Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter Hangs
The DISK CLEANUP and DISK DEFRAGMENTER freezes when it COMPRESS OLD FILES
Agreed - you must remove the option compress old files:
Compress old files comes from the good old days, when hard drives were weak and slow, and he had to each byte, you can get on your hard drive for programs and things. Today, thanks to modern technology, it is almost superfluous.
If you want your cleaning disc to run faster, I would just remove the option compress old files on XP because it is known to crash or give the illusion of being hanged. If you have 1 million files on your system, you'll wait a long time and your system may appear to be hung (maybe that's really).
I really don't think that with the technology available today that compress old files is necessary. It would have been slow you if XP needs unzip a file. Besides, nobody seems to be able to tell me at what age an old file is in the XP terminology... what was simply a file become old? I just remove this 'feature' and never see him again and my disk cleanup runs in a Flash, since it doesn't have to search for old files to compress (some old way).
It is a 'problem' for some systems that Microsoft made an article on how to disable it (mine is disabled)

My computer is as I said above a desk with the microsoft XP program and is a little less than five years. It has been slow and it dawned on me that I hadn't used the disk cleanup or some defrag for a while, but I clicked on start, all programs, accessories, System Tools was is no longer. I have not been able to access the disk cleanup or defragment option and hope that out there, can someone advise me how to get this feature.
You can run Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter disk since the start > run box by typing the following
Cleanmgr
Dfrg.mscYou can restore all of the 'Accessories' group (including system tools) by following the directions here--> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Accessories.htm
Or you could just create shortcuts to
C:\Windows\system32\dfrg.msc
and
%SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exeNote that % SystemRoot % is the directory where Windows. You can use this form or explicit as in the example for the shortcut from the Defrag.

The 'System tools' icon on my desktop disappeared. I used it when I defragmented the computer and disk cleanup.
When I hit 'start' 'Programs', 'Accessories' I have 'System tools' option, but when it is open, the icons are many and unintelliglble for me. There is nothing of cleaning disk or Defrag. How can I get my old icon on the desktop to disk cleanup and defragmentation among other choices?
Thanks for the tips.

No sound on my laptop after disk cleanup and defragmentation
Hope someone can help me,
I did a disk cleanup and defragmentation on my laptop today, and after it was done, I found out that I have no audio whatsoever. It was working fine before the disk cleanup and defragmentation, but no more. Accidentally delete the audio? If so, how I would get this back?
I am a novice computer, so technical terms will go over my head. Any suggestions?
Hi IrelandJr14,
Method 1
Visit the below link and run the available audio Troubleshooter and check if this solves the problem.

Method 2
If the previous step fails then I would suggest that you install the latest audio drivers on the computer visiting the site of computer manufacturer.
Updated a hardware driver that is not working properly
I hope this helps!

Fragmented disks are usually taking place, disc-cleaning wish / will.
However, if defrag is unable to clean up some files, which means that they are probably being used, of course
nortan software is not running when the defragmentation... Try the task mgr, note the operating

I downloaded Service Pack 3, and now my Disk Defragmenter does more
After that I downloaded the Service pack, I can not load Disk Defragmenter. The system restore was put there where there is no Checkpoint earlier when it has been installed. Help!
Hello
Do you currently or have you ever had a third-party disk defrag tool (such as Diskeeper, Auslogics, etc..) Installed and uninstalled then? Sometimes no will again put the original XP Defragmenter settings so you have to put yourself back in to re-record some DLL files.
To do this, click Start, run and in the box type each of the following lines one at a time, and click OK to run each of the commands one at a time:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dllWhen the process is completed for each DLL, you sign up, you should see a message similar to the following:
DllRegisterServer in
... Succeeded. It's good to register the dll, even if they are already registered.
For more information, see this link:

I bought the extra memory. I have to do something when I install the new memory?

what Disk Defragmenter say and do?
Please tell me in simple terms that I can understand
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_Defragmenter _(Windows)
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=What+does+Disk+Defragmenter+do%3F&btnG=Search&Meta=
What is the fragmentation of the files?
Sometimes, when you install a program or create a data file, the file eventually axe up into large pieces and stored in several locations on the disk. This is called fragmentation.
Why this happens?
When you install your operating system and programs on your hard drive, they are written on the disc, for the most part, in a contiguous block without gaps. The exceptions are some system files that must be stored in specific locations. Over time, that you create and then delete documents or uninstall programs, once filled with places is left empty and you end up with files scattered around the disk.
Now, when Windows writes a file on the disk, it looks a suitable free space room in which to store. What happens, then, when you copy a file from database or audio of 40 M on the disc and the largest share of the free space is only 30 M? Or say that you change an existing file by adding a whole bunch of data so the file now takes more space on the disc. For files, Windows writes the first part of the file in a section of the disk and then scouts of other places to store the rest of the file. The end result is that a single file can be stored in several pieces scattered all over the disk.

The original title: Disk Defragmenter takes too long
My Disk Defragmenter has worked all night and is still in course, would there be a problem?
Hello
The Vista defrag works quietly in the background without intervention on your part
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/942092
In Windows Vista, there are a lot of improvements in the defrag engine and handling of fragmentation. By default, Windows Vista uses Task Scheduler to automatically keep the defragmented hard drive. This Automatic defragmentation does not affect the performance of the Windows Vista operating system...
If you want to use a much better defragmentation program which is free and where you can see the results, I suggest this one:
http://www.Auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/
See you soon.

How do you know that never, it ends when there is no GUI on Vista for Defrag?
in vista, the defragmentation process works silently in the background
Unfortunately in vista it does not provide a GUI to show progress as it did in xp
to do this, you'll need 3rd party defrag programs
read the comments on these FREE below defragmentation programs and choose the one that you prefer to use

http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/UltraDefrag.html
UltraDefrag is an Open Source disk defragmentation tool that offers a quick Defrag, using a pilot based on the kernel. It offers a simple with a cluster map display graphical user interface, as well as command line interface and scheduling option
http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/puranfree.html
Puran Defrag is a Disk Defragmenter easy to use which offers start defragmentation, automatic defragmentation, intelligent directory optimization, background (low priority) operation and optimization of free space. Other features include integrated planning, automatic reboot or shutdown after defragmentation and integration with Windows Explorer to defragment individual files from the context menu. The free version is identical in functionality to the standard version (shareware), but it is limited to a private, non commercial use
http://www.SnapFiles.com/get/iobitsmartdefrag.html
Smart Defrag is a Disk Defragmenter automatically keeps your hard disk space does not become too defragemented, which may cause slower disk performance.
