Where to install Vcenter

Hi all

I was in charge of the implementation of a Dell VRTX (5u chassis consolidated with two blades, shared storage and internal switch servers). I installed two server ESXi blades, my question is where can I install vCenter and vSphere to get the operational environment?  Do I need another physical server for this?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Install ESXi vSphere on blades servers, connect to the ESXi vSphere using the vSphere Client (installed on your office desktop) and create a virtual machine for vCenter Server (Windows version) or deploy the vCenter Server Appliance.

After install or deploy the vCenter, add the two ESXi vSphere vCenter... and depending on your edition of vSphere, create the cluster and configure HA/DRS.

Since you have a small environment, you don't need an additional physical server just to use as the server vCenter.

I have three PowerEdge 1950 III on the way.  When I ordered them, I realized that one would be used for the management and the other two were used as ESX host.  Looking at the specifications, all three are configured exactly the same thing with two Quad core Xeon and 16 GB of memory.  We are a small shop and I can count the intial VM that I create on the one hand, but dedicate one of these vCenter servers looks like a waste of resources.  Am I right to think that way?  Should I use this third-party server as an ESX host and add to the transformation of resources?  I have an old PE 1650 including a hospital more great gift to us and it is just collecting dust.  Should I use instead?  I looked at the system requirements for Vcenter and a double quad with 16 GB of memory seems like overkill. I also read that you can create a virtual machine and install VCenter on that, but that doesn't make sense to me at all.  Why installing VCenter on the same infrastructure that's supposed to be a Manager?

Where did you guys installed vCenter and how is it that works for you.  I am very open to suggestions.

  • Do not know where to install vCenter - VMs are domain controllers

We have a small network with two physical servers, running two virtual machines. I'm unable to install vCenter on these, because an error is thrown that vCenter cannot be installed on a domain controller. I have a workstation is just used to manage the virtual machines and have the vSphere client installed in addition to vRanger Pro connection. The problem with installing vCenter on this machine is vRanger connection vCenter recommends NOT to be installed on the same system. All other systems on the network are workstations that have connected users throughout the day. Y at - it an option that I'm on?

    Thank you

Perhaps the simplest is to set up an additional VM on which you are installing vCenter Server. Since the VMware version 5.0 introduced the vCenter Server Appliance that eliminates the need for an additional Windows license. However, as I know the vCenter Server Appliance is not supported by vRanger connection again!

  • Problems after installing vCenter has 5.1 - no vCenter Server found

Sorry, I'm new to this and I'm having a problem installing vCenter 5.1 has on Windows Server 2008 R2 by using the simple installation.  After completing the installation without mistakes, I starts the Web Client vSphere, connect and it comes up with no vCenter server and a message that says "to get started installation is a vCenter Server system or permission to access an existing vCenter Server system.  I'm on my 4th time well and it is consistent in the result, so I figure I should ask.

If it's important, Windows Server is not a member of Active Directory, DNS works forward and reverse, I tried the IP address and FQDN name.

I don't know where to be troubleshooting it.  It is my first installation of vCenter. I checked all the services, and they are running.

I watched some log files and it seems pretty clear that something is trying to talk about something and is to be rejected, but I have no idea why.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

During the simple installation of vCenter Server 5.1 method, it will first install the SSO part. During this part, you will be asked to create a password for a user called admin@system-domain. Please note that this user is only for the management of permissions within the standards body. That's why you can't see any instance of vCenter SSO. After completing the installation of SSO, the vCenter Server installation will be lauch. During the installation, the wizard will ask you about the password previously configured for the admin@system-domain user, enter it, and then click Next.

Second, on the next prompt you should enter a global domain, user, or a local group who will be recognized by the SSO as vCenter Administrator service. Then complete the installation. In the end, make sure the "SSL Port" under the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ADAM_VMwareVCMSDS\Parameters registry key is REG_DWORD with a decimal value of 636.

    See: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1023864

After that, open the vSphere Client or the webclient service, enter your vCenter Server server's FULL domain name and and a name/password user (domain\username), which has permission such vCenter administrator mentioned in part II.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards.

  • Best place for installing VCenter with a host

Where is the best Traghetti for me installing vCenter when we only have a single host server? I installed version track on a virtual machine, but this doesn't seem to be the safest way to do it. If I lose this virtual machine or the host, I won't have access to the administration. If it was installede on a separate server?

Welcome to the community - by using vCenter to manage a single ESXi host is an exaggeration, since you can manage the ESXi host directly connecting you by using the vSphere client. Given that you can manage the ESXi host directly, it can run on a VM.

You build your environment and add more hosts and implement VMware HA you will continue to be able to run vCenter in a virtual machine, because vCenetr is only used to configure HA and is not required for the failover of the HA.

  • Help! Installed vCenter Eval, now VIC prompt for license key

    Hello

We ran two hosts running ESXi managed by VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client for a few weeks - I think that it's all free software?  I wait until the 21st to order vSphere Essentials but in the meantime thought I could trial vCenter.  I installed vCenter on my laptop but never used, but when I started to VIC I started having a recall notice.  Evaluation having been exhausted, but instead to return to the previous situation where I could use VIC to individually manage the ESXi host, now when I open VIC I get the following message:

"ESX Server is returned to its previous state of license when the evaluation period expires.  The following features are no longer available: Consolidated Backup.  To enable these features, you must upgrade your ESX Server license. »

When I try and start one of my virtual machines, I get the following message:

"There are not enough licenses to complete this operation. "Select the host containing the virtual machine, you are trying to turn on, click the Configuration tab and change the licenses.

When I connect to my other host I don't get either the message above, so it seems have triggered something on my first host.  All I want to do is continue to run ESXi and VIC as before I installed vCenter - can anyone advise please?  Should I put in the license key you get after registering to download ESXi?

    Thanks in advance,

    roadsweeper.

If your vCenter evaluation has expired, you will need to manage it welcomes as standalone.  When you download ESXi you should have a s/n.  This key must be added where it says "use serial number."

  • 2 locations to "Program Files" - one on the C partition - and another on the D partition is possible (or option) so that you can 'choose' where to install a program in particular?

    Hello

It's my first time display questions on a forum like this, so I'll try to explain in detail what I have (somehow... :)).
Is it possible to have 2 "Program Files" location - one on the C partition - and the other on the D partition so that you can 'choose' where to install a program in particular? I don't really want to get rid from where 'move' the 'Program Files' folder on my C partition (I just do a clean reinstall of Windows XP), BUT I would like to be able to install several programs on the partition D place on C 'by default. "

Here's the question: I have several programs that have no option to 'choose' where should be installed - they'll automatically C\Program Files. I want to install it on the D partition. If this is not possible, how can I transfer to the new location (once they have already been installed) in their entirety so that they are functional. I don't want to keep the remains, references and 'shortcuts' on the C partition. These programs should begin to malfunction, I have freedom to wipe the D partition and reinstall the programs without messing up the heart of the system.

I'd appreciate any help, advice and ideas. Regarding my computer experience, I'd put myself in the novice category, detailed explanations would be a lifesaver! Thank you.

Programs come with their own setup program and the program developer decides to give the possibility to choose the download location or not

Regarding your concern about to spoil the central system

Whenever you install a program, that it will create many items inside your main drive where windows is installed (in this case C:\) to install a program that affects the system to another drive does not affect your system

If you update your Windows, it could install too last driver update as optional.

  • Installing VCenter 6

    I have two questions

When trying to install Vcenter 6 I get the following message

User group ' NT Service\All SERVICE doesn't have the user right "log as a service".» What can I add in the GPO? I don't see this group in AD.

I also have another SQL Server. On the server I have tried installing Vcenter (windows server 2008 R2), I created a DSN and successfully tested the connection to the database. However when I get to the part to find the DSN in the installation he finds nothing. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

  • Why MS SQL server is required for installing vcenter?

Why MS SQL server is required for installing vcenter?

You need a database to contain the vCenter Server information. It may be SQL/Oracle. By default, an installation of SQL Express happens if you do not want to install a complete SQL Server blown - it will have maximum but limits work for smaller infrastructure.

    Exact wording of the documentation:

vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager require databases to store and organize the data from the server.

Each instance of vCenter server must have its own database. vCenter Server instances cannot share the same database schema. Several databases of vCenter Server can reside on the same database server, or they can be split between multiple database servers. Databases Oracle, who have the notion of schema objects, you can run several unique vCenter Server instances in a database server if you are the owner of a different pattern for each instance of vCenter server, or use a server of Oracle database dedicated for each instance of vCenter server.

You don't need to install a new server database for the vCenter Server installation to work. During installation, you can point the vCenter Server system for the supported existing databases. vCenter Server supports IBM DB2, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. vCenter Update Manager supports Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. For a list of supported database server versions, see the vSphere compatibility tables tohttp://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf on the VMware vSphere documentation Web site.
