What Email layouts / Design works for you and for what purpose?

There are several books on web design and usability, but when it comes to email there is a little less information.

From my experience, the page layout (just the high-level design / position of the text and buttons) must correspond to the intention. In addition, a delicate design helps multi-device compatibility.

A guide used in previous experience has been of MailChimp that describes the number of layout of columns and discuss the purposes. Smashing Magazine was also an inspiration with the many directives for example driven.

What are your thoughts, what page/design layouts worked for you, reached the right click by rate or the objectives of the emails?

Or what other design BASED e-mail do you use?

I found that Litmus.com is a very good source of information on the subject: Tips & resources | Sunflower
