vSphere / space recover / SAN replication

Hello

In my business, we have two groups (Dell PS6100 EQL) SAN with replication configured on each volume of a group of SAN. Sometimes we move on recovery of space on a specific volume of SAN.

To do this, I need to disable replication on that volume, I execute the recovery of space on a host ESX mapped and then I reconfigure replication that will create a new set of replicas (with a full copy of first).

During this operation (depending on the size of the volume, a few hours), if something goes wrong on the volume of SAN, we lost VMS hosted on this volume, because the first line has not yet been created.

I could keep the replica set before disabling the replication, but the target SAN does not take into account the new volume size... I also thought about the replica cloning before neutralizing him (and destroy) but it will take a lot of time...

Someone at - it another idea to protect data when I proceed to a recovery of the space?

Thanks in advance

Hello

You are welcome.

Re: Clone.  Yes, creation of the clone is very fast, no matter the size of the volume.

Re: Clone replica.  Yes, it will remain if you remove the replica set.

You can do it yourself (as everyone else used to do many years ago), to a product like dbvisit which is popular in this space (never used, but I heard good things about this). Hello

Great topic, I'll try to summarize all this in a post.

I have worked with HP EVA for a few years and I must say that I have used many of the features of replication - HP EVA Business Copy (local replication) and HP EVA continues access (remote replication) as well - for the oracle database and other applications as well. Most storage systems use copy-on-write to create two points in time of the LUN (snapshot) image or clone LUN using cow again.

Of course, like other people, said earlier the replication SAN is block based, in the same way with Dataguard, you have synchronous and asynchronous replication. When your data is written to the data files it usually goes in storage cache and then is pushed down the disc as soon as it will be more efficient, at the same point, replication is pushing data to the Dominican Republic. The same way with Dataguard if you use synchronous replication that you won't get you "speedy return" until the blocks of primary storage has been written for DR storage system.

I never had problems with replication to be honest. I used a lot of copy of databases of production using local replication. For example if you want to quickly test a patch on the production system, you can create a snapshot that will only increase with the amount of changes you have made. The only concern is nowadays though we use ASM so if your diskgroup names are the same in DEV that the PROD does not work the approach that I mention.

Regarding remote replication - because you do not have Dataguard more every time you failover to the Dominican Republic to your database will pass by instance recovery!

Regardless of the type of replication is not the speed but the latency of the network - SAN or Dataguard, you will always have a penalty of a long replication distance. The biggest typical WAN latency factor is the speed of light, via fiber optic cable, which is about 124 miles per millisecond. Based on that you can calculate what would be the round-trip latency time.

Indeed for many people SE installation choose DBvisit Standby to manage their databases on hold. I did the installation of the couple and it is really simple and works out of the box. However, your RPO depends on how often you switch your redologs and how many times you ship them to the backup site. You must configure dbvisit to spend with each log file (all the 5,10,15 minutes) OR configure archive_lag_target to configure OR use both at the same time. Also, you can store a copy of the archivelogs on a separate location just in case, for example, an NFS share.

And finally my five cents on RAC on Clusters of extended - be careful with this one. Each of the nodes in the extended database cluster need access to both storage (primary and DR) systems. You must also third location to store a voting quorum disk, usually an NFS share. It is also very important to note that the latency between the nodes is of crucial importance due to global cache activity.

  • SAN replication vs VMware SRM on?

    Hello

I wonder when should we choose as VMware SRM on the owner SAN replication method?

for the moment, I see a plan of the DR site that would be well if my production environment data can be reproduced by the SAN in the DR site.

    Thank you

SRM is nice, because it gives you a a (wonderful) DR failover button

Of course, the disadvantage is the cost and the fact that once you have switched, you will need to reconfigure to backspace.

SAN is generally cheaper (because the assumption is that you should replication stoarge for SRM anyway), but requires scripts on measurement or manually export and import of virtual machines to operate. It's also a bit harder to work around the question if your VLAN don't is not strained between sites and if the INVESTIGATION period.

If you're used to the script thouhg, it shouldn't be a problem, so your decision simply come sdown to ease of use, cost and skills,

Personally, I scripted before and would take the same approach again (even if the SRM is a very good tool) - but I think it is different for a lot (more) like not everyone a) the script, b) trusts their scripts.

Finally, if you pay someone to adapt, it will be easier to understand what is happening with MRS with a bunch of custom scripts and SRM allows 'dummy runs', which scripts cannot do.

Good luck and post with your final word please.

  • SAN replication for fault tolerance

    Hello world

I hope that someone could point me in the right direction - it seems that I do not have enough review in the subject and the deadlines are too tight for me to explore different scenarios in depth...

We have two data centers a few miles of each other connected by 100 Mbps link. Each datacenter will have 5 blades BL490 with ESX Standard accommodation about 50 VMs. ABC message a HP eva4400 SAN with SAN replication implemented. VC will be the first data center and the two data center are networked.

SAN replication is block-level, so it seems that I can not just replicate changes, but all entries will have to be replicated. This should not be a problem because the link can support about 1.8 TB a jouret of data can be buffered.

I am not however a vision how recovery would work in this case. We don't need instant recovery, I would say that 4 hours of recovery time is accepted if SRM fancy Automatic as DR scenario would not easily be accepted financial reasons, but your comments are welcome.

Current idea is the following: replicate LUNS of primary site to the secondary. When disaster strikes, personal COMPUTER turns on the ESX host on the remote side and connects replicated LUNS, and then registered VMs and change my IP address.

I understand that this seems horribly manual process and I'm pretty sure I missed some obvious pitfalls here.

Could someone let me know which direction should I go? An article on the subject?

This is a new installation and we prefer to put in place the basic recovery process and resize it later. I just need to have a good direction to allow this scalability.

I thank very you much in advance!

I think you have a good understanding of how it should work it is something I would like to implement, but use Veeam as support for replication. Here's what I would do for the IP addresses of the virtual machine. I like to keep the same IP addresses because I know that not every simple VM uses DNS for all of its applications, databases, etc. So unless you are POSITIVE you covered all the basics of your DNS, I'll try to use the same IP addresses. You just work on the part of this routing before start you your virtual machines. So make sure that when switch you or test your virtual machine failover, you make sure that if you have a virtual machine with the IP 10.10.10.10 with two Datacenters A & B, the routing would ensure that all your customers cannot talk to the datacenter B until you do this active way. In this way, you can test your failover

    Hello

Need help to replicate Microsoft cluster at 2 knots.  I know that vSphere replication is compatible with virtual RDM so will change to virtual RDM physica, but the controller SCSI ROW of nodes have buses sharing (Physics) is enabled. How to reproduce these groupings with SCSI bus sharing enabled, since vsphere replication does not support sharing of bus

Thanks, waiting for some thoughts/work around

vSphere replication doesn't support MSCS, see: KB VMware: vSphere Replication FAQ

Is VSphere replication supported MSCS clusters?

vSphere replication does not work with virtual disks open mode "multi-writer". Virtual machines MSCS cluster are configured with virtual disks open mode "multi-writer", so vSphere replication will not work with MSCS configuration.

  • register the vsphere with vcenter new replication

    Hello!

For some reason, I lost my vcenter vm managing vsphere replication. Now, I installed a new machine of vcenter and want to register this replication with vsphere vm. Is it still possible? and how to do it?

I get this error in vra ' could not get the SSL certificate: Bad server response; is a vCenter server listening on the given host and port? "by clicking on save and restart the service.

    I use version 5.5.

    Thank you!

    Hello

Short answer - no - VRMS depends on the managed object ID values that are specific for each DB vcenter.

    You will need to:

    1. turn power off and remove the current device of VR.

    2. remove all the hbr... files in the target data store files (copies of the config files, redo logs, etc..).

3 deploy the new device of VR on the new vCenter server.

4 configure replication from scratch, by reusing the existing hard core files in the original initial target data warehouses.

  • SRM 5.1 does not detect the existing unit of vSphere 5.1 independent replication

Installation guide 5.1 SRM said that RS can operate the vSphere replication stand-alone version:

" If you installed the stand-alone version of vSphere replication 5.1 then installRS 5.1, all existing twinning and replicas are immediately accessible thanks to the SRM user interface"

    http://pubs.VMware.com/SRM-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.VMware.SRM.install_config.doc%2FGUID-E8859207-0D9D-414e-8A2A-CEAC0FCA76A3.html

However, MRS. 5.1 does not detect it.  When I go to the page of replication vSphere in SRM, it seems that if no VR device has been deployed, as if she still wants deploy me them to SRM.

How do you get SRM 5.1 to detect the existing VR device and all of its repetitions?  Thank you.

    Hi Mike,.

SRM 5.1 requires a separate VRMS and VRS. If you deploy VR 5.1 5.1 SRM and do not use an existing independent RV unit, you always deploy a single device (which contains a VRMS and a VRS) which is ready to use without any additional configuration. MRS allows you to deploy one or more additional VRS for load balancing purposes, but it is completely optional.

So, normally, it shouldn't matter if you have installed VR 5.1 as stand-alone unit or if you have installed since SRM 5.1. For all purposes, that's exactly the same device. Have you tried you are looking for RV in vSphere Web Client rather than in MRS. interface? If vSphere replication does not appear in the Web Client, then it could be that the VR device is is not registered with vCenter Server or RV service does not, which could be due to a network problem.

If RV is displayed in the Web Client vSphere then VR runs correctly and the problem is indeed with the connection with MRS.

    Thank you

  • Box rectangular weird replaced the white space of san Serif

I opened a pdf file that's used to have a serif text normal san, but now there small boxes square for spaces of each space. The text comes out good, but it's the white spaces that arise in square characters. Most other fonts do not have this, but some others do it as well. Here's a picture of him:

    Please help me.

I don't see that one very well in the format jpeg, but you have many beautiful choices to try. Maybe start by Myriad Pro, which should have come with ID, or a Helvetica or one of its variants, if you (it's a classic without a face). Gill without or Frutiger are also nice to look at, but less likely to be installed on most systems.

I'm sure you have many other options installed on your computer. Without serif means simply the police have no tails little embellished on the ends of the lines, and you can probably spot a number of samples when you scroll through the list. Give one a try and see how it compares to a better readability and and the number of characters per line. And others that your teacher requirements, if any, there is no reason to not choose a font serif instead if you wish. No time like the present to take a look at a guy and decide what YOU like.

  • SAN replication and presentation remote problems

    Hello

We have this from HP software running and replication of our logic unit on a remote site number.

I cut the replication and presented the remote disc for the ESX servers.  I restarted the server and no storage is displayed.  If I click Add storage it is able to find the logic unit number and sees this correctly however if I followed through it tells me to format the drive.  Anyway to get the disk scan and add the virtual machine in?

    Thank you!

    Carl.

If the LUNS presented to the remote site are differnet that ESX hosts you can then change the LVM. DisallowSnapshotLun = 0 and then perform a new analysis that will allow you to see the number of unit logic without resignaturing it. You can then navigate to the vmx and enter.

You can also change the LVM. EnableResignature = 1 which will be will the LUN requires the UUID in the vmx be changed prior to registration, the name LUN will be something like

    snap00x-LUNNAME

The LVM settings are located under configuration host - advanced.

  • SRM vSphere possible replication or SAN?

    Hello

Just curious to know if you can configure the replication SAN with the SRA to who is matched (1 site, Site 1DR) and then also configure Replicator Vmware for SAN systems who don't not have built in replication.

Is it possible to install?  Let me know?

VMware and vSphere replication port replicator?

Use vSphere replication, you must deploy the unit of replication vSphere on each site, and you can use the same server of MRS. along the coast with SRA.

Combined based on the Bay and vSphere replication of the limits of Protection with SRM

With MRS, you can run groups of protection based on the Bay alongside vSphere protection groups on the same SRM Server replication. However, the total number of protection groups cannot exceed 250. For example, you cannot create 150 groups of protection based on the Bay and then create 250 vSphere replication protection associations, because this creates 400 total protection groups. If you have 150 groups of protection based on the Bay, you can create an additional 100 vSphere protection of the replication groups, for a total of 250 groups of protection.
