WD external hard drive connects to the desktop PC

I have a WD external drive used to be connected to an XP PC.  I've upgraded to a new Win7 PC and tried to connect the external hard drive via a USB to work.  The drive does not appear on the desktop but is listed in the Device Manager.  When I connect the same drive on my W7 laptop it shows fine.  Why can I not see this external hard drive on my desktop PC?

Check if the drive is visible in disk management you will just be assigned a drive letter, do a right click on it, assign the path and the drive letter, choose a letter available.

How to use Vista disk management

Or in the Manager of devices under USB controllers, right-click on the car restarted, uninstalling, it must be reinstalled.

I have a WD passport external hard drive connected to my time capsule, so my wife and I can easily share files. I have the external hard drive connected through the locked time capsules WiFi network so someone in the House can not access however if they walked the time capsule and not plugged in the external hard drive they could walk away with it. When I try to password protect external hard drive then time capsule may not recognise, and so I can't use it as an external hard drive that is shared. No one knows how, to password protect the external hard drive connected to the time capsule as if someone physically stole the external hard drive it would be locked, but have yet still recognizable by Time Capsule when I plugged?

    Hope that makes sense.

The only way to do is to encrypt the files on the computer.

And you both use the same password. Unfortunately, this probably means that you can not share files directly... The TC is not a SIN... never, it was designed for this purpose so there no controls to help admin file sharing.

If you create a DMG file on WD drive that encrypt you and you can copy files to and from... but only one at a time.

Another method would be to use a specific software... Watch chronosync.

    http://www.econtechnologies.com/Chronosync/guide-sync-with-disk-image.html

I don't him have not run in this configuration... so, you have to experiment if it manages what you want.

I think that there will always be limitations on concurrent access from multiple computers.

  • Hello. I created a folder music on my external hard drive connected to my asus router.  I can now access the music through my media library.  How can I change the folder when I make new purchases to iTunes easily without doing it one by one

I created a folder music on an external hard drive connected to my asus router.  I copied my music from my iTunes library in this folder access and can now my kodi media network.  How I updated the folder when I do new iTunes purchase without having to do it one by one thanks

You can use a backup tool that updates only modified files.  You don't say what kind of computer you use.

ITunes is actively using media on the external hard drive so you can replace it. Simply copy the media to one other player does not have iTunes it use it.  iTunes is probably still using media to your internal drive.

  • How to set up Time Machine via a HARD drive connected to the USB port on the router?

    Hi all

I have an Arris Touchstone Data Gateway DG1670A/TW for my internet / wireless which was provided by my ISP.  There is a USB port at the back of the router and I was wondering if I could connect an external HARD drive to save the two Macbook Pro that I have in my house through Time Machine wireless?  If Yes, could someone provide me the details regarding how to set this up properly?

I too, was thinking about making a 4 TB HARD drive - 2 and wanted to partition so that half of it would work for Time Machine and the other half I would be able to store photos that I take on my digital SLR and are in Lightroom.  Could this be a problem at all? I partition? or Time Machine just to use the available space and delete older backups to make room for additional photos?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

  • Can I have macbook start up from my external hard drive instead of the internal HD of the laptop?

I use a macbook air 2014 model and would like to know if I can boot the mac from an external hard drive rather than the inside. The reason to do this is to save space on the laptop and updates can be installed directly on the external hard drive.

Is this possible? Forgive me, because I'm not that tech savvy. Thank you in advance!

Yes. Install or clone of Mac OS X on it and then select it in the pane of the system preferences Startup disk.

  • How to connect two external HARD drive satellite and the same printer?

    Hello

I have now two laptop Toshiba Equium.
What is the best way to connect them so that they can access the same external hard drive and the same printer?

    Thank you

    Hello

I guess the two laptops are in the same network; Home LAN or WLan. Right?
I this case I recommend you connect HARD drive and printer to one of the portable satellite.

Then you can share the HARD drive and the printer with other cell phones on the LAN.

You could add the network permission to others, and in this case the other participants of the network would be able to share the printer and HARD drive.

  • I can't save the file to my external hard drive connected to my wireless router!

I have a wireless router netgear WNDR3700 with 'plug-and-play' feature that allows a home to simply connect your hard drive to your network. I managed it to get up and running, but I encountered some problems when I tried to save files on the disk. The strange thing is that I can copy and paste or move the files to the location that I want to but I can't save it there... I have windows 7 Professional 64-bit installed.

    I thought about it :)

In the folder "My Computer" and under "Network location" I clicked on my external hard drive. Just below the navigation bar, I clicked on 'Map network drive' I entered all the information of location on hard disk and I got another file under "network location". I deleted the old one and used a new one that I could use without any problems until now... hope this makes sense...

  • I can't boot my system when I have an external hard drive connected.

Start with an external hard drive

Recently, I buy a WD MY Book Essential 1 TB external hard drive. I can't the computer to boot while the hard drive is connected.
The Gateway logo appears; If the My Book Essential is connected the computer won't go any further.
IF the My Book Essential is unplugged, by physically unplugging the cable power supply or where the USB 3.0 cable the system starts right in windows.
WD technology say to disconnect the drive when I stopped and when I start taking the computer to the external hard drive. For me, it makes no sense, there must be a better way.

It seems that I solved my own question. I disabled Legacy USB Support and now the computer starts windows. I take a bit of time and the extra minute or more, but it won't in windows and now I'm happy.

    Hello

Go into your Bios by pressing DEL, F2, etc. at startup.

Look at the bottom of the start screen for the right for the installation key or BIOS.

    Wait your boot order Options.

You will probably find that the boot (or words like that) USB devices are listed as 1st in the boot order.

Replace the hard drive to be 1st in the boot order.

    See you soon.

    Hello

Have you tried to connect the external hard drive on another USB port?

Try to connect the WD external hard drive on another computer.

    Follow these steps:

Method 1: You can run the troubleshooter in the following article and see if this fits the Bill.

Open the hardware and devices Troubleshooter

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/open-the-hardware-and-devices-Troubleshooter

    Also, run the Fixit.
Hardware devices do not work or are not detected in Windows

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/en-us

Method 2: Check if the external hard drive is recognized in disk management and assign a drive letter to the same.

To open disk management, follow these steps:

    a. click Start, type disk management in the start search box and press enter.

    (b) if the drive is detected in disk management, I suggest you to assign a drive letter and see if that does the trick.

  • Creating Installer bootcamp on the external hard drive instead of the USB partition?

    Hello

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 and mountain LIon. I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp, but my USB isn't enough grand (only 4 GB of free space). Instead, I expect to use my external hard drive. However when I go to bootcamp to create the installation program, it gives a warning that my hard drive will be erased. It is not possible to create the installer on a partition instead of him wiping the entire HARD drive?

    Thanks for the help!

Boot Camp and Windows supports installation on an external drive. There are specific exceptions in the versions of Windows, see Microsoft for more information on installing Windows on an external drive.

  • backup to external hard drive, removal of the movies on computer?

I want to know if I got back to the top of my itunes library on an external hard drive I can remove my itunes on my computer movies to save space on this subject? It is my friends computer and I don't want to take up space. And then I still see them on my apple TV if the movies are not on my internal hard drive?

I am new to this and I wanted to know if my apple tv can stream after I deleted movies from my computer? I have no idea how it works, as far as I know I need to get back to the top of my purchases...

Backup and deletion are not back up. Backup is always to have two copies of everything, preferably on completely separate players in different locations.

In order to play something through iTunes, it must be added to iTunes.  You can add files from a separate iTunes drive and make them stay on the player by holding down the option key while adding, but there may be painful to see broken links if the drive is not attached when using iTunes constantly.

You can listen to an AppleTV iCloud films apparently, but I can't provide details.  This should work for you, unless it's one of those elements is no longer in the Apple Store (and your reason to always make sure that you have a copy on your hard disks).

  • can I use an external hard drive to increase the disk space and memory on xp?

I am considering an external hard drive of 1 TB to trasmet all files on the computer. There is little hard drive space and memory left. Can I use the external hard drive free space and can it will be installed via USB and use my operating system?

You can use the external hard drive to transfer your data from your internal hard drive.  Cannot move system files (such as Program Files, Windows and swap files) well.  Looks like your use of the word 'memory' made reference to disk space - it normally refers to which an external drive would not affect RAM.  If you mean disk space, however, you can certainly free SPAC drive this way.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.
