What happened to 'Guest Stretch'?

When I upgraded from VMware Workstation 6 to VMware Workstation 6.5 I could find is no longer the option "Stretch invited." All I can see now under Edit-> Preferences-> display is Autofit guest. If this option is removed or is something else wrong? I also tried in Workstation 7 with the same results

"Stretch" prompt by default.  If you have pref.fullscreen.v5 = "TRUE" in your preferences file, then the option "Change the host resolution" old appears instead.

  • VSA and what happens if Vcenter falls down?

Hi, im specing a vmware project and we will use VSA and wanted to get the opinion of peoples

Option 2 is to go with a two host or a three node host.

In the node option 2 host, I would need a third vCenter server and act as the tiebreaker in a failure scenario

With the option of node 3 host I was running on one of the three hosts vcenter

IM leaning more towards option two node because of the storage.

Ive price on some Dell servers, and I am planning purchase servers that can have up to 8 disks in them, and im going to use all 8 disks with Raid 5.  If in the end im planning to have Abu 3.6 TB of space used on each server.  I intend maxing out the storage, so I won't be able to extend the storage later.

Since VSA reflects things, guests 2 or 3 guests have not give me more space.  So in the end, no matter what option I'm going with evil have almost 3.6 TB of usable space after VSA things mirrors

I plan buy 2 processors in each server with 64 GB of memory for each server.  I think I ran out of storage before having more cpu and memory, so im thinking the option three node would be wasefull

If lead hosts 2 will probably be about $10,000 each, in order to get a third one which would not really be used seems exaggerated

So I can just spend $3,000 and get a vCenter Server

But what happens if the Vcenter server has a hardware failure.

I know in Vshpere the computers physical hosts have all failover so HA will work again and so on so im not worried about that

But if Vcenter is down, which will have harmful effects on the VSA of things part?

    Thank you

    Mike

Nothing happens to the ASB if vCenter down - she keeps using data.  You will not be able to manage the ASB, but you will lose access to the data.

  • What happens at VM cluster HA - DRS

    Hi all

    can someone please clarify

AP / DRS I understand is

If I HA single ESX VM cluster resumes on next available host.

If I single cluster DRS of ESX - VM ESX vmotion will busy unless charges ESX (- from charge - which means more CPU / memory)

Question: what happens to VM on HA - DRS cluster. ??

Scenario; VM is part of ESX, which has properties of HA - enabled DRS.

I have one of the ESX restart. Automatically virtual for next ESX vmotion machine? It also RESTARTS on next available ESX

Q is going to restart or not restart?

-J' hope I'm clear (do not confuse you)

    -sri

    It's pretty simple:

HA--> HA--> VM restarts when an unexpected failure has caused your VMs to descend

DRS--> Distributed Resource Scheduler--> Can migrate seamlessly to the VMS between hosts when there is an imbalance of the burden of your cluster. You can also use "maintenance mode" to evacuate a host when you know that something is about to go wrong.

So in answer to your questions:

If you restart one of the guests then:

    (1) you would have of the placed in maintenance mode before hand and VMs will be migrated to another host (vmotioned)!

    (2) If you forgot to put in maintenance mode that will be restarted the virtual machines.

  • What happens if I mix n match licenses?

Current situation: 2 hosts x ESX 3.5 with Enterprise level licenses

    Future situation: 3 guests x ESXi 4.1

I was wondering what happens if I buy just a Standard license rather than an enterprise for the additional server license.  I realize that this server then not be able to do things like:

    -Storage vMotion

    -vStorage API Multipathing

This will affect all my servers, or I will simply not be able to get my new server to participate with these functions?  I buy wrong if I try to save a few bucks by mixing and matching of licenses?

You can mix OK licenses and as you mention simply want to have some characteristics of the host of the 3rd.  Here are the steps to add / allocation of licenses - http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1010839.

  • What happens if vcenter fails?

While in a meeting, when I tried to sell the idea of vmware, I was thrown a question, what happens if vcenter breaks down.

How we prevent that? Make 2 VMS in vcenter too? I intend to have a virtual machine running vcenter. Is this good practice.

God of the times like these that I wished I could read books faster like a hollywood robot 1965!

    Please help.

    Thank you

    RJ

We will all live a virtual life...

If your instance of vCenter falls down, your ESX hosts and their guests will continue to operate normally for 14 days without access to the source of their license (assuming that your vCenter Server server is also source of license).  HA will work.  DRS will not be, but that's all.

The most important piece about vCenter, in my opinion, is the DB.  Take care of your DB.  Make sure that it is on a separate server and running on a cluster solution.

You can look at VMware vCenter Server Heartbeat if you're looking in a redundancy for your instance of vCenter.
