vSphere 5.0 - Cluster Storage Chassis mounted - HA behavior?

Hello together

Edit: I cut a few lines to make the issue a bit more general.

In this case, I focus on the scenario where two data centers get partitioned.

In the case of the link LAN & CF will fail at the same time (DataCore) will not be able to deny access to any of the sites, both sites will have a functional storage.

How will be vSphere HA respond?

For now I guess:

-vSphere 5.0

-Datacenter A master HA

-Only A datacenter has an active gateway

-vCenter server resides in the data center B

-Yes, this isn't a vMSC support solution

Data Center has

Data Center B

  • The master in A datacenter will recognize that slaves hosts of datacenter B stopped sending heartbeats.

  • Will expire the data store heart rate data center B guests

  • Captain HA still receives heartbeats of his servants in A data center network

  • The master in A datacenter will declare all datacenter B as dead hosts

  • The master will restart VMS protected data center B
  • In datacenter B hosts will recognize that the master data center has stopped sending heartbeats.

  • Slaves will elect a new master

  • Because all data center B hosts receive traffic election they trigger a reaction of isolation

  • The new master will verify the poweron file and the protectedlist (or it will be contacted the vCenter server) to obtain the necessary information on virtual machines

  • The master will restart VMS protected data center A

Is this even possible or I missed something, and I am completely wrong?

In the case where the vCenter server is running in A data center, the new master elected at least could use the protectedlist and the file poweron, could it not?

With vSphere 4.1 it should also be possible in case there is at least a main node in each data center?

For the moment, I see no solution to stop that from happening (without losing the flexibility of a vSphere cluster) but not using a remote storage not supported "cluster"?

Concerning

Patrick

I don't know DataCore well enough to say anything on this subject from a storage perspective, but it seems that what you're saying is that in the case of a partition of site / half brain data warehouses will be 'active' on both sides?

If this is the case then your assumptions are true and the results could be disastrous.

Not sure why you would use a solution like that to be honest. I sure hope they have the notion of "bias of the site" / "site preferences".

  • VMware Vsphere HA (problem of storage in common) and problem of band network bandwidth

    Hi all

I am setting up VMware VSphere HA on ESXI 6.0

I have 5 hosts running, each host has 2 management networks main network 1 vMotion and 1 network card for balancing with the management network. (each NIC 1Gbit uplink)

I also attached to each card a FC (Fiber Channel) connected to HP 3PAR storage.

each host have 1 TB or 2 TB Fiber Channel-attached storage.

When I was setting up the AP he stated that he did not have any shared how storage can I allow other hosts to see each store data as a shared storage. NB: when I go vsphere client to web I see all the storage of each host.

I also want to allow FT on a virtual machine, I have also a problem of bandwidth insuffisent or something. .

also, I enabled fault tolerance on each NIC attached to the host.

also another question: should I export volumes (LUNS) to all hosts in the AP? (in fact I exported each volume to each host separately) for example:

    Volume 1: HP3PAR_ESX1 exported to HOST ESX1

Volume 2: HP3PAR_ESX2 exported to the ESX2 HOST

    Volume 3: HP3PAR_ESX3 exported to ESX3 HOST

    .. .etc

can you me clear on this issue or guide me to where I can solve these problems please.

When I try to activate the FT on the VM I the following warning attached

This message was edited by: coolirc attached image FT problem

There are memory FT requirements compatible VM is through two virtual, primary and secondary computers. so it will consume the same amount of resources of both ESXi hosts.

VM with 10 GB of RAM allocation, turn on FT booking VM is now 10 GB RAM, so 10 GB + VMkernel consumption General host running primary VM and same amount of the host that is running with secondary VM. on top of this admission control in support of the failures of host we are going to tolerate so say primary VM host fails, then secondary VM becomes the new primary and triggers a new high school to be created and powered in one of the other host survivor in your HA cluster but which will be successful only when you have sufficient resources available to satisfy a reservation.

your source host has 16 GB of RAM and one of the destination host also got 16 GB of RAM, so if you try to activate pi after disabling admission control on your cluster policy, I think that it should allow you to activate FT without errors. [if it still does not work so if possible, turn off all other virtual machines for free resources or to try to reduce their reservation manually if they are running with a reservation and try again.]

with admission control, the necessary resources would be even higher.

screenshot of Cluster summary reports that you have 4 guests in it and the memory resources available about 30 GB to 60 GB total memory. But isn't always the right figure, if you go to the monitor-> book resources, is where you will find actual "ready reserve", it's the right amount of reserve memory that you will be able to use across several virtual machines, you run in your cluster.

I tried 2 vCPU vm FT in vSphere 6, works very well, but never tried with Hardware version 8, in your case, your virtual machine is hardware version 8, although I'm not sure if it is mandatory to have the hardware version 11 VM for FT so ideally it should work, but virtual hardware version if possible vm upgraded to 11.

vSphere replication doesn't support MSCS, see: KB VMware: vSphere Replication FAQ

vSphere replication does not work with virtual disks open mode "multi-writer". Virtual machines MSCS cluster are configured with virtual disks open mode "multi-writer", so vSphere replication will not work with MSCS configuration.

  • VSphere 4.1 / Cluster Split Vsphere 5.0

    Hello

We upgrade to vSphere 5 However there is one critical application that is not supported on vSphere 5.  That's why I was asked to investigate the possibility of running a cluster HA/DRS with vSphere 4.1 and vSphere hosts 5.

I realize that this configuration is not ideal, but we don't have enough resources to afford dedidcating a crowd of vSphere 4.1 to perform this unique virtual machine.

    1. first off, correct me if I'm wrong, but vSphere 4.1 cannot run VMs with hardware VM Version 8?

    2. next, then virtual machines that are running on vSphere hosts 5 and are running the latest version of the VMtools vMotioned on hosts vSphere 4.1?

3 are there other concerns, that you can think of running with some hosts on vSphere 4.1 and some on vSphere 5 for long periods of time?

    Thank you.

    1 - OK

2 - No, don't update the tools to version 5.0 if you host esx 4.1 hae

3 - 4.1 and 5 mix pretty easily if you're updating of tools, and you are not using hardware version 8, you have already mentioned above.

  • MS ESXi 4.1 cluster storage paths

does anyone have any experience of MS clusters and the loss of manipulation of storage paths. I am doing a project to migrate from a storage Fibre path at a time. We note that MS clusters do not tolerate the loss of paths during storage migration (there are four paths). It is a cluster of SQL 2008 R2. While checking the settings, I found that the strategy of selection of the path is alternating. I found research that round-robin, is not supported on MS clusters (separate hosts). I guess that my first job will be to change the strategy of selection of the path on the physical RDM. I could change the PSP to the path fixed (active/inactive V7000 SAN), using the vcenter client. From what I see, this can be done without stopping the virtual machine? Change the PSP will improve resilience? I could switch also the cluster a virtual machine that is in a different case for the change in storage, to reduce the impact.

From what I see, this can be done without stopping the virtual machine?

His trunk to change RR to fixed during execution. Whereas it is set to MRU is not recommended.

    Ref: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1011340

Change the PSP will improve resilience?

It depends on the recommendation of the storage provider. We have to learn the PSP recommended for your storage vendor or VMware HCL. It varies from the version of ESXi.

    http://www.VMware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=base&deviceCategory=San

For example: FIXED (VMW_PSP_FIXED) is recommended for following Eualogic iSCSI sotrage PSP.

    Type of table: iSCSI

  • Add the VSA Cluster storage

    Hi all

I read somewhere that its does not seem possible to upgrade the size of storage for the cluster of VSA in ver1.0? For example, if install us with HDD 6 and thereafter wanted to add another hard drive 2 or more to enlarge the data store, it is not possible?

It looks like the poster others updated the link to the correct article KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2001339

VSA 1.0 does not support add more storage to a VSA cluster after installation. You cannot add additional hard disks to the ESXi hosts and you cannot add multiple members of the cluster VSA. Make sure that your VSA cluster has enough storage to meet your needs of environment before you install the cluster VSA.

To increase the capacity of its VSA 1.0, you must re-create the cluster.

  • vSphere Eval question on storage

    Hello

I have 4 servers to assess vSphere and here's what I have to work with, where I am and my question on storage.

3 HP DL380 G5 servers with 8 GB of ram each and 4x146GB discs

    1 HP DL380 G6 Server with 12 GB and 3x146GB, 5x300GB readers.

I installed ESXi4 Server G6 with two data warehouses, Go first, 268, second 1.09 TB.

I intend to install ESXi4 on the other 3 machines and have vCenter

The server that is running under VM on two servers.

    Now to my question.

I'm not a tradional SAN device. I have a lot of space, however, if you add up all the disks on the 4 servers. How you prefer to use

existing hardware, I have to install a configuration compatible HA, vMotion and DRB.  Again, by using the 4 servers with the

current hard drives installed.  Can I create a virtual SAN using the disc on 4 servers? I think I understand the delivery of two virtual machines

vCenter on 2 separate servers running in a reasonable way?

Thanks for any help. My first attempt trying to configure ESX/Vsphere.

    Kind regards

    Paul

StorMagic www.stormagic.com has a free virtual SAN for vSphere.

You can create up to 2 TB per ESX with the free license.

You should be able to test vSphere (HA, DRS, vMotion)

However, I don't see that FT is not fully supported.

  • Storage shared between cluster hosts

    Hello

I have a number of hosts managed under a VC server clusters. I want to downgrade the ESX 3.5 cluster and spend all my virtual machines to my vSphere cluster. I intend to move the storage currently used by ESX 3.5 clusters as well.

Is this OK (or supported) or even possible for me to do the following?

    1. attach the storage used by the cluster cluster vSphere ESX 3.5 (so it is folded in TWO clusters).

    2. the servers from ESX3.5 to vSphere vMotion cluster cluster.

    3. turn off the cluster of ESX 3.5.

I guess it boils down to two questions.

    1. can you be shared between host cluster storage two?

    2. If you can, is it possible to vMotion between cluster hosts, assuming that all the vMotion compatibility checks are successful?

If the above is not possible, I'm guessing that a V2V of VMS ESX 3.5 would be the way to go, and I have to find new storage for the cluster of vSphere.

    Thank you

    G

    Hello

If you have a SAN vSphere-taking in charge, so there is no problem.

According to the CRA on your 3.5/vSphere ESX CPU hosts, you might have problems with storage vmotion/vmotion. One way would be to enable CVS, however requiring all virtual machines to be powered off.

But present the LUN 3.5 4.x guests and make a svmotion is not a problem if you have taken care of storage. (www.vmware.com/go/hcl).

Then you can just vmotion (if you do not have CPU incompatibility) virtual machines to new hosts, or stop and move.

  • Commissioning in a storage DRS cluster?

It seems that all the predefined workflow and action scriptlets for VM provisioning requires a specific available data store in.

  • Best survey practice: tiering with different types of storage drives

    Hello

We recently received a new SAN Equallogic, and I am deciding the implementation. Our first unit (currently only one member in a swimming pool) is a PS4100 with 24x600GB 10K SAS. The new unit is a PS4210 with 12x4TB 7.2 K NL SAS.

Should I leave units in separate classes in the same group and cut new LUNS? Should I add the PS4210 in the existing pool and use the Storage Tiering?

I'm a little hesitant to how Storage Tiering will work, I read a little when the mixture of types of disks, storage tiering will be balanced on the ability, and most of the i/o load will hit the higher capacity of SAN.

Any contribution is appreciated. The storage is used for the storage of data VMFS with vSphere 5.5 cluster. Run EQL firmware 8.1.0 on both units.

    Hello

Either will work.   As a general rule, speaking of small members 10K / 15K mix with very large 7.2 K members RPM can reduce the effectiveness of the fastest disks.  As more data on the largest Member.  This is especially true if they carry the same RAID type.

I would start with them in their own pools.  Later, you can merge two pools quite easily.  The other way is more complex.  Since you need to remove a member, leaving the data in the original pool.  Then you can move volumes of the new pool.

Also, please check Dell TR1091.  It explains how to configure the storage w/EQL ESXi.

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../Download

A small change that has not been added that TR is the NOOP_TIMEOUT value.  The document shows you how to change the LOGIN_TIMEOUT value to 60.  In this menu is the NOOP_TIMEOUT, which gets the value of 30 seconds.

Finally, make sure that the virtual machines themselves are configured with their disk values set on 60 seconds Timeout.

With the EQL Firmware download is a PDF entitled ' iSCSI initiator and optimize your SAN environment for high availability of the OS considerations "which explains how to make the necessary changes.

    Kind regards
