  • Windows Update 646 on KB977304 error code

I downloaded and installed 8 of 9 updates successfully in my computer (which has Windows Vista Home Basic Edition), but the major update of security for Microsoft Works 8 (KB977304) failed, and I got error Code 646, followed of a message "Windows Update has encountered an unknown error.  I tried to download and install the update several times, without success.  Finally, I stopped trying to install the update, as I thought Microsoft would soon find a solution to the problem, and I would be able to install the update at a later date.

Out of curiosity, I opened Microsoft Works word processor and clicked on "about Microsoft Works" under the help tab, to see which version of
Microsoft Works was preinstalled on my computer.  I discovered that the Microsoft Works program in my computer is really version 8.5, not version 8 which is shown on the security update!  The difference in the version numbers of the update for Microsoft Works and Microsoft Works program in my computer perhaps the reason why I got the error Code 646, message "Windows Update has encountered an unknown error"?  Janice M. Because registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing, update facilities have failed. REGSVR32 WUWEBV. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 MSXML3. DLL/S

  • code error 646 Windows update

    I install 14 update of windows, but he met the error 646 code (KB978382) (KB973709) (KB969604) (KB57789) (KB969559) (KB969613) (KB972581) (KB974234) (KB976321) (KB978380) (KB976416) (KB980729) (KB974561) (KB981715) .i already try to disable my norton firewall but it does not work.i hope you can help me with this.thank you.

For 646 error code, there are a few things that seem to work for most everyone.  The first thing to try is to disable UAC, and then run Windows Update.  The second is to download the updates and install them manually.

Turn the revenge of the UAC

To install updates manually, go to Downloads from Microsoft and search the KB # which is a failure.  Download on your PC, then run it from there.

  • Error 646 when installing Windows updates

Whenever I try to install the following updates to the window, I get the error 646 answer:

    KB981715 KB980729 KB978382 KB978380

I use Vista and Internet Explorer

Sorry, you have problems getting your patches installed. I have a number of things for you to look at.  First of all, are your Windows Update and the Background Intelligent Transer Services set to Automaticand started . You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run.  You must accept the contract agreement, and then click continue.
    (4) repeat this process for each download of updates Windows could not install.
    (5) to rerun the update from Microsoft, click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or erase viruses can prevent the installation of patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

    Hope this helps,

  • Error - 646, while trying to install KB977304.

Any attempt KB977304 installation. Install fails error 646, been round on Help FAQ sites and this is the second time that I have followed the links on this forum. Tried deleting download malicious malware it freezes also. Don't know what a manual download, but followed this link too and entered in the update #.  It will start and get to a point and everything freezes. This is also linked to an Itunes installation failure. I did all of their suggestions, until checking my windows settings, which is what brings me here. Thought it might be something to that day. BTW KB977304 was not install for a while now.

    Ideas:

    • You have problems with programs
    • Error messages
    • Recent changes to your computer
    • What you have already tried to solve the problem

But now, to start the installation, I get the error message 'No Win32 Application valid'

    1. see if you can download/run the MSRT tool manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not analysis FAST!  You may need to download the MSRT on an uninfected machine and then transfer the MRT. EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN. EXE before running it.

    Hi Rocketron,

Sometimes patches seem to just have a hard time to proceed with the installation.  I have a fw for to look you at other things.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).

  • c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll - update error 646

I continue to wear on one of my two machines updates failed code 646 for the Office updates. I have questions about c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll versions (and other related files apparently). I have Windows Update set to check and let me decide. I have maintained security using workaround to manually
    Download.

On my desk for c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll, the version is 7.3.7600.16385. This machine is a Dell Inspiron (put into operation in July 2009) with Windows 7 HP 32 (update Vista HP 32 recently), Intel and Office Professional 2003. Properties show that the file has been
created, modified and accessed July 17, 2009. This machine has never had any failure of an update.

On the laptop (Compaq V6508AU) HP version c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll is 7.4.7600.226 - Vista HP 32 (put into operation in September 2007), AMD and Office Professional 2003.  Created and consulted on October 4, 2009, amended August 7, 2009. This machine
a constant codes 646 failure for the Office updates in October, November and December, i.e. after creation and consulted on date.

Is the version on the laptop of the cause of the update error 646? Why the desktop version are previous to the laptop?

I'm just guessing that this problem could be linked to the MSOcache or a related Office registry error only.

Maybe the uninstallation and reinstallation of Office isn't enough (sometimes it was not in the past).

You mention WSUS that is not Windows Update Agent. WSUS is completely different from system update.

Maybe to a certain stage why some have the problem with 646 with office and others are not clearly will some time in the future. At the moment we have only the work around, which is annoying but works.
