Why Windows Explorer applies LZW compression in my TIFF RGB 48-bit files?

OS: WIndows 7 Pro 64-bit

Hardware: Intel Core i7-2600 with 8 GB of Ram

Scanning software: VueScan 64 - bit version 9.1.13

Scanning: PlusTek 7600i

I scan color negatives and save them to TIFF with RGB 48-bit (16 bits per color).

The VueScan software correctly saves files without LZW compression LZW does work well with 16-bit "noisy" data-"LZW compression" frequently makes bigger files due to the large number of distinct values that must be added to the dictionary.

If I use Windows Explorer to change the Date to a file label, it modifies the indicator of Compression TIFF (uncompressed) of 1 to 5 (LZW compression) and applies the compression.  The file INCREASES in size by about 20% (of 95.6 MB to 115.8 MB).

Now, I understand that it could be argued that Explorer trying to make efficient use of space SO the compression made the smaller file, but what happens in reality is worse than before because the file takes MORE space AND the system now has the burden of "decompression" the file when it is opened.

Windows Explorer should NOT add compression of TIFF files (or files in my opinion) unless specifically requested to do so.

Thank you

Chris

You probably don't want to disable one at a time.  Try groups of 20 or 30 at a time.  I'm not sure you need restart between trials.  Some extensions of the sample I tested were immediately disabled and right click on a file did not show the options for this extension.  It wouldn't surprise me that you will not be able to disable each extension.  Work with those that you can and see if something helps you.  Look in the 'File name' column and suspect that any file that begins with "------" or a drive letter that does not correspond to a hard drive on your system.

If you do not want to use RegScanner, do the same with Regedit.  Run Regedit (start-> Run-> 'regedit'), simple click on 'My Computer' to select it, make an edition-> find, enter your------the field search and click "next".  It stops at the next occurrence.  Press the F3 key to find the one that follows after that.  I think you will find that there are many references to '-', some occurring in places that you probably want to touch.  Unless you know what you're doing, editing the registry can be dangerous.  Always back up the registry first before making any changes.

  • Why Windows Explorer stops working?

On my newly installed copy of Windows 7 x 64 Home Premium, I keep getting a message "Windows Explorer has stopped working: Windows Explorer has stopped working and needs to be closed", whenever I try to access things like my DHM and trash. I've had this problem since I bought this computer had Vista on it. I have a feeling it has to do with a program that is not compatible with the shell, but I don't know who he is. For the most part, I check all my programs against the Windows 7 compatibility chart to ensure they don't cause problems. This problem, while I'm sure that he cause any performance issue apart from not being able to access things that work out of Windows Explorer, has irritated the heck out of me for months. I really want to solve it, but nobody seems to have a definitive answer. I did the System File Checker and it found no problem, so I guess that my installation is fine and it's certainly a few incompatible program, but which. I could list the programs that I have installed to see if anyone of you knows no incompatibility.

    Installed programs:
Version of the Adobe Flash 10 Plugin
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS4 x 64 (tests)
    Adobe Bridge CS4
    GOAL 7
    CCleaner
iTunes x 64 (and all the programs that came with it: Quicktime, Hello, Apple Software Update, etc.)
    Microsoft Office 2003 Professional
    Mozilla Firefox 3.5.5
    Norton Internet Security 2010
    VLC Media Player 1.0.3
    Windows Live Essentials
    Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin
    WinRar x 64 3.9.0

Apart from drivers, that's all, I installed. I also have programs that come with those are installed. I would also like to add that I just clean installed this OS yesterday so everything on this list was installed yesterday and it's NOT Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, just in case there is no confusion.

    Any help is very appreciated.

    Uninstalling Firefox
I tried all the latest versions of Firefox, even Firefox 3.6 beta 1, Firefox uninstall is the only solution currently.

  • Whenever I try to open a folder, windows Explorer stops and restarts. How can I open my files?

When I double click on a folder to open it or try to open it in the start menu, an alert tells me that windows Explorer has to close, and then restart. I can't open the windows. • Why Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close?

I see far too often. I have not the slightest idea why. I have some assistance please? Nothing seems to happen when this happens with the exception of this box and I need to close it by clicking on the button does not send. I do not need to restart my PC or anything. I just go forward

The only real details I can give this whole mess are that I usually just go back on my shelf and taken out of the screen saver when this happens... I think so.

I wanted to say that I clean installed Windows XP a few months ago to help the support of Microsoft to solve a problem that I and many others have been with our Security Essentials. After that I did. I did tons of other stuff like obtaining drivers, then reinstall Office 2003 and my other CD or downloads, and then I got my Docs from my MAXTOR One Touch USB hard drive and added max RAM and had the system recognize that, with the help of people on this site. If someone could really know, the area offers to show me that contains the error report. I think that I've even bothered recently to post stupid codes he tells me when I click on this link. But nobody seemed to care to jump in and give me some help to solve this. Can someone please help me with this please?

And I had to get my cell phone for Active Sync via bluetooth or a cable with my Outlook. And then it became my Kodak dual lens camera to upload photos with a cable using Easy Share. Blah... blah... blah.

A few more details: after that I just got this error box, my phone never seem to connect through bluetooth for my PC to upload a photo. So I decided that part of Windows must be ventilated at the moment. So I decided that I needed to restart my PC. But he would not do. I clicked on start > shut down > Restart and it closed a few things a little slowly and almost needed me for click End Now on 2 things but they eventually ended up themselves. Then he stopped just closing. I waited and waited. Finally, after a few minutes (5?), I gave up waiting and forced a shutdown with the slider switch. Now he stopped and then I restarted. It started quite slowly and connected me slowly enough too once I entered my Windows password. He is finally responsible for my office and made running cCleaner, Driver Scanner from Uniblue and my FileHippo Update Checker. That everything was too long.

Now, he would finally download my pic with bluetooth.

So, could I still once beg you someone to jump in and help me solve this problem? Please?

  • Why Windows Explorer crash if I shift-delete a directory that has been created as part of the 'libraries' of in the Exporer in the pane hierarchy of directory on the left side of the Explorer?

I just discovered a very basic bug in Windows 7 file Explorer:

Open the folder "libraries." Select any item under 'Libraries', for example 'Documents '. In the hierarchy of folders in the 'Documents' left right click and select 'New'-> 'folder '. Select the directory newly created in the hierarchy of folders (always in the left frame of the Explorer). Right-click in the right frame and select 'New'-> 'text Document '. Open the newly created document, enter text and save it. Now, again select the new folder in the hierarchy of folders in the left frame and type + . An error message appears stating something like "C:\Users\Public\Documents\FOO refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Make sure that the disc is inserted correctly, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it can't be located, the information may have been moved to another location. »
