  Could someone help please, for the last few weeks where are updates of Windows security and I think that all is well I keep getting messages flashing up to say that updates could not be completed.   If you have a firewall (firewall of Windows example) make sure that Windows update is on the white list. You can also try disabling the firewall and retry the Windows Update to see if that helps.  If it do not forget to reactivate it later.

  Sorry, this is not Microsoft.  This is a public forum from user to user hosted by Microsoft on its servers for the comfort of its clients, and we all here are volunteers.

  You say you use XP.  What is your question?  What do you mean 'conflicts with Vista?

  I suggest recovery discs you order from HP for your computer.  If HP is no longer the issue of stocks you can order such a third of Recovery - Disks.com.  There are several of these companies.  If you are going to use XP, you need to install XP from scratch and this means that you need XP drivers for your brand and model.  If HP has no XP drivers on your computer you must not try to use XP on it.

  Remember that Vista Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate out of Microsoft support on 10 April and there will be more updates, including critical security patches after that date.  Only Vista business and company will continue to receive updates.  You might consider this a good time to upgrade to Windows 7.  You must download and run the Windows Update Advisor once you restored Vista successfully.

  To clarify, I need to know if you're referring to the charms on the far right of the screen, or the dialogue options found when you right-click on the desktop? If it's one or the other, make sure that you are logged as the administrator of the account to avoid the restrictions of the system.

  If Vista is preinstalled on your laptop, this product key is NOT for Windows 7.

  There is a free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 years, but that offer expired for a long time.

  How does the Windows 7 upgrade Option?

  The Windows 7 upgrade Option is available through participating PC manufacturers on some PC and Microsoft on any purchase of packaged product Windows Vista. The Windows 7 upgrade Option applies to Windows Vista Home Premium, Business and Ultimate editions. Your Windows 7 update will be the comparable version: so you will get either Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional (upgrade to Windows Vista Business) or Windows 7 Ultimate, respectively.   I work for a non for profit charity and have the task to maintain the PCs and laptops that we use. I have a Compaq laptop that is used for the staff to write notes client and other related tasks. It is a hard ram and 500gigb of 1gigb drive. This is a Vista machine, but for some unknown reason it is Windows XP. I don't know who, when, or why this has been done, but I'd love to reverse this situation. Unfortunately I don't have a compatible disc to install Vista on the laptop. I have only a Windows 7 disc that came with another machine, our company has bought so I can't use it. The system restore dates back to February 2015, so it's no good for me either. Are we doomed to keep XP that support both or is there a difficulty easy or inexpensive to do this as I very limited it funds to buy software.

  Sorry, but that's just one buy volunteers self-help personal forum and we cannot do anything about the problem of activation of here.

  As I see it, you have two options (1) of the store and the Support of HP (2).

  About the store, they SHOULD have returned the laptop you fully functional.  So if it was MY PC, I would go assault store and REQUEST that they we're right.  You've taken or sent to them to be fixed, not to give cost you a virgin machine!

  Regarding technical Support HP, as this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly so they put you in contact with HP Tech Support to see what they can do on the diagnosis and repair of your machine remotely.
  
  I did recently, and HP technology was able to remotely access my PC on the Internet and to make the necessary repairs.

  There are two options available.

  1. you can order a set of replacement recovery disks using the link below - it will reinstall the operating system, all the drivers, and almost all of the original software (the exception being often tests of MS Office).  They will also recreate all of the original scores, including the recovery Partition.

  Order HP recovery disks.

  2 another option that you might consider is to create your own Windows 7 installation disc.

  Before you try the following, make sure that you can always read the character product activation key 25 on your label Windows COA (5 blocks of 5 alphanumeric games).

  An example of a COA label can be seen here.

  You can create a Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the good Disk Image ( this must be the same version that originally came with your laptop - it is listed as Windows 7 Home Premium 64 - bit ) from the link below and use an app like ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly on a blank DVD - a guide on the use of ImgBurn to write an ISO on a disc is here.  These Images are clean and a very respected source (Digital River).
