Windows 10 - do I REALLY need?

I am running Windows 7 on Acer laptop. I don't do much other than email, facebook, Neopets (Yes, I play Neopets! sue me), shopping online, itunes and putzing General.  While it's free to download... can I REALLY it?  I'm sure I'll get some of the contradictory answers (that I receive by word of mouth), but I just in the way in which the tide. I see no benefit of a new system for my use.  Keep in mind - I'm old) 1 2) don't have anybody to help me learn the new scream 3) easy system.
Thanks Kat

    Norton internet security becomes awkward

    Peter

    Hello

Yes you still need an antivirus program and you are right that Norton tends to cause problems.

    Norton Removal Tool
    http://Service1.Symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

You want to remove Norton and old and even uninstalled antivirus can leave remnants then download and run
the Norton Removal Tool. Also, I would get Avast and Prevx and you should be in good shape.

Download the 3 to get back to after removing the McAfee antivirus.

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AS ADMIN - REBOOT after each.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Here is what I use:

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with everything I threw at them.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except away from Standard, Web and network is working.

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

    Windows Defender

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(Sometimes you have to temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom right of IE)

Avast - stop home - free - all shields you do no need except leave Standard, Web and network running.
(Double-click the blue icon - details look OK. - upper left Shields - those that you do not cancel).
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Prevx - Home - small, fast, exceptional CLOUD free protection, working with other security programs. It comes

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever suspect malware, and that would be unusual with
Avast and Prevx running except a low occasional (not much), updated cookie and then run it as
a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

  • Windows defender do I really need?

I used Avast free anti virus and superantispyware free version. Suddenly I wonder to run Windows Defender. Do I need to do? When I try to update that prompted I am denied access and referred to the "system administrator".  I am the primary user of this computer at home. I don't know how to get around this problem of system administrator. Above all, I wonder if with Avast updated security do I really need this Windows Defender?  What do you recommend?

    Hello

I prefer to use WIndows Defender and Avast (Prevx - free). You have not really
told in detail what exactly is the problem.

SuperAntiSpyware can be extremely invasive, so I put it's a scanner only on request.

To configure SuperAntiSpyware as a scanner to the application if you want:

You need to check all the entries - entries are by SuperAdBlocker which is used by
    SuperAntiSpyware.

Autoruns - free - see what programs are configured so that it starts automatically when your system
boots and you login. Autoruns shows you the full list of registry and file locations where
    applications can configure Auto-start settings.
    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Virtue of the present article in AutoRuns:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

    SASDIFSV SASDIFSV. SYS SUPERAdBlocker.com and SUPERAntiSpyware.com c:\program files\superantispyware\sasdifsv.sys

    SASENUM SASENUM. SYS SUPERAdBlocker.com and SUPERAntiSpyware.com-c:\program files\superantispyware\sasenum.sys

    SASKUTIL SASKUTIL. SYS SUPERAdBlocker.com and SUPERAntiSpyware.com c:\program files\superantispyware\saskutil.sys

There may be others as my memory is not clear - there are 4 and probably 5 entries and they
be quite so don't look close for SuperAntiSpyware ratings and SuperAdBlocker.

Here's what I use and recommend: (these are all free and very effective versions.)

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with all I have
launched on them. Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven to be very
reliable and compatible. Use MSE or Avast and Prevx, Prevx 3 but not all.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except leaving Standard, Web, and

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

(It may temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom
    right of IE)

Two versions of Avast are available 6.x and 4.8 x

Avast - home - free - 6.x stop shields you do not use (except files, Web, network, &)
Shields of behavior) - double click on the icon in the Notification area - real time Orange - click on the
Shield that you want to stop - STOP. To stop the Orange icon to show an error indicator-
Click on the Orange icon - top right - settings - click on the status bar - uncheck shields you
    disabled - click OK

Avast 4.8 x - home - free - stop shields, you don't need except leaving Standard, Web,.
and the network running. (Double-click the blue icon - look OK. - upper left - Shields details
    Finish those you don't use).
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#TAB4

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - home - free small, fast, exceptional protection CLOUD, working with other security
programs. It is a single scanner, VERY EFFICIENT, if it finds something come back here

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

If you update the drivers manually, then it's a good idea to disable the facilities of driver under Windows

You can extend the activation period of 30 days by running slmgr /rearm since the Admin command prompt.

Then take a picture of your COA sticker with your phone, blow as large as possible to try to detect all the characters input for Activation.  You can also use a magnifying glass.

If you can not use the key to product then you will need to either the order of the restoration of the factory of the manufacturer of your PC media, or if you have a C:\windows.old folder you can try to reinstall the factory to SLP activation file.  However we do not support this so you will need to search on your own.

ReadyBoost can help, more RAM, and ReadyBoost is even better and RAM is pretty cheap these days.

The max supported in Vista readyboost drive is 4 GB - if you get a read more than 4 gig, you can
    use the rest for storage.

You need a very quick drive and bring a lot of attention to the demands of the manufacturers that they are ready for ReadyBoost
as even some slow readers claim that.

  • Do I really need these updates before installing SP2?

I've had this laptop in December 2009. It came with Vista Home Premium SP1 on it. I have installed all the updates since I got except the three following:
Compatibility of Microsoft Office Service Pack 2 SP2 35.5 MB
Office Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB949810) 712KB
Power Point Viewer 2007 Service Pack 2 SP2 34.2 MB
I have already installed the update SP1 for MS Office Compatibility and Power Point Viewer, and this laptop has even no MS Office on this subject. I know that the SP2 for Vista is available, and if I hide 3 updates listed above, the SP2 update displays in the available updates window, so I know system is prepared to consider, but it will not be displayed until these "major updates" are shown but not installed. I intend to download the SP2 stand alone package and installing it from a clean boot, but do I really need to install updates three listed above?

Can someone tell me please how to fix programs icon who turned into VLC player? I really need your help guys as soon as possible...

From what you have stated above, I think that the file association for LNK files has been given misdirection to the VLC Player. I've seen this happen when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After selecting the VLC Player (or another program) via the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file (circled in red below), the document or program referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in VLC Player as it should.

The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the browser will want to be opened by VLC Player and VLC Player icon to view the shortcut no matter what shortcut was originally intentioned to open. This is known as a file association and the default icon. The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions 'Open with' on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely for the items on the desktop.

The good news is that a small free utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is also a registry hack to achieve, but I recommend the utility unAssoc for its ease of use. I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on own OneDrive here.

Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new default.

  • Creating recovery discs - HP Pavilion 17 - I am a novice at this and really need support

I downloaded information and directions to do this procedure on the HP site.  I have a few questions to clarify some of my concerns.

1 using the dvd - recordable dvd is the same as you would use to burn videos or other?

    2. I learned later that this procedure should be done just after I bought the computer.  The only information I have on my PC are my emails.  I have not bought any software. Just got the things installed at the factory.  My question about this is in the article that says it will save all the software, but you can save the software to a system image using windows 8 to create a system image. I have instructions to do but ned opions on the question of whether I should just do to only my e-mail of files) or do it for the drivers, windows, programs, system settings files:.  It also shows the following which is very confusing to me that the HP recovery restores the image of the software in its original state.  Any software that is installed later is deleted when you perform a recovery of HP.  Does that mean if I do the first HP recoveering I lose my emails as well as bar favorites that I created to facilitate the connection to important websites without having to type in the address.  It was created for me and is installed with the screen of my provider verizon internet.

    3. I have an ALERT noting this update of windows 8 crashes 12% 13% 14% or 15%.  This alert has appeared on the results of product warranty HP detection/HP site and also another site that I don't remember.  What does that mean?  I don't know if I'm supposed to do something.

I really need your help and your advice on how I should proceed on the above problems.

I have instructions to do this, but need advice on if I should make every effort to only my (e-mail) files or do it for cover discs, windows, Control Panel, programs and files?  He

Thank you very much for your quick response.  I have a few questions/comments to check that I understand your answers.

1 DVD - I understand that I must use the best discs that will work in my DVD, such as Verbatim, Sony, etc.

In addition to this is there any other preferences for the current DVD and for use on a 64-bit process that I have on my laptop, speed, other important characteristics? No, just get the DVD + R discs or good quality r. Sony usually works well for me.

    2. I unerstand that the actual creation of the recovery disc will affect in any way my software added and created documents such as e-mails and the bookmarks bar, etc., that it concerns only the factory installed components... Fix. Using disks to restore/reinstall on the laptop says back to out of box state. With this procedure, many people use a regular backup of the files to get back on the machine after a factory Recovery. An external USB hard drive is very nice for this, but backups can also be done on DVD.

    3. create a system image - am I right in assuming that this process does not duplicate topics in the created recover disks?  Also, when you add details such as software, the documents, etc. to your computer requires another creation of system images. She does double duty with elements of recovery such as Windows, drivers & software - but also an exact copy of the hard drive with your added files, newly installed programs, photos, etc. All of your personal files + recovery disc files are in an Image. In front of the effect of the restore with recovery disks - this process restores laptop with original Windows, software & drivers so that your files added. And Yes - additional Images would be required to maintain an up-to-date image.

4 USB Flash drive - I have no idea what it is but I have instructions for the use of this procedure for creating recovery image on using flash player and it's faster than a DVD.  Is the ddrive USB flash something that I have to buy, it's expensive and my PC has the ability to use this process? Your laptop has Betacam do recovery on USB - but in reality this process gives owners more trouble than DVDs. Several times resulting in the purchase of several flash drives before finding one that works. My advice-stck with DVD.

    Thanks for your help.
