What happened to my desktop and everything on it?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a laptop SONY Viao. Yesterday, when I went to start a second ago three notices at the bottom of the screen, I didn't have time to read (but something on a different desktop computer running) and now my office has only pgm icons and default Windows background. My documents, all seem to have disappeared as well as my photos, other than what is in my recycling bin. Downloads is empty. This MS revenge for me not download Windows 10? What should I do about it? Help!

If all the icons on your desktop are missing or the office is completely empty, but you still have the Windows taskbar, firstly check simple things:

Right-click on your desktop, choose view and make sure the option "Show Desktop icons" are checked/enabled:

If all the icons on the desktop are missing AND the taskbar is also missing (everything you see if your background image or paper painted), start (Ctrl-Alt-Del) Task Manager and check under the processes tab to see if explorer.exe is running (it should be).

If explorer.exe is not running in the Manager of tasks, click file, new task, and in the Open box, enter:

Explorer.exe

Then click OK to start explorer.exe. Nnotice in the example below explorer.exe is not listed in the process tab, and it must be:

When your user profile is damaged, Windows will save you in a temporary profile and that the temporary profile will not have everything you're used to seeing - but you can remedy.

Each user on your system has a profile of the user and in each user's profile are all things which belongs to this user - the Windows desktop, the taskbar, the menus of all the programs, Documents, music, Images, etc. Each user has its own set of these and if Windows you opened a session to a temporary profile you won't see these things.

You can use Explorer to navigate to the c:\Users folder and look for a folder with the same name as the user profile that you are accustomed to using - it is where all of your "missing" items are. You can see something like this in the users folder:

When your user profile is corrupted Windows will save you in a temporary profile and that temporary profile will not have everything you are used to seeing - but you can usually retrieve all missing in a corrupt user profile.

When you log a "Preparing your desktop" message may appear briefly following a message like this:

This message will fade away, leaving you with a desktop with a few icons - perhaps everything you see are a few basic things like a basket.

A temporary profile does not last... as soon as you stop or disconnect the temporary profile is removed and when you restart your system or log on again, you will see the same thing (a good thing to test).

Sometimes the problem is temporary and if you restart your system has a few times maybe things start working again (lucky you) but if it doesn't work you will have to create a new Windows user and copy parts of the user profile afflicted in the new user profile.

An another quick test to check the problem of a damaged user profile is to open a command prompt window and see the prompt says:

Normally in the users folder the user like this to user Jose opens the command prompt window:

If the prompt looks like this, it means that you are connected to a temporary profile:

When you open a window of command prompt that says your prompt?

Type "exit" to close the command prompt window.

If your user profile is corrupted and is unable to log on repeatedly, you can't challenge or recover - you must create a new Windows user account and copy most (not all) files from your profile corrupted for the new user account and then use this new account in the future.

Note that copy you all files except those that look like this:

Ntuser.dat
Ntuser.dat.log
Ntuser.ini

One of these files has corruption in it, so you don't want to translate the corrupted files (or one that looks like it) in the new user account you created.

For example you would NOT copy files that looks at these profile corrupted in the new profile:

What happened to my stop and restart options?

I have a PC running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. For some time, when I would click on the button 'Start', this might appear a search box, shortcuts to my installed programs and a button that says "Shutdown". To the right of the "Stop" button, there is an arrow right-district I could click other options such as "Restart" and "logout". It could have been some other options, but I'm quite positive that two of my options were to "Restart" and "stop".

Now, my only options are 'Disconnect', 'Switch user' and 'Lock '. I have no option to "Turn off computer" or "restart".

If I choose "Switch User", I get a screen showing icons for all configured users, and from this screen, I have the option "Restart" or "stop".

I don't know what has caused this change. If possible, I would like to go back to the old, when "restart" and "Stop" were options on the initial menu. Can someone tell me if there is a setting I can change to make this happen. (I am and have always bee administrator.)

What happened to the desktop GUI HP 7520 Photosmart e-all in one?

The death of the printhead on my C310 printer, HP support convinced me by buying a given 7520 refurbished. I am familiar with the installation and everything went well and I have the printer wireless connected and working. But instead of the graphical user interface familiar to access printer features (printing, scanning, etc.), installation has placed 2 Notepad format on my desktop which are titled Notepad files: HPSPProgress and HPSolutionsPortal

I have a 64-bit Dell running Windows 7, if it is relevant to the solution of putting a GUI for the printer to my desktop.

For the record, clicking on Start > all programs > HP gives only 3 choices: updated HP, HP Photo Creations and HP Photosmart 7520 series . It contains elements of submenu such as help, study of product improvement, HP, HP Scan, printer Steup & software, product, Support Web site buy supplies, uninstall, update the IP and Wireless Printing Held online.

There is a submenu entry also called HP Photosmart 7520 series and clicking on it gives the aforemention scripts entitled 'HPSPProgress'...... .and then a second window opens with the script HPSolutionsPortal . (Try copy & paste them here by Poles should not exceed 50 KB).

Does anyone have a solution to the dilemma? Somewhere along the line, I downloaded a potential difficulty, hppiw.exe, but it doesn't seem to work.

What happened to search for and replace special characters

I'm a recent update of FrameMaker 9 FrameMaker 11. I use several notations with nonbreaking hyphens and nonbreaking spaces. In version 9, I was able to use the hexadecimal codes in the Find/Replace dialog box and search and replace these ratings. Now in version 11, it does not find these characters. I end up getting more I want.
For example: I want to find
(E Vote, September 12, 2008)
This text has a non-breaking hyphen and showing spaces are nonbreaking. When I entered the document these characters, I used the combination of keys "Esc hyphen:" for the hyphen and "Ctrl + space" for spaces.
When I enter "(E\x15Vote\x10Sept.\x1012,\x102008)" and press the button Search, FrameMaker converts the text to "(E\+Vote\s#Sept.\s#12,\s#2008)" and refers to a "Not Found" statement. I get the error even if I copy the text and paste it into the Find/Replace dialog box. I tried with "Deal", "use wildcards" and whole-word checks both market. I can't find it.
Honestly, I never noticed if verstion 9A made the conversion of \x15 to------+ and dialog of \x10 to \s#, in the search/replace because he always found what I was looking for.
I hope someone can tell me how to solve this problem, because it is a feature I use all the time in FrameMaker. I use hyphens and nonbreaking spaces everywhere in my documents.
I also reported this as a bug because that's what happens if feels like to me. I went out and updated my installation of FrameMaker, thinking that this may have been reported and already corrected.

Windows Vistas: Icons on the desktop and everything what Internet Windows keeps shrinking

I started Mobile has been in my home screen and all the icons were to default size, I put whether. However once that I moved the mouse on my desk all icons have shrunk and got smaller for some unknown reason. Also when I tried to look this problem in internet explorer, everything was normal size in ie, but after I press enter on google, the display of the page automatically went fromm 100% to 10%. I tried to click the 100% several times but it does not change, n is just the small 10%. also, its too has same for firefox. I don't know if it's a virus or a malfunction with panoramas. I checked all my settings ppp and desktop settings and they remain unchanged... nai not installed anything new on my pc during the 24 hours, if im not sure what it is. If anyone has any advice feel free to respond to this. Thank you for your help in advance.

Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.

Two methods you could try...

(1) download and install the freeware VLC
Media Player.

(FWIW... it's always a good idea to create a system)

name the same as the DVD.

Insert the DVD into your DVD drive and close

DVD to the folder that you created.

a format like WMV, so you can play with
most any multimedia player... and correct it in film
