / other active windows?

I'm sure I'm not the only one having this problem, but after a lot of Google search, I can't find another topic that deals with this problem.

I have a DV7-2185dx (Windows 7 64-bit) and it has the bar of the volume slider which works fine most of the time. However, if I play a video game in a web browser (usually executed under Flash), I can no longer adjust the volume with the bar. I have to go to the taskbar to change. This happens in some other video games full-screen (which means I have to leave the game to increase the volume). It also happens with YouTube; If I click the video to pause, or to skip forward/backwards and play again, I can't use the volume slider, except if I click outside the video window.

I guess my question is this: is there one way other than the bar or the taskbar to adjust the volume? Or any way to fix this problem?

Update:

I just discovered that this is apparently only a problem with Firefox. I can adjust volume in flash games and YouTube in Google Chrome. Still not sure of any way to solve these problems with Firefox, but it still lets you know who.
