VUM - vCenter Update/upgrade to level host w/o vMotion?

We hab a laboratory and the environment in which we would like to test vCenter Update Manager. We have Crossover installed on vCenter-VM.

A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and without vMotion. I would tend to say no if a patch requires the host in maintenance mode, but perhaps that staging feature a more differentiated response.

I'm curious of your answers

A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and vMotion

That's right, you can not switch from a host using VUM if you vCenter VM resides on that host.  If you do not you can do a few things of vMotion.  Take note of your vCenter VM and host running the VM vCenter datastore.  Then connect directly to the host where your vCenter VM, it turns off, remove the inventory.  Then open a session on a different host, browse the data store and add the vCenter VM inventory and turn on.

Once the vCenter THAT VM is powered on a different host, you can patch the other host using AUVS.  Otherwise you have to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

  • Upgrade to level or not?

    Hi all

Please I need your expertise in this area, but before you start,

I'd like to thank everyone for their support and contribution, thank you very much for your time and effort, it is much appreciated because it makes this special and helpful forum.

    Now the question,

We have 3 hypervisor ESXi 4 and when I look at the update through the virtual Center Manager I see the errors of the missing updates and conflicting updates (please SEE ATTACHED IMAGES). I did some research and found the following link explaining what they do and their importance

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1017738

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1017739

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1017740

I've discussed this with another systems administrator and he insists on the fact that we can safely ignore these WARNINGS that is missing and conflicting updates and I say that we cannot ignore them as it is important to avoid future problems with hypervisors.

    Environment:

Esxi servers host about 50 servers between the 3, with active HA

Cisco ws-c4510R-E V - switch API is used with Esxi as I think it is standard and I know that this error has nothing to do with (vCenter Update Manager displays message of a conflict with the Cisco Nexus 1000V Virtual Ethernet Module) that we have Cisco Nexus 1000V Virtual Module

What I need from everyone is this:

-To provide information to prove one of the 1 - we can safely ignore these warnings *OR* 2 - we CANNOT ignore and must be solved / remedy?

-If to be solved and NOT ignored what is the best way to go about this?

-Are there risks involved if we go about these issues

If you need further information, or I haven't provided enough information please do not hesitate to ask me.

Once again thank you all for your time and effort is very much appreciated

    Hello

-To provide information to prove one of the 1 - we can safely ignore these warnings *OR* 2 - we CANNOT ignore and must be solved / remedy?

Given the lack of updates, I recommend you to follow the policy of updating your software.  This indicates that one or more updates have not been applied to a specific host.  If it is a critical update, I recommend that you apply this update.

Consider the conflicting updates, this is just a warning, and you can ignore it.  A conflict does not indicate a problem on the host computer.

-If to be solved and NOT ignored what is the best way to go about this?

In order to apply an update that is missing, you must restore a host.  Don't forget that the remediation process might restart a host, so you have your virtual machines to another host to avoid outages.

-Are there risks involved if we go about these issues?

There are always risks when you apply the updates/upgrades to level on a host, like any server. It is therefore recommended to make backups before you apply any update and schedule the downtime of your host.  I insist, you must follow your software update strategy.

Again, check the vCenter Update Manager Installation and Administration Guide:

  • The upgrade to ESXi host that hosts vCenter comments

Recently, we moved our vCenter Server in a virtual machine rather than running on a dedicated machine.

A question I have for those running in this type of configuration are how do you for the upgrade of the host as comments from vCenter runs (for example ESXi 5.0 > 5.1)? We usually use Update Manager to perform the upgrade, so I was wondering if there is just more to use the old method of mode start since the level of the server installation CD or if there is another special way Im unaware of.

    Thanks in advance!

If you have shared storage, you can connect to the host where you vCenter VM is registered, it off, remove the inventory, disconnect from the host, log in another host, browse the data store, add the vCenter VM inventory on the other host, turn on the vCenter VM and then you can remidate the other host using the virtual machine.

  • ESXi hosts disconnected/no response in Vcenter after upgrade (4.1 = > 5.5)

Hello. I'm upgrading our current infra (hosts/Essential licensing Vcenter / 3 ESXi 4.1).  vCenter Server has been upgraded OK, so I started to esxi upgrade hosts one by one.

Upgrade process is OK, but after the reboot, upgrade marked as "not responding" in vsphere client server. I could ping this host and connect via ssh.

When you try to reconnect the client host, got a strange error "this edition of vCenter only supports 3 host (s) in the inventory. After 3-4 hours of nothing to host

has begun to show ok. After upgrading a second host, the same situation. I don't understand, how to solve it without waiting for another 4 hours.

Restart of host management agents does not help.

I remember I have a similar situation in the past where the number of licenses does not update as expected, i.e. required some time. What helped was to restart the server vCenter Server in my case. Maybe worth a try!

    Hi guys,.

As planned to upgrade all the ESX to ESXi 4.1 Update 1, I started with Vcenter first. Everthing went smooth but it looks like that it lost access to the old DB?

What is there to do now?

    Thank you

of your screenshot and the size of the VIM_VCDB, it seems you used the existing DB, but has decided to crush him, so start an instance empty vCenter.

How the host ESX (i)?  Not the end of the world, even if you do not have a backup.  You can always recreate your infrastructure once again and then 'add host' inventory.  You will lose all historical data, but hosts and guests will not have been affected by the erasure of the DB

You use the bundled SQL Express, correct?

  • Patch in vCenter Update Manager repository.

    Hi Experts,

As a beginner to virtualization, I'm under vCenter 5.1 with ESXi 5.1 hosts. When I click on the Patch Repository tab, I can see patches associated with ESXi 4.0 and 4.1. Why patches are still visible in the Patch Repository tab.

Is there a way to remove the former patches to the Patch repository?

According to the VMware KB: VMware KB: correlation vCenter Server and ESX ESXi host build numbers to update level

Is another question: I am currently on ESXi 5.1 patch 1 with build 914609 and if I directly upgrade to ESXi 5.1 update 2 with build 1483097 then what about ESXi 5.1 patch 2 and ESXi patch3 5.1? I wanted to understand the difference between ESXi 5.1 patch and update 5.1 ESXi?

  • Databases of vCenter update strategy

We are currently deploying databases MS SQL Server 2008 Enterprise R2 SP2 - 64 bit for vCenter, VUM and SRM for vCenter 5.0 U1. We intend to upgrade to vCenter 5.5U1 and also upgrade databases MS SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64-bit. We perform an in place upgrade using the existing databases of 2008, and then upgrade to SQL 2012. Are there known problems to know?

    Thank you.

    Hey jfoutwest,

I did the movements of vCenter database / upgrades a few times and Vmware has a very detailed process for her, however whenever we moved it we have always had problems even if we followed article.  I would say a place in upgrade or re-installation of vCenter would be easier.

You can also make a new version of vCenter in the new 2012 SQL as a parallel installation base and simply move the hosts the new vCenter whenever you want.

This is the KB to move the vCenter database:

  • VMware Vcenter 5 upgrade Questions

Right now I have Esxi and Vmware Vcenter from version 4 to version 5.  A few questions:

    1. What is the easier and more average ordering to perform these upgrades?

2 should I have Vcenter loaded on a physical host, or is that to make a virtual machine?  I currently have it as a virtual machine, but think it might be a problem that he won't be available for upgrades of the host on which the Vcenter VM is on.

    1. What is the easier and more average ordering to perform these upgrades?

Make a backup of your DB vCenter, proceed with the installation of vCenter5.  Then, you can use VMware Update Manager to upgrade your ESXi hosts.  However, I would choose to do a reconstruction of working capital. vSphere5 is a major release.

2 should I have Vcenter loaded on a physical host, or is that to make a virtual machine?  I currently have it as a virtual machine, but think it might be a problem that he won't be available for upgrades of the host on which the Vcenter VM is on.

  • vCenter Update Manager 4.1

I'm sorry for the silly question, but I'm at my wits end, trying to find the installer for Update Manager 4.1

I am running 4.0 ESXi and vSphere 4.0 and I'm trying to update the hosts to ESXi 4.1 using the Update Manager, but it seems that I can't do it until I update the server vCenter Update Manager 4.1. I believe that I have improved vCenter successfully, but I understand that I will not be able to actually run the 4.1 client until I have a crowd of 4.1 running. :/

  • Upgrading stand-alone host ESX3.5

    Hello

I have 1 host ESX 3.5 with 2 virtual machines with their files on the local storage of ESX vm (not SAN storage)

The ESX Server is attached to vCenter 4.1.

What are some good approaches for the upgrade of the host ESX 4.1 and preserve the local data store (so my VM keeping intact)?

Update Manager? What would be the procedure for that?

VM hardware version is also 4 for virtual machine 2

    Thank you!

Re add is a better option that it redeploy agent vcenter to host again to return. The virtual machines do not need to re-record as it reappears when the host is added.
