  If you use OS with 4 GB of RAM, 32-bit which could well be a big part of your problem.

  When I switched to 64 bit OS with 12 GB of RAM, CS4 has become rock solid. I've never had this crash, running out of resources, or have crash / 'not compliant unknown error' on renders.

  If you don't have a 64-bit, you must jack up to 12 to 16 GB RAM.

  Adobe has quite low minimum requirements listed for CS4, but they are not ashamed to say it is really designed for 64-bit, high RAM to run the best for HD editing.

  Just a thought ;-)
