vSAN/vSphere upgrade 6 - 6U1

Hello

Recently, I have invested in vSAN and have a cluster 3 running on to Dell R720xd (vSphere Essentials with no DRS). I want to upgrade vSphere Update 1 6 and want to make sure I don't break anything as vCenter and Update Manager are both running in the cluster vSAN. My current plan is:

  1. Upgrade VCSA
  2. vMotion virtual machines off-host 1
  3. Put the host 1 in maintenance mode (ensure this accessibility mode)
  4. Clean up the host 1 - Reboot
  5. Take the host out of maintenance mode 1
  6. Return original VMs host 1 host 1
  7. vMotion virtual machines off-host 2
  8. Put host 2 in maintenance mode (ensure this accessibility mode)

and so on

This do the job and make sure that nothing bad happens to vSAN and be the least hassle? VSAN will automatically be on 6.1 once the definitive host is upgraded? I'm more that happy to have full downtime and power all virtual machines down if it minimises the risk of another host goes down while the 1 host is in maintenance mode, but of course only plan to have each host in maintenance mode for the duration of the updates and no more.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I think you have it right.  I probably wouldn't shut down all virtual machines during the upgrade, I would do this upgrade spread, as you have outlined.

As far as I know, you'll be on vSAN 6.1 with the upgrade of the host.  It is however, and upgrade to the file system.  It should be a few clicks away in the Web user interface.

From the release notes, VMware Virtual SAN 6.1 Release Notes: new format on disk. Virtual SAN 6.1 supports upgrades to the new file format virtual disk 2.0 via the Web Client vSphere. This file system based on the newspaper, based on technology Virsto offer highly scalable clone and snapshot management support cluster virtual SAN.

Thank you, Zach.

  • EQL / VSM / MEM / vSphere upgrade order

    Hello

I see now that v8, MEM 1.3 EQL and VSM 4.5 have been released as EPA so I can upgrade to vSphere 6!

Is there an order of upgrade recommended for all of these components?  I guess EQL v8 first, then the environment vSphere, then MEM, then VSM?

I think I read THAT MEM 1.2 was not compatible with vSphere 6?  If this is the case, I guess I have to switch to the RR before upgrading vSphere and then apply 1.3 MEM?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

I agree first of all of the firmware on board.  Remove the MEM, then upgrade vSphere Server v6 then ESXi nodes to v6.0.  You can do MEM or VSM in order any at that time.

  • Issue of license associated with vSphere upgrade from 5.5 to 6

I want to improve my environment to vSphere 5.5 to 6.

I have several ESXi servers and 1 vCenter server. Some servers ESXi serving direct environment and a test environment.

I want to upgrade, step by step so, install the new server vSephere and upgrade test environment 6.0 ESXi servers. and then run a few days test environment.

Upgrade needs, I need to convert the license keys to 6.0.

Can I run then simultaneously the two environemts two or three days? (living environment using license keys 5.5 and 6.0 keys environment converted from 5.5 test keys)?

Some key ESXi are used in several ESXi is used according to CPU sockets associated with these keys.

Believe me, it does not, it may seem, but you pile up errors for later.   It would be a better option to generate a vCenter 6 in eval mode and go that route.

The upgrade of the agent vSphere is transparent.

You can lose the remote management of vCenter for a short period, but the virtual machines on that host will work without interruption.

  • cannot add the new hard drive more than 2 TB on vsphere upgrade 5

can someone give me a clue? I can't add new greater than 2 TB drive to my vm on my upgraded vsphere 5.0. My data store is 6 TB and already read by vsphere... I create new virtual machine and add the new drive, but it limits again just 2 TB when I change 4 TB, the error message will appear. I recently added my datastore LUN with VMFS5 version. is there a any mistake I made? Please help me this problem is so frustrating me... i need to create new disk 6 TB to my new file server

    Hello.

You will need to use a RDM in physical Compatibility Mode to achieve. As weinstein5 said, a VMDK cannot be greater than 2-to-512bytes. You can use the OS to spread over several 2 TB-512bytes VMDK, if that's what you really want.

    Good luck!

  • Question on Vsphere upgrade from ESX3.5 update 3

We currently have our VCServer and race, but I'll be upgrading for Vsphere 4.0 Update 1. To do this, I need to build a new server, because our current server is not compatible with the hardware requirements. First of all, is there an easy way to migrate the settings from one server to another? Also the networks I will build as my local lan and my dmz, network adapter settings, etc... be there when I take my guests on the new Vsphere server. Are the specific server VC parameters or appearing in ESX boxes themselves?

    jkoelker wrote:

So since I only change my virtual Center Server and without changing the physical material of boxes ESX but upgrading from 4.0 I still need to worry recreate all my settings. Depending on your position, the parameters are all specific to the ESX boxes and not the server Vcenter himself? I read that correctly? The only thing that happens is my Vcenter server. I'll put as the utility to update on what will update my esx boxes and Vsphere.

If you do an upgrade to ESX4, so yes all the settings will be retained.

I was under the impression that you have been rebuild the ESX host, that would be my choice of the upgrade.

  • vSphere upgrade and v - lan

Currently, we have a few load VLAN defined in the VIC, would be the upgrade to vCenter needs of special procedures to preserve these support VLAN so that my VMs will be still available after the upgrade. Or passage from ESX3.5 to vSphere needs of specific procedures for preserves these load VLAN so that my VMs will be always would be available after the upgrade. People new installation vCenter installation of the upgrade of the VIC? If we install fresh the vcenter, what would happen to my support of VLAN. What happens if we want to do a new installation for vSphere, what would happen to my support of VLAN.

As you can see, I'm quite worried on my load VLAN thanks for help.

A new install of ESX4 (i) would be exactly that.  You have to re-create all your networking and VLAN settings on the hosts once again.

  • To manage in vSphere upgrade

I just upgraded my VC to vSphere server... I have a single host ESX 3.5 running under VC.  Can I upgrade this ESX4 via the Update Manager? This will affect anything? given that the host is connected to our existing SAN... Thank you.

    > I have not yet to any ESX 4.0 host.

Then migrate all virtual machines to other ESXes, 3.5 and 4.0 are fully compatible and can work together in the same cluster if you use virtual machines with hardware worm. 4 only.

I want to install on a local hard disk and run VMS on the SAN.

If you are running 3.5 HD local - UM will be updated to 3.5 to 4.0 and it will run from the local HD is not question where you run VMs of.

  • Parallel VSphere upgrade?

    Hello

Just looking for advice - we have vCenter 2.5 and 2 ESX 3.5 U3 Clusters, with one ESX host that is licensed for Lab Manager, 3 other guests are in the other Cluster running our production VMs. I want to 'upgrade' to vSphere, but I leave the old VirtualCenter and configuration Lab Manager intact. In my view, this means that I have to install a new virtual machine for vCenter 4.0 and then perform a new installation of vSphere 4.0 on each of the other 3 hosts? My question revolves around the SMV Production. I think it's the way forward:

Turn off the virtual machines of Production and disable DRS / HA

Remove all virtual machines in the vCenter inventory Production

    Put the ESX 3 hosts

Install vSphere 4.0 on the same host. Import DC. VMs build vCenter 4.0 VM. Create a new data center, Cluster etc. Install vSphere 4.0 on the remaining hosts, add to the Cluster. Import all virtual machines of Production and give them to the top.

I think not upgraded vSphere the VMFS partition so that must remain intact? I need to improve VMTools on each virtual machine, and then upgrade the hardware of the virtual computer to version 7. Am I missing something or is at - it another way to maintain Lab Manager and always move our Production environment vSphere 4.0?

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hello

I think it should work if you are installing a new server vCenter Server and deletes the hosts of the former and then adding them to the new.

You must install the update on a new virtual machine Manager and use it to upgrade the hosts.

No problem with the vmfs, they are intact.

You must upgrade all VMTools but wait a bit before upgrade you virtual hardware.

Too long, you keep the material on version 4, you have the procedure to return to version 3.5.
