Upgrading stand-alone host ESX3.5

Hello

I have 1 host ESX 3.5 with 2 virtual machines with their files on the local storage of ESX vm (not SAN storage)

The ESX Server is attached to vCenter 4.1.

What are some good approaches for the upgrade of the host ESX 4.1 and preserve the local data store (so my VM keeping intact)?

Update Manager? What would be the procedure for that?

VM hardware version is also 4 for virtual machine 2

Thank you!

Re add is a better option that it redeploy agent vcenter to host again to return. The virtual machines do not need to re-record as it reappears when the host is added.

  • Don't ' option UPGRADE available after failure ESXi 6.0 on a stand-alone host installation

    Dear all, I have a stand-alone host ESXi 5.0 that I tried to install 6.0 on. Installation failed due to missing NIC card r8168 drivers. in any case, I've created a new ISO using ESXi Customizer utility and ready to do it again once the installation of the new ISO standard. The problem now is that there is no 'upgrade' option available when I try to update, I get only the options 'Install' which will eliminate the existing configs etc completely. In summary: the host is still working fine and no problem with it. The issue is that ESXi 6.0 Installer based no existing ESXi installation on the host computer and suggest an installation instead of an upgrade option, what happened after a few failed attempts to run the upgrade. I found this page on this forum https://communities.vmware.com/thread/445526?start=0 & tstart = 0 that says that the solution is to move the directory to a local.tgz (in altbootbank/state.xxxxx/) more high. I don't have any idea how to do this. Appreciate any help on which program use and what commands to run in order to ensure that the old installation is reviewed by the ESXi 6.0 installation program. Thanks, Abid

    I managed to PASS my from5.0 host existing 6.0. To solve the problem, I had, I started the ESXi, authenticated and then checked the contents of the directories shell both Bootbank that Altbootbank by using the ls command. Altbootbank was empty. Then I copied all the files from /bootbank to /altbootbank using the cp command and then I could see the 'upgrade' again option for which I had posted this question. Installation was simple using the custom profile that I created using ESXI Customizer. Thanks for your help anyway, I'll close this issue now. Best regards, Abid

  • Download the stand-alone host to vCenter License Server failed because the exception: vim.fault.HostConnectFault.

    Location:

    ESXi 5.5 Update 2 stand-alone host with a licnese Essentials

    vCenter Server 5.5 Update 2

    Whenever I'm going to add this host to vCenter he fails with the error: download the file < HOST IP > license to vCenter Server failed because the exception: vim.fault.HostConnectFault.

    I restarted the server vCenter, tried different credentials and looked through all the articles online that I can find online with the same question and nothing none of them suggested has worked so far.

    Thoughts?  Ideas?

    I'll leave this here in the event that it helps someone else.  I was using an administrator account on the stand-alone host in an attempt to add it via vCenter.  Once I started using the Root account on the host, I could add without problems.

  • Patching stand-alone hosts ESXi 4.1

    I need assistance with patch 4.1 ESXi stand-alone hosts.  Is it possible to stage patches?  They can be downloaded and copied ot the host first?  I have to do it via a WAN connection and want to copy the patches before correction of the host. I need also some of the commands necessary to achieve this.  I'm not very good with the command/syntax of command line.  Any help is greatly apprecieated.

    You can stage patches if you are using vCenter Update Manager.  If you do not use vCenter you could

    (1) copy the patch into a local data store on the host

    (2) run the following cmdlet to PowerCLI - install -VMHostPatch -HostPath vmfs/volumes //.

  • How to create a virtual machine on a stand-alone host?

    Hello

    as you know others my son, I created a workflow to create several identical virtual machines on a cluster.

    Since we do not only have clustered hosts, but also some autonomous machines, I need to modify the workflow to be able to create virtual machines on these hosts.

    The main stage of the workflow is obviously one that creates virtual machines.

    It is derived from one of the supplied workflow within the Orchestrator library, but in the end, there is not much difference.

    The original workflow uses this method to create a virtual machine:

    task = vmFolder.createVM_Task( configSpec, vmResourcePool, vmHost );

    I've omitted vmHost in my workflow, because I did not want the user to select the host in the Cluster.

    So my execution of the method looks like this:

    task = vmFolder.createVM_Task( configSpec, vmCluster.resourcePool);

    Now, I tried to get this method to create a virtual computer on a stand-alone host, but everything I tried, he failed.

    Does anyone have a solution or a trick, what I might try to make this work?

    Thank you very much

    Andreas

    For the root folder, try this:

    var parent = vmHost.parent;
    While (!) () parent instanceof VcDatacenter)) {}
    parent = parent.parent;
    }
    var vmFolder = parent.vmFolder;

  • Draw attention to reports on a stand-alone host ESXi 5

    Is it possible to execute all statement (email alerts) on a stand-alone ESXi 5 hosts?

    I have a client with multiple virtual machines running on a single host ESXi 5 and you need to know, especially if the host fails, or possibly if resources are stretched.

    Is there anything that is integrated to respond to reports or is the only option to use vCenter?

    Unfortunately, these features are offered for vCenter. You can search any 3rd party tool which offer these features.

  • How to create 5 of Vmware Distributed Switch on Stand Alone host?

    Hi is this posible to carete Vmware 5 Distirbuted single host Stand switch without using virtual Center Server?

    Sorry not possible.  You need vcenter Server to use this feature.  Why do you use vds, if you do not have vCenter.  It doesn't seem to be much point.

  • Server R2 2012 crashing when you deploy the stand-alone host model.

    I encountered a problem with my server 2012 model deployment to a new independent host that I built in my virtual data center.

    Specification of the server:

    HP DL380 g8 linking the latest PSP firmware updates

    Local storage

    ESXi 5.5 U2 may 2015 HP build

    Card 8 GB SD for esxi 1.9 local TB SAS storage

    HP P420i

    Whenever I have move R2 server in 2012 to that Server Manager host down and other questions are noticed.

    Another noticed is characters and text on the virtual machine begins to blurr from the console.

    If I power off the virtual computer and move it to a server in my group I have no problem. Both servers are running the same version of 5.5U2

    Has anyone seen this problem before or suggestions?

    The result of more tweaks and troubleshooting exposed a faulty processor.

    This isn't linked VM.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Cannot start the VMs on ESX 4.0 stand-alone host

    Hello

    We have two standalone ESX 4.0 host. They have recently lost power, and since then, we are unable to do anything with virtual machines.

    Security will not plug a laptop so I can't connect to a host using the vSphere Client.

    The command line, I ran:

    GetState \vm.vmx VMware-cmd < path_to_vm >

    VMware-cmd < path_to_vm > \vm.vmx start

    Both times, I get this error:

    vim.faul.HostConnectFault: unable to connect to localhost ({(vim.fault.No.Permission)

    dynamicType = < unset >;

    dynamicProperty = (vmodl. DynamicProperty) [].

    MSG = authorized to perform this operation was denied.',

    faultCause = < unset >

    faultMessage = (vmodl. LocalizableMessage) [].

    object = "vim. File: ha-folder-root',

    privilegeId = "System.View.

    })

    It seems that 'root' has lost its permissions to start the virtual machines! Unfortunately, the engineer who built the servers is therefore more around and there is no documentation for them. Can anyone suggest what that might be?

    Thank you Andre,.

    This is the user-error (shame on me).

    Before discovering the fault, I checked the article kb 1031192 and permissions in the file permission (or authentication) were right. -(1).

    It's been so long that I used ESX / Service Console that I forgot to do "su-" rather than "su root" from the non-privilegie account to the root account.

    When 'esxcfg -' orders have also failed, I Googled it and found the answer on the Blog of Simon long.

    (Google 'ESXCFG Command not Found' and found on simonlong.co.uk). This machine will not let me copy / paste so that I can not paste in the link!

    Well - I had the problem solved after that. Thanks for the reply!

    Have a great weekend people.

  • Set the permission on a stand-alone host failed with the script that I made

    I made a script to set the permissions on our ESX host.

    The goal is to set the permissions on the host itself. The same permissions when connect directly with the vsphere client to the host.

    The problem is that after running the script, that the permissions are not set to hostlevel. They are only vissible connecting to the virtual Center Server.

    This is my script:

    #$esxCred = Get-Credential
    $vcServer = read-host "Virtual center server: "
    $vcServer =  $vcServer.Trim();
    $cluster = read-host "Clustername "
    $cluster = $cluster.Trim()
    write-output "Credentials for ESX hosts "
    $esxcred = get-credential

    #Connect to vCenter
    Connect-VIServer $vcServer | Out-Null

    #Connect to ESX hosts in cluster
    foreach ($esx in Get-Cluster $cluster | Get-VMHost) {
     write-output $esx
     Connect-VIServer $esx -Credential $esxCred | Out-Null
     New-VIPermission -Entity $esx -Principal '<DOMAINNAME>\ESX Admins' -Role NoAccess
     }

    #Disconnect from vCenter
    Disconnect-VIServer $vcServer -Confirm:$false | Out-Null

    Does anyone know why the permissions are not set on hostlevel?

    When I run the New VIPermission when connecting to the esx host, it works well...

    Hello

    In order to operate, you need to replace:

    New-VIPermission-body $esx - Principal 'BUSINESS\ESX Admins"- role NoAccess-Server $esxConnect

    With:

    New-VIPermission-entity $esx. Name - main 'BUSINESS\ESX Admins"- role NoAccess-Server $esxConnect

    It is not good to work with objects, comes from a single connection and use directly, as part of another connection (relay something like ToString() + OBN will happen).

    Kind regards

  • VUM - vCenter Update/upgrade to level host w/o vMotion?

    We hab a laboratory and the environment in which we would like to test vCenter Update Manager. We have Crossover installed on vCenter-VM.

    A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and without vMotion. I would tend to say no if a patch requires the host in maintenance mode, but perhaps that staging feature a more differentiated response.

    I'm curious of your answers

    A fundamental question is whether you can update/upgrade to level the host that runs the vCenter-VM and vMotion

    That's right, you can not switch from a host using VUM if you vCenter VM resides on that host.  If you do not you can do a few things of vMotion.  Take note of your vCenter VM and host running the VM vCenter datastore.  Then connect directly to the host where your vCenter VM, it turns off, remove the inventory.  Then open a session on a different host, browse the data store and add the vCenter VM inventory and turn on.

    Once the vCenter THAT VM is powered on a different host, you can patch the other host using AUVS.  Otherwise you have to patch the host as a stand-alone host.

  • vpxuser on stand-alone ESXi

    Hello.

    I always thought that vpxuser is created on ESXi during the process of attaching to vCenter. Hoewever I figured out that this account exists on ESXi, even if the host is not managed by vCenter and has never been (I don't know where I read the news that vpxuser exists only if the host is managed by vC, there is no such info here vSphere 5.5 Documentation Centre). So my question is: what vpxuser need for in the case of standalone ESXi? And could change its permissions or password affect somehow the stand-alone host?

    I can't tell you the reason why, but with the last ESXi versions (including 6.0) vpxuser is a predefined on the host computer and not only created with the addition of vCenter Server as in the older versions of the host. The latest documentation (assignment of permissions for ESXi) includes this design change.
