Windows Explorer is adjustable to open to a specific folder in Vista?

Hello

Windows Explorer opens to my user folder in the C drive.

I prefer to use the folder of the user above, immediately under the "Desktop" - can I force Explorer to open to a specific folder, IE my above user folder?

I'm on Vista 32-bit, SP2

TIA

Tim

Hi Tim,.

To accomplish this task, you must change the Windows Explorer target area

(a) click Start | All programs | Accessories.

(b) right click Windows Explorer, and then click Properties.

(c) change the path in the field target to point to the desired Windows Explorer folder to open.

(d) click OK.

(e) the key box is the target area. To change the shortcut to Windows Explorer to open a specific folder of your choice, enter the target as follows:

c:\windows\EXPLORER. EXE/n, / e, X:\Folder of your choice

This will show a folder and all subfolders under him.

Otherwise, you can try this out for a slightly different look:

c:\windows\EXPLORER. EXE/n, / e, / select u:\Folder of your choice

This will show the folder and all its subfolders is collapsed.

    Hi kathyd,.

    ·        You did changes to the computer before this problem started?

Since we do not know what is causing this problem, I'd suggest unanimous the event viewer on your computer and check the details in the window logs messages/error codes important related to the question, during the time where this problem occurs and after return.

Event logs can help you identify and diagnose the source of current system problems or help you predict potential system problems.

Access the link below to learn how to view and manage the event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

You can try to start both computers in safe mode and check if it can open the folder where the MPEG 2 files are stored and if windows Explorer crashes. To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping key F8 during restart. Once you see the option to start in safe mode select and press to enter.

  • Windows Explorer crashes when you open folders that contain pictures.

From this point, I'm exasperated!  Whenever I try to open a folder containing images, windows Explorer crashes.

I did a thorough check of the spyware.  I jumped through hoops attempting to clean the cache thumb and no joy.

When it first started happening, I thought it was too many files in a folder.  That does not seem to resolve things for a while, but the problem is back.

There may be too much data in the folder or the display on the screen.  You have pictures instead of icons in these records?  Go to start / Control Panel / folder Options / view and check the box for display icons instead of thumbnails.  See if that solves the problem.

If this isn't the case, create a single image and save the file.  Create a folder in Windows Explorer and save the file to this folder.  Try to open this file.  You have the same problem or does it work?  If this works, there may be something true in what you said about the size of the files.  If she has the same problem, then you must do some serious troubleshooting to try to find the cause and fix.

I hope this helps. Keep me informed.

    Good luck!

  • Cannot delete a Word in Windows Explorer file, said his opening in MS Word

I have a regular file to MS Word (Word 2003) that I can't delete or move when I'm in Windows Explorer.  Whenever I try to move or delete the file, I get an error message saying: the file cannot be moved or deleted because it is open in MS Word.  However, MS Word is NOT open, nor is the file open in MS Word.

How can I delete this file?

P.S. The author of the file is known to me and other files from this author (or ANY other Word, Excel, pdf, files etc.) can all be deleted or moved - no problem

    Hi Holger-TLS,

If you close the program, but the file is not yet clear, restart your computer. You can view all programs currently running on your computer in the Task Manager.

    Try this:
    1. press Ctrl + Alt + Del
    2. Select the Task Manager
    3. check if word.exe runs in the process
    4. If it is running, end it.

  • Windows Explorer crashes when you open Control Panel

After starting my PC of operation Win 7 Pro (64 bit) every time I try to open the control panel for the first time, Windows Explorer stops responding forcing me to restart Windows Explorer. Once Windows Explorer restarts then Control Panel opens normally after that no matter how many times I open the Panel. Any ideas how to fix?

Often, a certain instability in Windows Explorer is due to the defective shell extensions and addons.
Consider using Sysinternals Autoruns or ShellExView. Disable Add-ons and non Microsoft shell extensions and verify the behavior.  If he went, reactivate the disabled extensions/add-ons, one at a time and see if you can identify who may be liable.
Try a clean boot, or boot into safe mode.  The behavior persists?

  • Windows 7, ask permission to open each & every file/folder

    Hello everyone!

Question: I'm using windows 7 (64-bit), whenever I try to open any file/folder "You are not allowed to open this file/folder" appears. Is it possible to disable these permissions? (Read the explanation below to properly understand my question)

    Explanation:
Problem started a few years back. I did a guest account. Guest account was not allowed to access my "D" drive (read or write). After a while there was a problem and I could not log into the admin account I looked here and there but could not find any solution, so the ultimate solution was re-installing windows. After installing windows, when I open windows Explorer, I was very surprised to see that I don't have permission to drive D (as it has been limited by previous windows admin).
    I followed after path D > properties > Security > continue > edit > add account Admin
I saw a s-1-5-21-456384692-283491759-102987398-1000bin, had a full training & admin (after re-installing windows) did not have access to the drive. I tried to delete this garbage, but it could not be so I've added my account and gives full access to the drive.
    Now, the story begins...
When I gave full access to the admin, it's basically access to enter the D drive only. Inside the D drive no file/folder is available. Now to open any folder I have to repeat this path folder > properties > Security > continue > Edit > add account Admin but does not end, to re-open all the files inside this folder file >Properties > Security > continue > edit > add account Admin.

This problem is really disturbing. There are 20 GB of data in the D drive and I can't repeat this process for each file/folder
    I followed after path D > properties > Security > continue > edit > add account Admin
    I saw a bin s-1-5-21-456384692-283491759-102987398-1000,
-> Is not garbage, but the string to identify an account you deleted at some point. Given that the account doesn't exist anymore, you can remove this reference. You must first enter with the problem file.
Follow these steps to solve your problem in one fell swoop:
1 log in under an administrator account.
    2. click on the start planet.
    3. type cmd.exe in the search box.
    4. press on Ctrl + Shift + Enter
    5. click on "run as Administrator".
    6. type the following commands and press ENTER after each:
    takeown /f D:\/a r d y
    cacls D:\/t/c /G administrators: F System: F everyone: F
(Answer "Yes" when prompted "Are you sure?")
In order to familiarize yourself with the process of setting permissions through Windows Explorer, I highly recommend that you study this guide: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx

  • Windows Explorer - right column to automatically display the left folder?

Simple question for Windows Explorer: is it possible for Win7 64 bit to display in the column on the right immediately which is highlighted in the left column?  (Like most of the any Manager files on the planet!)  I guess they try to minimize the work that the program does stuff that shows only the user didn't need.  When the user arrives at its destination they press enter or space to display the content.  I understand your point and minimize the workload for the program.  Stupid of course in real life, is not an option.  As usual, Microsoft, like most software companies think people want to think for them.  Not the case.  Unless of course I missed the 'show content immediately' option somewhere.  Its got to a point where you cannot assume a sense of almost any software company.  They all try to think for you, you Lasso in their way of doing things.  Guess it helps in the Department of bugs, but makes for very unhappy and frustrated users.  Or if you are a fool, do you think that the system is perfect, because it assumes that all your decisions for you.  Society is reflected in many ways in the design of software.  Doesn't look like good people.  People seem to become lazier and lazier or they become busier and busier and can not do even the simplest decisions.

He agreed with the request of the customer.  Visitors don't like the record, in that they were to change until they had highlighted that they really wanted to enter.  It was particularly embarrassing when put customers highlight a network location that takes several minutes to connect or charge (heaven help you if this was a corporate backup tape location).    It was also a common complaint that it was incompatible (derivative of something is not supposed to cause an action occurs in a part any system: only by clicking or by selecting with button enter should).

Changes based on direct feedback from customers on Windows 7, this is what makes Windows 7 "designed by the people."  If you don't like the decisions, please provide your feedback so that your thoughts can be heard in the development of future versions.

Read it in conjunction with the rest of the information they give link above.

    Note

If SFC could not fix something, then run the new command to see if it can be able to next time. Sometimes, it can take by running the sfc/scannow command 3 times restart the PC after each time completely fix everything what he is capable of.

If not, then run the Dism/online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command to repair damage to the component store,

    Repair-WindowsImage-online - CheckHealth

    Repair-WindowsImage-online - ScanHealth

    Repair-WindowsImage-online - RestoreHealth

Restart the PC afterwards, and then retry the command sfc/scannow .

If still no, then try using ONE OPTION above to run the command sfc/scannow at the start

If still no, then you could do a Refresh of Windows 8, or run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the wrong file occurred to fix. You may need to repeat doing a restore of the system until you find a restore point that is older that may work.

If not yet, then you can use the steps in the TIP box in the section THREE OPTION to manually replace the files SFC could not fix.

    • The PC starts in Windows RE (Recovery Eenvironment).
    • Windows RE scans the hard drive for your data, settings, and applications and puts them aside (on the same drive).
    • Windows RE installs a new copy of Windows.
    • Windows RE restores the data, settings, and applications, which it set aside in the newly installed copy of Windows.

My system worked very well and all of a sudden this is happening has begun. I left my PC overnight and just rebooted for the first time, and I'm having the same problem: programs seem to work (I'm writing this in Firefox), but as soon as I want to look at any particular folder on my system, Explorer crashes.

It's just the same thing when I tried to install a current Windows Update, when I tried to install a registry cleaner, and even when I tried to empty my trash!

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

EDIT: after further analysis that I discovered that Vista logon failure mode seems to get rid of this problem. Is it possible to refine the potential causes of this problem?

    Best,

That the file was present, and that AV scanners 12/42 to the VT file detected file as malicious or suspicious, suggests your system has active malware on this subject.

The best thing to do is to get rid of the malware first and then go ahead and restore items disabled with Autoruns.  No need to uninstall Nero, and I would hang on to the renamed.drv in a way, since it is the one piece of evidence suggesting malware. Basically, you can leave it as it is, don't forget not that it is there and then go through some hair removal techniques.  The AV software should find the file renamed.drv and delete / quarantine it.

  • Media players and windows Explorer crash

    Hello

Recently I got this problem where my windows Explorer crashed whenever I opened Control Panel, specifically, whenever I tried to view the system information. I tried a few "solutions" that I saw on the internet nothing has worked so far - this all started about 2 months ago, when I tried to update my graphic drivers.

Then a few days ago I was watching movies with my laptop and I fell asleep while the film was presented, my laptop is not plugged the battery flat overnight. When I woke up and return the laptop computer he would play no matter what video file with any of my media players (Windows Media Player, GOM or VLC) - when I try to open the video file, it simply says that GOM/VLC/WM has stopped working, then closes.

    Important notes:

-I am able to watch movies if I boot in safe mode (there is simply no sound.)

-I can also go in control panel - system of information if I boot in safe mode.

-I am running windows 7 (with the latest updates)

    -J' use a pavilion dv6.

-All music files open with media players, the problem is just video files.

I suspect it's a graphics related question, but I'm not sure. It works as it should when it is in safe mode, but I don't know how to say what is causing the problem.

Many thanks for any help :)

    Hi Mithrandir,

    I found the problem!

I updated the graphics driver and that seemed to do the trick - the players videos play in all media and is not any control panel crash or media players.

The only problem I have now is that after the backlight driver update does not work (although it is a driver issue it seems that many people have had) - I was wondering if you know if it is possible to reinstall the previous driver (not just go back to it, but have in fact all this re installed because I think there's maybe a corrupt file or something like that which was causing the) problem)

So, as I thought it was the graphics driver that caused the outcome...
