Shared photos are all housed in iCloud, but do not count against your storage iCloud and will stay there until they are deleted by you or a contributor deletes them.   You can use any image for your image file into account.

  If you have access to any Windows 7 computer, you can copy photos from default account on a USB key and place them in a folder on the PC in Windows 8.

  In Windows 7, these photos are stored in the following folder.
