vSphere API, PowerCLI... on free ESXi, vCLI, vMA

Hi friends:

Is there any script tool for ESX (vSphere API, vMA, vCLI, PowerCLI,...) available in the free version of ESXi 4.0?

Thank you!

You can use vCLI but most of the commands are not available without at least Essentials license.

  • Details on the VMA for free ESXi and ESXi 4.0 to 4.1 upgrade

    Hi all

I recently did a upgrade to ESXi 4.0 U1 to ESXi 4.1 (and before doing so did not noticed that MAS will be more usable in 4.1). I wanted to just make sure that there is currently no way to using VMrun to automate the decommissioning and snapshot and reboot of the Guest OS on ESXi 4.1 and that there is not just an error in my code?

I work for a non-profit and my budget is tight at best (around $150.00 USD) per year for this project. My only choice is to roll back to 4.0 U1?

    Brent cordially

When you say vMA will be more usable in 4.1, what do you mean by that? If you have upgraded to vSphere 4.1 and you want to use vMA, then you must download the version 4.1 of vMA compared to version 4.0.

If you are referring to the license "bug" to VIX, VIX releases allowing yet it works on ESXi free is VIX 1.6.2 but the problem has also been fixed on the side of ESX (i) of things from 4.1. If you rely on this feature, you can return to 4.0.x.

That said, you always have the option to use the Busybox Console (Tech Support Mode) to manage and perform various host and virtual machine using vimshoperations, it works with both a licensed version and free ESXi as the commands are executed within TSM and this could be an alternative without having to demote ESXi

  • What are the free ESXi / 5.1 vsphere Hypervisor hardware required / restrictions?

Situation: I'm going to update a few web servers where I am currently under the free version of ESXi/vSphere 4.0.  When 5.0 was released, I decided to not look at new versions of VMware because of the restriction of vRAM and either run an earlier version or something.  I came across a post that says 5.1 license was different and stopped by the page 5.1 and read this http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere-hypervisor/requirements.html who actually reads differently.

Questions: am I correct in my understanding of the restrictions for 5.1 are:

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

    Thank you!

PS: If the only real limitation is now 32 GB RAM virtual, VMware made a good shot.  I'm not the skin to VMware, so I think that physical 32 GB is perfect.  There is still only so much you can do in the 32 GB, but there is not the complexities of licensing.  The restriction of vRAM was impassable.  Server purchase is unnecessarily complicated by restrictions of socket and core.  This means that I could buy a standard speed core 8 or 10 cheaper XEON or use an older multiprocessor machine instead of an expensive high-frequency 6 core with hyperthreading.

    1. 32 GB max RAM PHYSICS?  (It's a big change from 32GB vRAM).

Yes that's right FREE esxi supports maximum 32 GB physical RAM can only

    2. no limit on the number of CPUs or cores?  (This is a big change of physical processor 1 up to 6 cores max.)

No Yes No limit on physical CPU or cores

    The following error:

    Error string: error. RestrictedVersion.summary
    Lack of details: RestrictedVersionFault

you are using the version free ESXi, which is fine, but you cannot use the LCIs to automate tasks unless you have a paid license. It is a restriction of the CLI/API, you must have a paid license to access these two write operations. When you use the free version, you can only 'query' or reading the API, but you cannot perform write operations.

  • VSphere API is available in VMware vSphere Essentials Kit?

    Hello

TL; DR: I would like to know if the vSphere API is available in VMware vSphere Essentials Kit.

We evaluated VMware vSphere to build an environment very small test & dev to work. Since vSphere worked well during our assessment, we will buy vSphere licenses.

We only need to operate a single ESXi host and we don't much care our virtual machines because they are used for testing only. Thus, we don't need features such as vMotion.

However, take us pictures and we depend on the vSphere API, because we use pyVmomi to administer our virtual machines.

Because we only run an ESXi host, need for API vSphere vCenter but did not need features such as vMotion, I think that the Kit Essentials fits our needs. But I'm not sure it provides the vSphere API. If anyone can confirm?

    Kind regards

Yes, vSphere API are available in the Essentials kit.

  • Impossible to use 5.5 free ESXi?

    Hi guys,.

I have a question. I want to use ESXi 5.5 my free license. I downloaded the installer and install it on my server. But whenever I want to connect via vSphere, I get a message that I left the 60 days for the activation of ESXi, otherwise it will not work.

How can I use my license key, so that my server can work more than 60 days?

    Best regards!

    Hello

    It is a normal behavior.

Now you use a license in evaluation mode (all features enabled).

When the 60-day trial period is over, all licensed features will be disabled, and certain tasks (for example on and off the virtual machines power) will not be allowed.

Then, you change the evaluation by a license license free esxi, before the 60-day evaluation period expires.

  • No more free ESXi?

    Hello!

I thought the ESXi Hypervisor was free, so I downloaded ESXi 5 and installed on a server rack-HP-.

The only way to manage a guest operating system is to install the vSphere Client and he says it's only a test 60 days.

I thought maybe it is the customer who is on triel vSphere, but when I look at the ESXi, he also says "trial".

Y at - it a sort of free ESXi or should I buy?

Without the vSphere Client, how to manage comments-OX? In CLI?

    RS

It is only valid for vCenter.

You must follow the instructions for a stand-alone article KB André related license host:

To allow a standalone ESXi 5.x (vSphere Hypervisor):

    1. Connect to the ESXi host with vSphere Client.
    2. Click the Configuration tab.
    3. Click licensed features in software.
    4. Click change in the appearance under the license tab.
    5. Select assign a new license key at this host.
    6. Press enter and enter the license key.
    7. Click OK.

  • Nested Vrsion Eval of ESXi 5.5 free ESXi

OK, I'm playing with the advanced features of ESXi and I want to install a nested eval version of 5.5 ESXi in my free version of ESXi 5.5. Do a little research, I did the following:

    • Install VMware ESXi 5 on a physical host and configure networks, storage and other aspects as needed (already have this race successfully with other virtual machines running)
    • Configure a vSwitch or port group for the active Mode Promiscuous
    • Log Mode of Tech Support (ssh or ILO) and do the following to activate tweak nested 64-bit clients
      echo 'vhv.allow = "TRUE"' >> /etc/vmware/config

In addition, I went to the tab my 5.5 ESXi VM options and is went to the CPU/MMU virtualization and tried both using Intel VT - x settings when I installed. In both cases, I received a warning when installing ESXi that she would not support 64-bit virtual servers. When I pressed forward in any case, I wasn't able to create a computer virtual using Windows 2008 R2 64-bit.

    So my questions are:

-J' read somewhere that you may not be able use nested virtualization with the free version of ESXi. Is - this true/not true?

-If you can make nested virtualization with free ESXi then what am I doing wrong? What are the settings to make it work. I wonder if I'm missing something.

    Thank you

This parameter is required for ESX 5.0.  It is no longer necessary.

    Not true.

  • Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?

Can I use SE Sparse files in 5.1 free ESXi?  I want to use in order to avoid the current process to clean thin VMDK.  I read the article of Hogan vSphere 5.1 storage improvements - part 2: rare discs SE and it seems to indicate that it is only for the desktop view.  Here is How to create a floppy SE Sparse (footprint) in vSphere 5.1 shows it is possible, but speaks only the Web Client, which, from what I can tell, is not available for ESXi and have vCenter Server, which is not free.  If I'm missing something here, please let me know.

    Thank you!

Sparse disk feature is not limited and should work fine in free ESXi, however the only supported way to use it is with VMware View.

There is no way to support (or simple) use SE Sparse without view at present.

  • Assessment vs free ESXi

Hello... I hope you can help, because I am pulling my hair out, running around in circles trying to understand this.  I know that VMWare would like to 'sell' things, but they announce a hypervisor VSphere/ESXi 5 'free '... HOW to get the free version - or at least a key to activate/register it?

I went to http://www.vmware.com/go/get-free-esxi/ and follow the guests (I have both connected to an account, I got back to version 3.5 AND created a new job - both with the same result), got ESXi downloaded and installed, but I get a pop-up from the client saying that my assessment has 60 days to the left and click on a link to assign a license.  On using the link, we wonder again at connection, now that I am presented with a registration page.  After completing the registration page, I gives me information on my assessment.  I don't have listed in my VMWare license keys (although I've seen initially a key when first present with my download link)... only an assessment with links on EACH page on how to 'buy' VSphere.

How my free VSphere become only a test and evaluation?  Where can I get a free license for VSphere and how to assign a free license to my VSphere host?

Sorry for the frustration - I would really like to test the waters to implement VMWare to our datacenter upgrade, I've heard great things on this subject, but at this point what does say that Microsoft licensing is WAY easier than VMWare?

    Thank you!

In the vSphere client, click on the server.  Go to the Configuration tab.  Choose "Licensed Features" (to the left of the pane, under 'Software').  Click on "Edit"... "(top right of the pane).

  • Question so that the migration of the VM using the vSphere API

    Hello

I am having some problems during the migration of a virtual machine using vSphere SDK.

I have install the vSphere environment as there are two hosts esxi installed on different physical machines with multiple virtual machines above them.

Now I want to migrate one say the virtual macines VM1 fron host1 to host2. I did it via vCenter uses the vSphere client and it worked fine. Now, I have to perform the same task using the vSphere API. For this I use the template of "VMotion" located in the com/vmware/vm directory. I run the command as follows:

targethost $ run.bat url username password, shows targetpool

I'm not sure of the targetpool argument and I need advice on what I need to specify a name of pool of resources here. Acorrding to:

    http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/VC-SDK/visdk400pubs/ReferenceGuide/Vim.virtualmachine.html#migrate

If the pool parameter remains disabled, current pool of the virtual machine is used as target the pool. I tried specifying the pool of resources such as:

    [- targetpool]

    but it gives the error:

Error: List of resources target not found.

Looking forward to all the advice. Thank you.

Even if you do not have resource pools, it is actually a 'root' list of resources"which will be still exists. Try to specify 'Resources' as the name of the targetpool and allow you to migrate your VM.

  • Very quick question on the free ESXi license

Sorry this post as I have a related thread opened yet, but:

Free ESXi 4.1 vSphere license allows access to San fiber channel?

I ask because I am frustrated by is denied access to something that worked, and the only change I see is that I entered the license key last week. I spread the material, there must be setup somewhere.

Again, I am really sorry to post a new thread, but I need a quick answer, I need this system in place and running as soon as possible!

    See you soon,.

    Gargravarr

Yes - all access to storage etc will work always - it is only 'Advanced' features that are limited.

  • Can you connect free ESXi to Vcenter?

Probably a simple question, but I don't seem to find a clear answer.   I have an environment Vsphere with Vcenter 4.1 and I recently had to load the free ESXi on a single machine just to run 2 virtual machines on a single server.   I was wondering if the free license allows the management with Vcenter server licensed.
