Where to install vSphere...

Hi all...  Just recently, we bought 3 Dell R710s and plan using those of our virtual envirnoment.  Once install ESXi on each of these servers where am I suppose to install vSphere?  We buy a server separate mangement and I can't put it on a virtual machine, since I need vSphere to create virtual machines.

Thoughts, Suggestions?

Thank you

Bob

EAST of vSphere, ESXi (or ESX) with the manangement Add-ons...

If you talk about vCenter, then just make a virtual machine on one of the hosts (on the shared storage), and then start here by setting her up. I did it more than once with great success... Given the vCenter Server as a virtual machine has several advantages, not the least of which is able to vMotion if the host on which it is actually will Dim.

What type of SAN used for the virtual machine? What you install ESXi on (on the physical host computers)? Although you can install ESXi for flash drives, I still prefer to install on a pair of SAS drives in a RAID 1 configuration. You do not have very large need, or fast (anything over 10 k rpm and you're golden) to do the job. You could do it with SATA drives, but you're better off with SAS (highest number of reliability). I also like the RAID 1 configuration in the event of disk failure. Just more resilient to failure, or one less point of single failure...

BTW, I would also use a real SQL Server for the database for vCenter parts and it is. IMO, far better than that of SQL Express that comes with the installation program. Of course, you CAN go with SQL Express, but you'll have more options under full SQL Management... Do the SQL Server as an another VM (so you will first make two VM) or use an existing SQL Server (for now)... If you use an existing SQL Server, I would intend to migrate to virtual as soon as you can.

  • Can I buy vSphere 5.0, but install vSphere 4.1 instead

    Hello

Can I buy vSphere 5.0, but install vSphere 4.1 instead? I think I would need to download the VMware Partner Portal installation files?

vSphere 4 can not run on the licenses of right of vRAM, where the license downgrade to the old model

I must point out that it is not by the processor but per-socket CPU

Also the two vSphere 4 and vSphere 5 uses the CPU socket licenses, vSPhere 5 have just a heading of vRAM according to license type and average used vRAM

Thus on vSphere 5 you would allow still all 1 CPU sockets, and depending on the used vRAM you could need an extra license to inflate the vRAM

If you have for example a HP BL460c G7 has 2 Sockets and about 338 GB of physical RAM

  • Cannot install vSphere on ML350 G6 Server

    Hello

Got a new new ML350 G6 and I am unable to install vSphere 4 on it.  I get to the part where it starts to copy the files and I get the following message.  See attached screenshot: anyone know what this could be?

My first guess would be a corrupted/cdrom image.

Check the MD5Sum of download itself (it must be on the correct site) as well as on your CDROM after you burn it.  Most likely, it is the CDROM that is the problem, then try burning again.

  • 2 locations to "Program Files" - one on the C partition - and another on the D partition is possible (or option) so that you can 'choose' where to install a program in particular?

    Hello

It's my first time display questions on a forum like this, so I'll try to explain in detail what I have (somehow... :)).
Is it possible to have 2 "Program Files" location - one on the C partition - and the other on the D partition so that you can 'choose' where to install a program in particular? I don't really want to get rid from where 'move' the 'Program Files' folder on my C partition (I just do a clean reinstall of Windows XP), BUT I would like to be able to install several programs on the partition D place on C 'by default. "

Here's the question: I have several programs that have no option to 'choose' where should be installed - they'll automatically C\Program Files. I want to install it on the D partition. If this is not possible, how can I transfer to the new location (once they have already been installed) in their entirety so that they are functional. I don't want to keep the remains, references and 'shortcuts' on the C partition. These programs should begin to malfunction, I have freedom to wipe the D partition and reinstall the programs without messing up the heart of the system.

I'd appreciate any help, advice and ideas. Regarding my computer experience, I'd put myself in the novice category, detailed explanations would be a lifesaver! Thank you.

Programs come with their own setup program and the program developer decides to give the possibility to choose the download location or not

Regarding your concern about to spoil the central system

Whenever you install a program, that it will create many items inside your main drive where windows is installed (in this case C:\) to install a program that affects the system to another drive does not affect your system

  • How can I know raid 0 SSD when I install Vsphere ESXi 6?

    Hello

I would say for me to understand in advance because I can't speak English well.

Today, I tried to install ESXi vsphere 6 on ssd drive that put in raid0. RAID0 consisted of two 500 GB drives.

When I install Windows Server R2 2012 to check the status of the raid 0, I can see good about 1 TB drive and when I try to install vsphere 6 ESXi, I see two 500 GB drives. It didn't consist of raid 0

Why can't vsphere ESXi 6 recognize raid 0 disk?

Frankly, defining VMware products is the first time today. Please explain and tell me to resolve method.

This questions is more likely caused by an unsupported software RAID controller. VMware supports only hardware RAID controllers that have the physical disks and logical volumes for operating systems. Some hardware manufacturers provide additional drivers for their own material as well.

  • Using the hard drive on HP Proliant after installing VSPhere ESXi 5

I recently installed VSphere ESXi 5 on a HP Proliant server. I've migrated several virtual machines successfully on, with access via client vsphere. I'm trying to find out whether the server is in Raid 5. I called HP and they said that the only way to know is to insert the smart startup disk. I inserted, but I don't know how to access the disk. I know this is probably very simple, but I'm lost. Thanks for your help.

It depends on if you a raid controller enough disks and supported your server to take a RAID5 configuration.

Download the HP smart start ISO, ILO mount or burn a CD to boot off the coast so that you can launch the utility of configuration of matrices (ACU). It's really something that should have been done before the ESXi installation.

    See the example below;

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages about installing vSphere 5 on USB

I am having trouble to make the iscsi boot and mused with a temporary workaround.
I want to install vSphere 5 on a USB key, boot on USB and when all the problems with boot iscsi are resolved, use vMotion to migrate the virtual machine to another ESX host.

What are the advantages and disadvantages regaring USB-install?

Maybe it's even better that run start iscsi.

    Hello

We have no difference between USB install and install ESXi on hard drive. all functions and features are the same. You have following additional configuration on USB Installer if necessary

    -Remote Syslog configuration

-Netdump configuration or change the coredump on hard drive partition by creating additional VMKcore on hard drive.

-Try to use the qualified USB key (refer to the hardware vendor documentation).

Not looking for any specific limitation other than mentioned above.

    Thank you
