We had to get a new computer and I want to copy bookmarks. Where were they stored?

Our old computer, desktop with Windows XP, wouldn't start, so we bought a new one (Windows 7). Extraction of data from the hard drive of the old computer.

Is it possible that I can get the Firefox bookmarks? All information I found had to do with bookmarks to find a computer that is running now.

Thank you.
Leah

On Windows XP, your Firefox data was stored in this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Because the Application Data is a hidden folder, to walk this path, you generally need to change a setting in Windows to display the hidden files and folders. This article explains how to do on Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files

Once you get off in your Firefox data, you will find one or more profile semi-randomly-named folders. If there is more than one, find the most recent.

At this point, you have two options:

  • Copy the places.sqlite database that stores the bookmarks and history of your old profile folder to the new
  • Restore a backup of the folder bookmarkbackups file in your old profile and forget history
