  At this point, the problem of slower Internet connection and loading is probably resolved.  I wanted to try the simpler remedy without doing unnecessary downloads.  Fortunately, there is a Windows update that created a restore point the day before the problem occurred.  I restored the system to this date, and the problem disappeared...
