  I use 10 64-bit Windows

  It seems that the problem was an add-on called 'Focus Regainer'.

  Click 'Start' > right click on 'My computer' > click 'manage '.
  Click the (+) sign next to Services and Applications > below, click on 'Services '.
  In the right, double-click 'RPC Remote Procedure Call ()'
  Make sure that the startup type is set to "Automatic" and click 'Start', and then click OK
  In the services pane, double-click "print spooler".
  Make sure that the startup type is set to 'Automatic', click 'Start' and click OK as well.

  When I open Windows Media Player 12, if I play music or not, in less than a minute, a box appears that says:

  After days and days of the trial, an online chat with a technician Microsoft (which was useless) I finally found a suggestion that worked... I had to create a new user account with administrative privileges. Media worked perfectly in this new account! I then spent ages downloading the files from my old account before deleting completely.
