  First thing I would do is to take this computer to the place/person fixing it and demand that they fix it properly.

  You should have a sticker with the product key on your computer, on the bottom, or under the battery cover.  I try to type this key in and see if it accepts it.  If this isn't the case, you might not have an authentic version of Windows installed.

It became too slow to use over the years, so I deleted the operating system, which re-formatted disk and tried to reinstall XP using 3 separate disks in Win XP (legitimate) I.   What type of drive you are using to install XP?

  You can use the recovery disk that came with the PC (or created from the original installation), or OEM System Builder drive with the key on the case. Disk and the key must also be to the same edition of XP (Home or Pro)
