What VI Client to use: VirtualCenter (vCenter Server) or ESX?

I just made my first installation of vCenter Server 2.5u3 and I need to know what VIC I'd normally be install and use on my desk: one that is bundled with VirtualCenter or the one downloadable from the ESX Server?  My assumption was to use the one that comes with vCenter but stand always true with future updates?

Not really - as long as the servers ESX and Virtual Center are the same version, it will be the same software - there is no difference in the VC VI or the same version ESX Clients download.

  • V5 vSphere Client VI - connectivity to vCenter Server via the non-ideal DNS configuration

Here's a theoretical question that I fight for an answer at the bottom.   For example, the question is:
    ..
You have a VI Client in Active Directory (AD) domain n ° 1 with its own DNS, DNS #1 System.
You have a server vCenter and ESX hosts in AD #2 with its own system DNS, DNS #2 domain
The vCenter server and esx in AD #2 servers have DNS entries in DNS as follows #2...
    vcenter1. DNS2.com
    Esx1.DNS2.com
    ESX2. DNS2.com
However, in AD #1 the same servers have entered DNS DNS #1 as follows...
    vcenter1. DNS1.com
    Esx1.DNS1.com
    ESX2. DNS1.com
The VI in AD #1 client must connect properly on the vCenter server, using the DNS #1 name vcenter1.dns1.com.   It's pretty obvious.  However, what happens when you start a console KVM remotely to one of the virtual machines on VMware ESX Server?  I don't think it'll work.  I think that the VI client is trying to communicate with the service console of the ESX Server hosting the virtual machine by using the DNS entry of the ESX Server that is known to vCenter server, IE esx1.dns2.com, which is not a FULL domain name in the DNS # 1 VI client.
I need to review this issue for VC2.5U6 with ESX 3.5U5 and an implementation of vSphere 5, even though I think that it is the same for all versions.   Incidentally, I read KB749640, talking about DNS but I don't think it covers where the VI client is a DNS domain disparate with DNS names of the esx servers different to the one known by the VC server.
I hope the above is clear.  Can develop if necessary
    Thank you, Jan

    ESX host name is esx1.test.com.

In provided customer vSphre the hostname for connectivity is different. for example: esx1.prod.com, however this name is directed to the same host with intellectual property.

To do this, we edit hosts file c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Yes, but you must have a license for 3.5 systems running server. The vSphere vCenter must be configured to point to this license server. One solution is to install this on the server vSphere vCenter and decomission license server when all the ESX servers running 4.x.

Another option is to keep the old server licenses running and just the new vCenter for that one pint.

We are currently running version host with vCenter Server version 4.1.0 build-26174 ESX 4.0.0 build-345043 and vSphere Clien v4.1.0 Build-345043.

Can someone counsel who is the latest version of vCenter server I can update?

    Concerning

You can upgrade to level either vCenter Server 4.1 update 2 (which was released yesterday) or vCenter Server 5.0 to manage your ESX 4.0 host. With vCenter Server 5.0, are supported versions 4.x host except ESXi 4.0 U2. See http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php

  • Virutal VCenter Server on ESX 3.5?

We are a boutique of ESX 3.5.  Our first step in the upgrade to vSphere is the construction of a vCenter Server.  We want to build it as a virtual machine.  My question is: can we build a virtual vCenter on a host ESX 3.5 Server?  Or should it be built on a vSphere host?

    Thank you

    Mary

There is no problem on this building on an ESX 3.5 host - as long as the virtual machine running an operating system that is supported by vCenter 4.0

  • Difference between vCenter server and ESX server

    Hello

I'm new to the development of VMware. Can you please explain me how ESX server differs from the VirtualCenter Server?

According to my knowledge, ESX server is the one on which the real images are created and deployed while VirtualCenter manages ESX (one at a time) servers. ability to manage multiple ESX servers, both 'vSphere' a.

My understanding is correct. Kindly answer my question.

ESX (later - ESX4) is a system of bare metal operating that you can install directly on your physical hardware. This is the hypervisor layer that helps you to run multiple virtual machines on a single piece of material. The heart of ESX is the VMkernel which does all the magic (resouce management VM.. .and much). Talk about vCenter (previously Center Virtual Server) is a management application that you can install on a separate physical computer (you can even have a virtual vCenter). Once your vCenter is allowed, you can begin to manage the ESX servers.

There are two ways to manage ESX. One is that you can directly connect to your ESX Server with root password and manage it. Otherwise, connect the server vCenter, add the ESX Server so that your vCenter it manages.

vCenter resembles a management station from which you can manage your multiple ESX servers.

  • With regard to the registration of plugin for web client package in vcenter server

    Hello

I am able to create the package (.zip file) plugin, using Eclipse plugin virgo and able to deploy and test the same thing with the serenity customer as described in the SDK tutorial.

To register for my plugin package as an extension with vcneter server, I followed steps below:

1 using the perl of the vi perl SDK code, and I am able to register the plugin and can see the crowd as well.

But I am unable to see the plugin in vcenter server. As newspapers are not get generated for web client. (Maintenance records is not created. All the required services are running).

Please suggest any script I can use to deploy the plugin for the production phase. And also the steps to generate logs.

    Thank you very much.

I have attached a java program showing how to register a vSphere Client Web plugin with vCenter server. This program is not recommended for use in production because it does not check the certificates.

Also this program will work if your plugin zip archive is located at the url "http://". If your zip file is at url 'https://', then you must provide the digital fingerprint of the server in the server property of the

Extension data object. You can do the same way that the property of the customer was populated in the provided code. Here is the link to the Extension object where you can find all of the properties of an object to extend VMware vSphere 5.1

  • Locking ESXi 4.1 mode access confirmation no access to the vCenter Server

    Hello

ESXi 4.1.  I see options in conflict with access to a crowd that had lockdown normal mode activated via a server vCenter VM on a host in the cluster.  The vCenter server that sits on one of the hosts in the cluster lockeddown then became inaccessible or unresponsive connectivity wise.  So no connectivity between vCenter VM or VM vCenter and hosts.  Is someone can confirm if you can connect to this host lockedown by DCUI with root and disable lockdown configuration to allow the vSphere client to then connect to the host with root and troubleshoot the server vCenter VM?

I read in some messages that this is only possible if the vCenter VM is in place and the communication to the host.  I also read that it is possible no matter what the State of the vCenter server once Total lockdown (disabling DCUI) is not enabled.

I have this reference of the 'The new lock in ESXi 4.1 Mode' blog http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2010/09/the-new-lockdown-mode-in-esxi-41.html

"With active locking Mode, the only direct access to the host that remains open is through the DCUI. This allows to perform administrative tasks limited outside vCenter Server, such as restarting the management agents and the display of the log files. In addition, you can also disable Mode of Lockdown since the DCUI. This can be useful if vCenter Server is down or unavailable, and you want to return to a direct management of the host. Normally, without locking Mode, any user to the Administrator role can open a session in the DCUI.  However, in lock Mode, the root password is necessary; no other user can connect.

    Can anyone confirm.

Any other person who may not be sure these questions, I can confirm that with root credentials, you can connect to the host directly and disable the lock mode regardless of the availability of vCenter.  Only if the Total lock mode turned on, or should I say DCUI is disabled, then you have no choice but to go through vCenter or reinstall and reconfigure the network.  VM would be always available if local or have to be reassembled and re inventoried etc.

  • vCenter Server Essentials

I'm confused on what licensing "Kit Essentials" gives me to vCenter Server.  He start allows vCenter Server (SSO, web client, server) on a physical server dedicated outside the three ESXI hosts that are included with the Kit?  The free 60-day trial is super confusing because it unlocks EVERYTHING and does not really specify what I will remain once I applied the keys only Essentials.  I rather not would waste resources on my three ESXI hosts since I was a spare physical server that can host the server vCenter Server very well.

    Thank you

The vCenter Server deployment option are the same as for all other editions. You can use the vCenter Server Appliance or vCenter based on Windows Server, you can install on a Windows Server to address physical or virtual system.

  • VCenter Server virtual to the different host

I have a little a conundrum.  I forgot to set up a cluster in Vcenter before creating my virtual servers, including my Vcenter Server virtual machine.

What I do is move my Vcenter server to a host (not in the cluster) to another computer (host in the cluster).  I am sure that if I try to use VMotion to do weird things since using Vmotion the VCenter Server virtual I lose the connection with Vcenter for the transfer and the operation fails.

I think I should stop Vcenter and then remove it manually from one host and importing it into another host in the cluster, but I don't know how to do this.

What is the best (and safest) way to Edifier?

    Jim

No vmotion will work as long as the hosts are configured approriately and are part of the same data - center

  • vCenter Server Open Source

I would really like to try/explore the Linux vCenter which 'so-called' exists.  However, in the downloads section, you can find the source code.  There is no documentation (that I can find), I can't find an installer of any kind.  I don't see even a virtual appliance for it.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

It is not an open source version of vCenter Server.

What you see are the Open source (like tomcat) used in vCenter Server part.

But are not enough to make a vCenter to work (without ads) on Linux.

There is a project to make a port for Linux (note that this does not mean that he will be a free software or open source full). But I'm under the non-delivery report for the next products so I can't say much more.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server to vCenter Server 5.1 5.1 update 1 when the SQL database is remote and vCenter Server Heartbeat is installed

    Hi guys,.

I'm in the middle of an upgrade to vSphere 5.1 5.1 vSphere update 1. I have vCenter protected by HB and SQL on a separate computer (also protected by HB) I also run Syslog, Update Manager and Proxy authentication on vCenter.

I've successfully upgraded HB on all 4 nodes (2 x vCenter & 2 x SQL) and started the upgrade components on the secondary according to the •vCenter Server Heartbeat 6.5 server and vCenter Update 1 Installation on Windows Server 2008 when the secondary server is virtual (PDF) http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vcenter-server-heartbeat-65-u1-installation-windows-2008-virtual-guide.pdf

    I got to step 3.c

    3. change the primary/active server role:

a launch of the vCenter Server Heartbeat wizard configure server and click the tab of the Machine to change the server role for the current server (primary) to the active State and click Finish.

b using the Service Control Manager, start the Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter service.

c using the vCenter Server Heartbeat Console, check that all the status icons on the server: summary page are green indicating that the boot process is completed and protected from all the services are started.

d using the Service Control Manager, stop the service Server Heartbeat of VMware vCenter.

As the vCenter service does not start, I'm stuck at this point. As far as I'm concerned, the error is quite logical. I've updated vCenter using the secondary server, and then I'm trying to connect (according to the guide) with another version that breaks down.

If I continue with the services stop and launch the installer SSO, it is trying to perform an uninstall!

Did I miss something in this upgrade?

    Concerning

    Ciaran

Hi guys, VMware have finally updated the documentation to reflect the right way forward: https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/heartbeat_pubs.html U1 6.5 Select from the menu drop-down and you'll see the last date of update for each of the documentation is now 10/10/2013. The guide States now specifically to restore the vCenter database before proceeding with any other measure, this is copied below for convenience: "the upgrade of the main server of the upgrade process further guess upgrading the secondary server completed successfully. Procedure 1 before continuing the upgrade process, perform a restore of the database of vCenter Server, Single Sign-On database, VMware Update Manager database and SSL certificates that were backed up in step 4 on the secondary server. regards Ciaran

  • Configuration of SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition for vCenter Server 5.1

    Greetings to all seasons.

Kind of a newbie here. That's my lab environment.

I have always used the vCenter Server install Simple option that also installs the shipped Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Express edition.

Now, I do an eval of vSphere 5.1 and I want to manually configure a database server using the Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.

I know how to install the database server and it works. But I do not know how exactly set up a database for vCenter Server.

I looked at the guide Configuration / Installation of vSphere and I don't seem to be able to follow the preparation vCenter Server databases section, because I'm not a person to the database. Y at - it any other guide or a blog, I can follow? I searched a lot and found everything I was looking for. Thought I would ask here.

Here are the virtual machines I have.

    Lab - DC1 (domain controller)

    Lab - DC2 (domain controller)

    Lab-SQL1 (SQL 2008 R2, Enterprise Edition)

Lab-SQL2 (SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise - subsequently configure failover clustering)
