What is the fragmentation of the files?

Sometimes, when you install a program or create a data file, the file eventually axe up into large pieces and stored in several locations on the disk. This is called fragmentation.

Why this happens?

When you install your operating system and programs on your hard drive, they are written on the disc, for the most part, in a contiguous block without gaps. The exceptions are some system files that must be stored in specific locations. Over time, that you create and then delete documents or uninstall programs, once filled with places is left empty and you end up with files scattered around the disk.

Now, when Windows writes a file on the disk, it looks a suitable free space room in which to store. What happens, then, when you copy a file from database or audio of 40 M on the disc and the largest share of the free space is only 30 M? Or say that you change an existing file by adding a whole bunch of data so the file now takes more space on the disc. For files, Windows writes the first part of the file in a section of the disk and then scouts of other places to store the rest of the file. The end result is that a single file can be stored in several pieces scattered all over the disk.

So I recently learned in computers 101 is a good maintenance task to defragment your hard drive at any time (or when the PC is slow).  My laptop running slow, so I thought I would start a Defrag.  In Windows 7 Home Premium, I hit the Start button, type "defrag", then choose Disk Defragmenter.  And I get the text following pop up:

"Disk Defragmenter was planned with the help of another program
Disk Defragmenter is currently using customized settings created by another program.  Before you change the schedule, you should remove the custom settings. "Followed by two buttons: [remove settings] [Cancel]
Well right, well, then maybe that I've implemented automatic defrags in some programs, and then I forgot that I did.  But it seems to me that what I want to do is go change that is implemented in the other program.  EXCEPT THIS PROGRAM IS?  So I wish Disk Defragmenter would have given me a clue where to look...  Someone told pointers?

Open Windows Explorer or my computer.

Right-click on your hard drive, select Properties , then select the Tools tab.

Click Defragment now...  [it starts running] and it takes you to the normal dialog box that controls the defragmentation.

Please note that Windows 7 defragments normally just in the background and you don't really notice.  You can check in Manager tasks if you wish.

If you never leave your slow PC then you will get any automatic defragmentation.

Defragmentation of Windows 7 is not the same as it was for previous versions.  Due to the speed of the modern hard disks, defragmenting only fragments of puts in large pieces.  It does not attempt to completely eliminate the fragments.

    Generally no.

How many memory currently have installed? How did you buy?
Did you buy exactly the same type, brand, model, etc. ?

Why do you want more memory? Depending on how much you have now, and
What applications you are running, it may or may not do anything for you. More memory
is this not better for everyone. This is my standard message on this
    Object:

The amount of RAM you need to good performance is * not * a
unique situation for all. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have prevents you from using the file page in a meaningful way, and
It depends on what applications you are running. Most of the people a typical range running
Enterprise XP applications find that somewhere around 512 MB
works well, others need more. Almost everyone will see poor performance
with less than 256 MB. Some people, especially those who do things
as modification of large photographic images, can see an improvement in performance by
adding even more 512 MB - sometimes much more.

If you currently use the page file significantly, more memory
will reduce or eliminate the use and improve your performance.
If you do not use the pagefile significantly, it will make more memory
    nothing for you. Reach
WinXP - 2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your use of the page file. Who should
give you a good idea of more memory can help and if so, how
    lots more.

You have 35% of your hard drive free. It's disk space, also called
storage. It is not memory, what is RAM. Adding memory will not make
any changes to the available disk space.

I own a HP Pavilion P6000, model #p7610t. I'm using Windows 7 OS. When I want to start Disk Defragmenter, I get a window with the following message: Disk Defragmenter is currently using customized settings created by another program. There is a button with a blue and Gold Shield that says: 'delete settings '. How can I identify this other program? Should I forget about it and remove the settings?

Bob, I, personally, would eliminate the settings to see if that helps.  When you do this it can give you a clue to the other program involved.  The worst that can happen is that you need to reinstall the other program.

  • Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter Hangs

The DISK CLEANUP and DISK DEFRAGMENTER freezes when it COMPRESS OLD FILES

Agreed - you must remove the option compress old files:

Compress old files comes from the good old days, when hard drives were weak and slow, and he had to each byte, you can get on your hard drive for programs and things.  Today, thanks to modern technology, it is almost superfluous.

If you want your cleaning disc to run faster, I would just remove the option compress old files on XP because it is known to crash or give the illusion of being hanged.  If you have 1 million files on your system, you'll wait a long time and your system may appear to be hung (maybe that's really).

I really don't think that with the technology available today that compress old files is necessary.  It would have been slow you if XP needs unzip a file.  Besides, nobody seems to be able to tell me at what age an old file is in the XP terminology... what was simply a file become old?  I just remove this 'feature' and never see him again and my disk cleanup runs in a Flash, since it doesn't have to search for old files to compress (some old way).

It is a 'problem' for some systems that Microsoft made an article on how to disable it (mine is disabled)

  • What is this average, Disk Defragmenter has detected that chkdsk command is schduled to run on the volume: (C). Please run chkdsk /f.

Been trying to run the defrag on my C drive and this message keeps coming up.

When you try to defragment a volume of that Disk Defragmenter reports:

Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (c :))

    Please run Chkdsk /f.

This means that the volume that you want to defragment was marked 'dirty' XP.  This is not necessarily all of the data has been lost on the volume, it simply means that XP thinks that the volume should be checked to find errors because of something that happened before.

You won't be able to defragment the volume until the dirty bit has been removed.

A volume can be marked as dirty, if the system underwent a power interruption (power failure, pulling plug, removing the battery, button / stop), abandoned restart or an abnormal termination.  One of these events?

When XP starts, it automatically checks the bit of impurity on each volume.  You can also tell XP to ignore the bit of impurity on any volume, but this probably isn't a good idea in case there is a real problem that needs to be fixed.  If you have a hard drive where the dirty bit will not disappear, you can tell XP not to check.

If the starting XP detects that the volume is dirty, it will be automatically run the check disk with error correction (chkdsk/r) and try to fix the problems detected.

If the chkdsk command succeeds, it clears the dirty bit, and then you can defragment the volume.

You can check the status of your bit of impurity from a command prompt window.

To do this, click Start, run and enter in the box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window.

For example, to query the bit of impurity on drive C, type:

    fsutil dirty query C:

    The sample output:
    Volume c is dirty
    Volume C: is dirty

Is the volume of your sale or it is not dirty?

Since XP of course already thinking that the volume is dirty, XP will automatically run chkdsk when it restarts to try to clear the dirty bit, in order to plan another running chkdsk can not help you much.  Sometimes the auto chkdsk on a reboot will be not only clear things to the top, but you can try it.

I would like to start in the XP Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r from there you can actually watch and see what happens and decide what to do about this.  When own running chkdsk/r, it clears the dirty bit unless your HARD drive is somewhat distressed.

    Defragmenter

    Hi Augie,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    1. you run defrag disk for the first time?

Disk Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your hard drive and brings together fragmented files so that your computer can run more efficiently. We must keep in mind that the Disk Defragmenter uses disk access low priority and processor so that it is not influence your current running programs. This automatically translates a slower process. Disk defragmentation can take a long time if you run it for the first time and also depend on the space of hard disk and available data. If may take up to 15-16 hours, depending on the data and the bad clusters on the hard drive.

    Try the suggested methods.

    Method 1

If you want to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    Method 2

You can run a disk scan command to remove bad sectors on the hard drive, then run Disk Defragmenter.

    1. open the computer by clicking the Start button, click computer.

    2. right click on the hard drive you want to check, and then click Properties.

    3. click on the sur l' onglet tab Tools and then, under error-checking, click check now.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that detects the scanning, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report a problem, but not to fix them.

To perform a full disk check, select search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan is trying to find and repair physical errors on the hard drive itself, and it may take much longer to complete.

To check for errors file and the physical errors, select automatically fix file system errors and search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    4. click on Start.

Depending on the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, do not use your computer for any other tasks while it checks errors.

You may need to update some plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update if necessary:

  • I downloaded and updated to version 6.0.2, and it's what version it says that I have in the help tab. But on the page of the addon, it won't let me download the latest themes ect because it says that my version will not work with it.

He said all before. He tells me I have the latest version in the help tab slot on Firefox. I've upgraded as 4 times now, I even uninstalled firefox and reinstaled the latest version, but no change what he always says I'm out of date. as I said above on the addon pages I can't get what I want, as it says I still have version 3.6 help please I like firefox and IE hatred but it works much better for the moment

If he has problems with the update or the permissions then simpler is to download the full version and trash the version currently installed to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the file on the desktop DMG

    • Trash the present application Firefox to do a clean (re-) install
    • Install the new version you downloaded
