vShpere/vMotion processor compatibility

I have a 4.1 vSphere/ESXi four node cluster with 4 servers with processors Intel Xeon x 7550 and we are looking to add/replace a server that has a processor Intel Xeon E7-4850.  What I see in the Mode of VMware EVC section my cluster, it seems that the new server would be allowed in the cluster.

I would like to know if we would be problems with this configuration.  I don't see anything that would suggest, we should not add this server but if someone has experienced something different please let me know.

Thanks for your help

Sean

VCA is already enabled in the cluster? If so what is the level of reference VCA?

The following base line will work for you. 7550 and E7-4850 are supported by all three.

Intel® generation ' Merom'

Intel "Penryn" generation

Intel 'Nehalem' generation

    Hello

only, we have installed a new esx server and now when I try to do a VMotion between my first esx Server I get an error, the incompatibility cpu ecx mask etc...

I found the CPU compatibility matrix but I don't know that I understand... so I want a confirmation, please if my proc is compatible for Vmotion.

Here are the 2 processors, Intel Xeon E5450 and Intel Xeon X 5650

If it's not compatible what should I do? wait for a new version of Vcenter/vsphere? I actually use Vsphere/vcenter 4.00 update 1

Thank you for answering this question!

You said you have two hosts E5450. So why not Vmotion virtual machines to a host and then move it to the new cluster. In this way, you will see that it works or not.

  • HA Cluster and vMotion CPU compatibility

Will be the following servers and work of the processor all in a HA Cluster with ESXi embedded 4.1 with vCenter 4.1 vSphere?

    Reference Dell 2950 III Xeon E5410 @ 2.33 GHz

    Reference Dell R610 Xeon X 5550 @ 2.67 GHz

    Reference Dell R710 Xeon X 5650 @ 2.67 GHz

Or will I have to activate the VCA Mode on the Cluster?

Is there a chart that shows you what processor works in a HA Cluster and vMotion?

You need a CPU mask on the VM vCenter migrating to the EVC cluster and adding one would require a reboot.  You can do instead.

    (1) create new cluster with appropriate VCA setting.

    (2) (2) migrer migrate virtual machines from one host, put it in maintenance mode and then move it to the new cluster.

    (3) stop vCenter.

    (4) connect to the host that was running with the vSphere client vCenter.  Unregister the virtual machine.

    (5) connect to the host in the new cluster, to save the VM vCenter and turn on.

  • VMotion CPU compatibility: Intel Xeon 5150 and 5450

    Hi all

I have a client that has the following servers running ESXi 3.5:

IBM x 3650 with Intel Xeon 5150 (to two cores)

IBM x 3650 with Intel Xeon 5450 (quad core)

I think that the two processors are not compatible VMotion. What are my options?

    1. enable CVS?

    2. hide the CPU mask in vCenter?

    Help, please. Thank you.

As long as you use Virtual Center 3.5 Update 2 or later version, then you can update CVS.

  • VMotion CPU compatibility - blades HP

    Hello

I know there are plenty of posts about this, but I'm kinda stuck none-the-less. I have 10 servers HP BL460c G1.

    (1) two running Intel Xeon L5420 UC and ESX3.5

    (2) two running Intel Xeon L5420 UC and ESX3.5 U4

    (3) four are running Intel Xeon E5420 processors and U3 ESX3.5

    (4) two running Intel Xeon E5420 CPU and ESX3.5 U4

The first four servers (1 + 2) above are all the same (they got the same partcode of HP and have been purchased together). (3) four are all the same, have been purchased together and have the same HP Partcode. The last two (4) were purchased after the other blades, but are the same Partcode of HP (3).

    Sorry if this becomes confusing.

Can I VMotion between all servers except the last batch (4). Can I VMotion between these two servers, but try to VMotion to or from these machines (4) for all others (1, 2 or 3) goes down, with the following error:

  • vMotion CPU compatibility

Please can someone tell me if it is possible to warm vMotion between a host computer with 2 x 2.00GHz dual core Intel E5335 CPU and a second (not bought yet until I can answer this question) with core quad 2 x X5560s?

    Thank you very much

    Stu

There are two options you can try:

    1. change the virtual machine-> advanced-> CPUID-> option and select Hide flag NX and migrates the computer to see if it works.  (Make sure that no other device is mounted to something like .iso) requires powering down of the machine to change.

2 activate CVS on your clusters, but this will require your guests to be power off as well, so to work around this problem is standup new cluster that has active CVS then disconnect the virtual machines and register for the new EVC cluster.  (this will method will not require downtime)

  • Dell precision t7500 dual processor compatibility.

Hi, I have a Precision t7500, currently with a single Xeon e5620 @ 2.4 ghz Quad core 12 MB of cache. With 32 GB 2x16gb 10600 sticks of RAM.  I just bought a 2nd processor, Board Assembly, heat sink and fan. Can I use one of the sticks of ram in each processor card? Also, could I use a combination of different processors? That would be an improvement recommended along the coast the Xeon E5620?

    Thank you very much.

Edit - P.s. A new installation of windows is necessary?

Read pages 17-19 in the Manual on the installation of RAM on the motherboard and riser for the dual CPU configuration.

Unfortunately, 32 GB of RAM is not a configuration supported with two processors, even if it is compatible with a single CPU configuration. So, you may need to purchase at least 2 x 8 GB of additional RAM to run two processors.

And note RAM must be double rank (DR) for use with two processors.

    Hi all

    I'm making reference to this document: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1991

Requirements of VMotion CPU compatibility for Intel processors

We have four servers BL460c G1 (Xeon 54xx CPU). I want to buy two new servers to replace 2 we have in an offbeat upgrade. The new servers are BL460c G7 (Xeon 56xx CPU).

In the above document, our current processor is part of Group C. Our new servers fit into Group E. There are instructions of compatibility vmotion for vMotioning fast between the groups C - D and D-e... but I need to know if I can vMotion the c.-e. group. Is this possible, or what I can not vmotion?

    Thanks for your help!

  • FT/HA/vMotion compatibility

    Hello

I hope that the forum does not mind this strange issue. I tried to continue my learning of vSphere and ESXI installed on a white box with i7-2600 machine, on the Intel H67 chipset. Everything works

I would now like to add a second esxi host, practice FT/HA/Vmotion. I intend to stick with the i7-2600 for the processor, but my question is, the motherboard chipset should it be the same? I have to stay with a motherboard that is H67?

    Thank you.

    -MN

    Hello

Shorat response is "no, it doesn't have to be the same.

    Slightly longer answer is:

For HA, it shouldn't make any difference if it's the same or not (mother or processor card). For FT, and vMotion processor count.

Although FT and vMotion are apparently completely different one from the other, FT is possible with vMotion, so, the first thing to do is to understand the vMotion compatibility.

The "only thing" vMotion to be is (apart from a shared storage, network connectivity, etc.) East of compatible processors between them. You can have a look on this

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1003212

    and this

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1991

As you will see, processor questions and where you do not have the same processor, then you should play a little with VCA.

This is a compatibility table for EVC and the mask, you need to use in case you want to use two different processors

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1003212

And in case you want to learn a little more about all these (basic knowledge), you can take a look in this doc.

  • Quick vMotioning problem between two servers HP BL460c Gen 9 when EVC enabled

I have two HP BL460c Gen 9 blades configured exactly the same thing with 2 x Intel XEON E5-2660 v3 processors in each of them. Both running the same version ROM (I36 06/05/2015) and running the same version of ESXi (5.0.0 build 2509828). They are managed by a Server Build 2656067 vCenter 5.0.0.

When I configure these two servers in a cluster with EVC disabled I am able to vMotion between them. However, if I activate the Intel EVC modes so I am unable to vMotion between these two identical servers.  Here is an example of the message that I get when I updated Westmere VCA mode

Host CPU is not compatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register

    Bits of the host: 0000:0010:1001:1000:0010:0010:0000:0011

    Required: x 110: x01x:11 x 1: 1xx0:xx11:xx1x:xxxx:xx11

    Inconsistency detected for these features:

    * General incompatibilities

If I disable CVS, then I can vMotion VMs between them.

I wanted to add these hosts to an existing cluster configured with EVC Westmere mode so that I was able to vMotion between old and new guests, but was unable to vMotion VMs off the new hosts, even if I tried to vMotion to another new host.

Configure a new cluster with only these two new hosts to so I could experiment. I can only vMotion between them if CVS is disabled. I cannot further increase the VCA mode on this new cluster, for example of Westmere to Sandy Bridge then I have virtual machines under tension within the cluster. For example: I put the VCA mode at Westmere, feeding on a virtual computer, when I go to change the CVS to Sandy Bridge mode I get the following message, I should be able to increase the VCA mode but may not lower it

The cluster cannot be configured with the selected Enhanced vMotion

Compatibility mode; The CPU features disabled by this mode may be currently in use

by slot voltage or suspension of the virtual machines in the cluster.

I get this message even if I try to set the VCA mode at the same level, that it is already.

Anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Hello

Seems, your CPU supports 5.0 ESXi and vCenter 5.0, you must upgrade your vSphere vSphere 6.x for the VCA.

See the links below and also compatibility VCA matrix attached:
