  OK, I wanted to just make sure the correct standard troubleshooting had been done. Because it does not sound like a system problem (this is why a system restore has been previously recommended), I recommend that you try a tool launched by Microsoft called Fixit.   According to the Sony e-support Web site: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=DCRHC36&SelectOS=42 Windows Vista & Windows 7 already have the right drivers for your handycam. However, you can click on the link above, select your operating system and download the drivers. If you then open the Device Manager, select your handycam (you will probably find it under devices in the imaging device manager) and right click on it. In the drop-down menu, select Properties. In the Properties window, select the tab drivers and check if you have downloaded the driver version is "superior" to those already installed. If the version number is the same as the one showing in the Device Manager you don't need to update the driver. If the number is greater then right-click on the handycam again option, and in the menu drop-down, select "update driver software". Follow the wizard to install the new drivers. IMPORTANT: Make sure that you create a "before" update system restore point all pilots.

  I was using Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium in my Sony VAIO laptop. Recently, I bought PRO 8.1 Windows and installed.

  Now, most of my drivers and utilities VAIO is not compatible! Support for Sony is saying, direct installation Windows 8.1 will be loss the drivers and utilities and we cannot install drivers and utilities more!

  The solution is that I have to install Windows 8 PRO and install and upgrade the sony vaio drivers and utilities. After that, I can do an upgrade to Windows 8.1 PRO.

  So, the question is, I download the installer of Windows 8 PRO but, PRO 8.1 Windows key does not accept!

  What should do? Now, I am running Windows 7. I need to upgrade to windows 8 and 8.1. Please help me solve this problem. All I need is to make my work with Windows 8 key.

  I wish to inform you that the product key that is used for Windows 8.1 cannot be used for Windows 8.

  If you upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8, you will need the key to upgrade of Windows 8. The retail version of Windows 8.1 product key cannot be used to activate Windows 8.

  However, the majority of drivers and utilities that are compatible with Windows 8 works correctly with Windows 8.1.

  I have a Sony HandyCam DCR-TRV280, a Toshiba L505D-S5963 running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 - bit.  My PC does not recognize the camera.  I loaded all drivers and updates to date mentioned above, but when you say to "go into the Device Manager and find the entry for the firewire (IEEE1394) change the driver for the IEEE1394 driver LEGACY and now your camcorder will be able to speak correctly on your PC.", my device driver does not list an IEEE 1394 device.   However, I tried to load the copy and save the 1394bus.sys to C:\Windows\system32\drivers file, but it will not accept a .inf, .sys not file.  I really appreciate all the information below, but would appreciate a little more help.   Thank you

  In addition, it seems that the Sony DCR-TRV280 may require an IEEE 1394 connection to transfer the video from the camcorder to the computer. You can also check with the manufacturer of the device to check if the Sony DCR-TRV280 supports the transfer of DV via USB or USB streaming.

  Hello. If you experience a problem where the camcorder is not able to access the HARD disk, it would mean that there is an underlying problem with the HARD drive. Try to run MEDIA FORMAT, but take note that this will delete all files. If it does not solve the problem, RESET the camcorder (press the tiny reset button located in the lower part of the Panel where the LCD is going). If it still does not work, unit may require service. BTW, 6 months would mean that your still in warranty for the parts, but not for work. I hope this helps.
