Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is a MBR partition table. The EFI system, Windows cannot be installed on GPT disks

Server 8 installation error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is a MBR partition table. The EFI system, Windows cannot be installed to GPT disks.

How do I resolve this problem and install windows 8 as usual? I have several partitions with data... I don't want to delete all partitions and create partitions from scratch and install the os...

How to get there?

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is a MBR partition table. The EFI system, Windows cannot be installed to GPT disks.

This could happen not only windows 8, but also windows 7, windows Server 2008, or 8 server 2008 R2... Troubleshooting steps will be similar for all windows to get this problem...

I had this problem when installing server 2008 r2 on a dell... T110 server without remove the other partitions or lose all the data on the other drivers, you can solve this problem...

simply, I have followed these steps using gparted and solved my problem... These measures will be useful for anyone with similar problem... . All the steps that I've documented here... All the steps I've documented here...

  • Cannot create Windows 8.1 System Image - fails with backup of the EFI

I have problems trying to create an Image of my Surface Pro system.

The program seems to work but then sends a message:

    The backup failed.

It has been a failure in the preparation of the backup image of any of the volumes in the backup set. (0x807800C5)

    Additional information:

The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. (0 x 80070021)

The volume on which it backup fails is the first volume - the EFI system partition.

The backup is set to save on my Dlink NAS, that works very well for my history file backups.

I thought that somehow my anti-virus software may be to blame, but I'm not under any third-party anti-virus software.

I also thought that if I started mode safe mode with networking that could avoid the problem, but the backup is not allowed to run in Mode without failure.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Thank you

    Alan

P.S. I think that I misunderstood the problem: If again, trying to backup, but instead using my SIN I plug a drive in the USB, then my backup work normally (and I can then copy / move the backup on the NAS server).  Looks like this might be a D-link problem maybe: D-link box is a DNS-320 ShareCenter.

P.P.S.  Although the DNS-320 was purchased from a major last week retailer, the firmware was version 1.0 and 2 years.  Updated to v 1.01 seems to have solved the problem: at least for a PC.

    Hi Alan,

As you said that the problem does not occur when you use a USB drive, the problem might be related to
    connection problems with NAS.

I suggest you send the request in the Technet forum. Technical expertise to solve these problems is available in this forum.

  • Windows 8.1 using already updated EFI System Partition

    Hi all

I am about to install Windows 8.1 on my machine. The thing is, I already have Arch linux installed in UEFI mode (discs are focused on the TPG etc.). My setup is as follows:

-SSH drive with ESP (EFI System Partition) + the Linux partition

-2 discs of data, not important now

-1 500 GB HARD drive formatted in NTFS for Windows.

I want to achieve is to have Windows Installer on 500GB HDD, but use 8.1 pre-existing ESP partition on SSD drive rather than create a new one.

    How would I do that?

    Hello

Thanks for the quick response. Fortunately, last night found an answer to my question. To illustrate the question I had and the answer I found, I will dwelve on the topic a bit.

First of all, I was about to install Windows 8.1 on workstation with Arch Linux already installed and hoped to learn before making the actual plant, while I wouldn't fix the mistakes I would have done. My configuration is:

    1. 64 GB SSD drive GPT formatted with two partitions: 512MB, FAT32 formatted the EFI System Partition. This partition serves as my partition/boot, containing the code of EFI GRUB and Linux kernel + iniramfs and of 60 GB + Linux ext4 partition.
    2. 500 GB drive HARD, drive GPT formatted, empty, I was about to install Windows on.

Now, I learned that Windows 8.1 creates two partitions on a disk: Partition EFI system for its bootstrapper code + other things and another partition. My goal was to convince Windows to use the ESP partition on disk (1) rather than creating its own, so all codes start, regardless of the operating system resides on the same partition for: 1 win some acceleration (that's the SSD drive) and 2. Facilitate the configuration of the boot loader GRUB or Windows for dual-boot.

I found no option to identify the ESP for Windows partition to use, that's why I posted my question.

Nevertheless, I proceeded to the installation. Windows has detected all readers, figured out that there is already an ESP partition in the system, but not on the disk, he was about to be installed and has not created any other ESP partition on the HARD disk.

Now, I have exactly the setup I needed: 8.1 for Windows installed on the HARD disk drive, but he left all the startup code on the partition on the SSD drive. I have configured the GRUB to call code .efi Windows

It turns out Windows did the right thing automatically without the need for extra configuration, and my question is a bit premature.

Thanks again for your quick response and have a beautiful day!

  • I have replaced my hd, reinstalled the operating system, but you forgot to activate vista. How can I solve the problem?

After that my hd, I decided to replace it as well as reinstall Vista Home Basic using the system recovery disk, that I bought at HP in 2007. My laptop is a pavilion dv6000 with Vista 32 bit.

Unfortunately I didn't, I had to turn my copy of vista on my pc within 30 days, since I got my pc sometimes without incurring in this issue. I tried to insert the cd in the back of my pc key, but to understand that no longer works, so I tried with the new cd key of my drive to restore but that no longer works.

  • Boot Camp Windows Installation 10 - "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. It's the GPT partition style.

    Hello

I tried to dual boot Windows 10 alongside OS X El Capitan on my iMac 21.5 inch i5 end 2013. I have followed all the instructions in the Boot Camp assistant, restart, choose the yellow 'Windows' drive to boot from, but when I get to the Windows installation, enter the product key and language, and then select the partition (0-4, the partition Disk Partition) it tells me that "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is the GPT partition style. »

So I found this answer: How do I install Windows 8.1 on Haswell MBP

But then I received the same error.

    Tried this: http://macriot.com/mcrt/?p=2362

But fdisk TPG allow me to change anything, as the SIP is enabled.

Tried to disable SIP via a command line in a terminal in recovery mode, but got an error-bash: command not found csrutil.

So now I'm stuck on all fronts. Any ideas?

    Thank you

    RedPanda

    1. your iMac end 2013 supports the facilities of BIOS/MBR and GPT/EFI.

    2. the legacy BIOS/MBR method requires a hybrid MBR.

3 EFI/GPT is recommended for your specific model.

    4. you can use the GPT Fdisk steps in your link to make your drive a GPT disk only. It is not enough.

    5. you will need to convert the FAT32 partition space using the following OS X Terminal

    diskutil eraseVolume free disk0s4 FREE

This will return an error, because free space is not associated with disk slices.

    6. at this point, use the USB installer created by the wizard of BC, boot from it and hold down the Alt/Option key and select Boot EFI (not Windows). Point to the portion of the free space that you see after the + 620 MB Recovery HD. It will separate into a small (128 MB) MSR and the rest as MSD (NTFS).

    7. do not install W7 in Boot EFI, because it has some difficulties.

    8. when Windows is installed, and BC drivers are not installed, run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder.

    9. If csrutil is not found, you are in the recovery of the Internet, because your local Recovery HD is corrupted. The rescue of the failure of the local recovery is restoration of Internet. Your must be on El Capitan. There is no csrutil (or SIP) before El Capitan.

  • "windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is the GPT partition style. »

I want to convert Windows 8 for windows 7, but it pops up like this: ""windows cannot be installed to this disk. " The selected disk is the GPT partition style. »

so, I format the OS partition but it always seems the same problem. ? What should I do, I can't delete or format the data partition because it just my backup data.

It is a problem with the way that you start from Installation

    Reboot and press F12
You should see 2 similar startup options on the installation disc you started with
Try both of them, one of them will work
This fixed it for me when I faced this problem
If this does not work for you, check the BIOS settings

  • partition 'Windows cannot delete the active system partition on this disk.

I created a partition of HARD drive in order to install a system in multiboot using XP and Vista, but I did mess up the BONES of the two. Now I want to do a clean install of Vista ONLY, but I don't know how to get rid of the partition! * Example: Computer management > disk management > right-click on the volume (M) > Delete Volume * but I get an error: "Windows cannot delete the active system partition on this disk" can someone help me to get my Vista to original?

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

Delete the existing Partitions during the process.

  • My xp upgrade window window error 7 "Windows cannot be installed to this disk pahrd space.

Original title: update my Windows xp to Windows 7.

Edit: Switched from Windows XP to Windows 7.

Hi, I'm installing ion window 7 my laptop which is a window XP, when I install on a partition, it says: Windows cannot be installed to this disk pahrd space. Windows must be installed on a partition formatted in NTFS. What does that mean?

    Hi Steven,

    Thanks for the details.

The error message indicates that you need convert a Partition to the NTFS file system. Because Windows XP supports two disk file systems: the table of allocation of file (FAT) file system and the file system NTFS and Windows 7 supports NTFS only if you need to convert the partition to NTFS first to start the installation.

You can take the help of the article next to use Convert.exe to convert a Partition to the NTFS file system, and then try to upgrade or install Windows 7.
