Why my defrag took almost 24 hours?

My HP Pavilion dv6 started an automatic process of height, last night.  He has been slain on this stage of defragmentation for nearly 24 hours.  Why is it so much to take?  This never happened before.  I need this computer for a project and I can't waste any more time.

It is a process of HP, and it may have found an error on the disk. Look in the Windows event logs and see if something's which are listed there. If the HP program creates a clean log file, you can browse any error that might have caused this long of a delay in finishing.

I inherited a HP dv9700 slightly backward, and the first things I did were restored in one day and then get rid of all the HP bloatware. Vista does a pretty decent job of maintain the disk defragmented, and most of the other HP software is redundant junk. Of course, that's just my opinion; others may have a different, but that's OK, too :-)

  • Why my OS took so much space and how can I turn off automatic Back-ups?

Hi, I'm opperating on Windows Vista Basic Home Edition on top of a HP540 Tower, which has 160 GB hard drive.

Except for the 20 GB Partition, I stayed with 129 GB to install a fresh on o/s.

After installing my o/s and updates the 7Gig to clean Documents saved from after installation.

I was left with 99 Go!

    Something wrong without a doubt!

Even more, I'm losing memory on my hard drive like there is no tomorrow, 30 GB in 4 days!

It seems every time I'm streaming videos, or even just to watch videos, an external hard drive.

    I lose about 1 or 2 GB!

This led me to believe that the system backup and restore several coppies of his car, then

All of a sudden my disk space is increased from 69BG to 99 GB.

I still don't know what happened to the other Go 20 or 21.

Although this seems to be a difficulty, with in a few minutes that the backup has been busy writing far still and in

15 minutes that I had fallen to 97.3 GB and deminuishing.

Why my OS took so much space and how can I turn off automatic Back-ups?

    Thank you very much!

Nothing wrong as far as I can see.  A Windows installation will take about 20 GB to 30 GB so it's fine, and you will lose even more space for virtual memory to system management file, hibernation, system restore points file and so on.  Although the "30 GB in four days" is perhaps a little on the high side, considering that you have just installed Windows, there are a lot of household, creating files and so forth go on these days.

With the help of disk cleanup to delete these files from system restore is a bad choice, because they are created to ensure the security of your system and allow you to recover from any problems that may require them.

If disk space is as big a problem to get a bigger hard drive and let the system restore to do its job.

  • System Restore Windows 8 has been restoring for almost 2 hours. How long should it take?

New windows machine 8. Installed AVG anti-virus requiring a reboot. It wouldn't restart. Kept giving me the dpc_watchdog... error. (more & on & above) So I chose to do a system restore to last Friday. I saw him start & I left the room for a while.  He has been restoring for almost 2 hours now. I noticed the "finalizing" file restore less than an hour ago. Is this normal? I have to do something else?

    Hi Marcia,

I understand that the system restore takes a long time to restore your computer.

System restore usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the data has changed since the date of the restoration up to the date where the restoration is underway.
If the computer is blocked, do a hard reset. Press the power button for about 10 seconds. Once the computer shuts down, stop and try again and follow the steps.

Follow the steps mentioned below and perform a restore of the system from the Windows recovery environment. Check if it helps.

    (a) Insert the disc to install 8 Windows; Click on repair your system.
    (b) click the Advanced Boot Options.
    (c) click Start Windows settings.
    (d) If you are prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
((e) (f) If you are using the Windows installation disc, click on system restore.
    (f) click about to restore during which the system worked very well.
    (g) click on apply, click OK.

Hope this helps and let us know if you need more assistance. We will be happy to help.

  • HP Support Assistant Defragent disk running 16 hours and counting...

I bought this HP Pavilion P6755 (Windows 7 64-bit) about two months and it is a great machine to use.  However later I had on two occasions has experienced a blue screen, I thought I could used the pre-installed HP Support Assistant to try to improve the performance of the machine.  Then I started the update and he passed smoothly up to the part of Microsft Windows Disk defragment, where trotted as always...

I tried twice, the first run, I let it go for about 14 hours with no luck. the second time I let the process of development for more than 24 hours and when I came back to check it was still marching tune-up?

I closed this update to half way and started the window of defragmentation tool, and it took less than half an hour to complete the process without any problem at all.

So what is happening with this update under Hp Support Assistant?

I have ensured that the Windows 7 operating system has the latest updates, HP Support Assistant in its latest version.

Another thing so: HP ProBook I use at wwork completes the process of development without problem at all.

Anyone here has the same problem?

My PC has i5 and 1 TB hard drive; I used the HP Support Assistant to perform a check of the HARD drive and that you did not no problem either.

Thanks for any input or possible solution.

    Hello
    Welcome to the HP Forum!

I recommend that you update the HP Support Assistant. Go on the web portal of support for your office and in the software & Drivers section find the update, download and install it. I would have linked directly to the update for you, but you left the last alphanumeric (s) for your office product name identifier.

There are very few things that keep loading an iPad. Some of these (other charger plugged into a good outlet, different cable) you have already tried. Others are:

  • Defragment - more than 7 hours

While making a DVD with Roxio, encountered an error message 80004005 error during video encoding. Roxio support site recommended to defrag my computer.  I've implemented to defragment last night and this morning, it still says defragmentation.  Wonder if it is in a loop or it is actually still defragmentation.  How will I know?  Thanks for help.

I doubt the fragmentation is the question.

That said normal Windows Defragmenter is very slow (because it works by design as a background process), and is one that actually tells you how fragmented of the disc has a much faster way to defrag Vista. And it is easy to use.

I reboot and then open a command prompt by typing cmd.exe in the start of Vista box (bottom left click the ORB). Now right-click the cmd.exe program that will appear at the top of the list and choose "run as Administrator"

Now copy and paste or type exactly the following and just press ENTER. If there is different, substitute your drive letter c.

    Defrag c: - v w

It will take a few minutes to scan the HARD drive and giving a detail on the report of the screen and then it launches into the Defragmenter.

It is finished when the "C:\Windows\system 32 > message reappears at the bottom."

Do not use PC or turn off until it does. The first time, is that it can take a while, but much faster than the standard defragmentation.

In addition, if you use the command

    Defrag c: - a - v

So who's going to generate just the report to see how bad things are. In general I like to stay below 3 per cent fragmentation.

I'm planning to defrag turned OFF (because you found its slow) and defrag just as and when you use the command prompt. After the first run, which can take some time following executions are very fast, usually for me around 3 or 4 minutes.

Hope that helps, it of safe and well worth it IMO.

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

If you update the drivers manually, then it's a good idea to disable the facilities of driver under Windows

older and cause problems. If updates offers a new driver and then HIDE it (right click on it), then
